27–28 March 2008
Faculty of Philology, University of Belgrade, Serbia
Supported by the British Council Belgrade
2nd Call for Papers (new extended deadline: Feb. 25, 2008)
1st Call for Participation
The English Department at the Faculty of Philology, University of Belgrade, is pleased
to announce the first international meeting of the phoneticians of English. We are delighted to inform you that we have received presentation proposals from more than 15 countries, which will ensure the international character of the conference. As many colleagues have asked for an extended deadline, we have decided to postpone it till February 25 2008.
The aim of the event is to bring together researchers who investigate various aspects of English phonetics and English pronunciation both from the theoretical and pedagogical perspectives. Papers addressing comparative issues between English and another language are most welcome. Each paper will be allotted 30 minutes (20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for discussion).
The conference fee is 50 Euros, and it includes the conference pack and coffee break refreshments. The reduced fee for the Serbian participants is EUR 35. We also invite colleagues to participate in the event without their own presentation. The registration fee for these participants is EUR 35.
The official language of the conference is English. The keynote speakers are Dr. Jane Setter, University of Reading, UK, and Professor Tvrtko Prcic, University of Novi Sad, Serbia. Dr Setter will have a talk on the English L2 prosody research: rhythm and intonation, and Professor Prcic's lecture is entitled "Pronunciation and spelling of proper names from English in Serbian: who's calling the tune?"
A selection of papers will be published after the conference.

Hi there,
I've been doing some transcriptions of classes recently, and one thing that has struck me has
been just how strange teacher language is in terms of the mix of quotes, reading out
passages/instructions etc, and statements such as "We have to use have to when we want to
talk about...", plus interpersonal comments, instructions, talking to yourself etc. Does
anyone know of any research into how teachers use prosody to mark whether something is a
quote, or display, or reference to grammar etc.? and whether students really pick up on this?
Alex.
