Iron Age murder mystery as CT scan shows British man from 100AD was
beaten, strangled, then beheaded in 'pagan ritual'
The Daily Mail [UK], 9 March 2012

Archaeologists have solved a 1900-year-old 'cold case' mystery - using a
medical CT scanner to scan the head of an Iron Age murder victim. The
preserved head of the second century Briton - known as The Worsley Man
due to his location near Salford - was found in a peat bog in 1958. The
scan shows he as bludgeoned over the head, garrotted and then beheaded
[I hate when that happens] - leading archaeologists to suspect he was
sacrificed. [Think there's a chance?] Experts had been divided over how
he died - but the new CT scan shows clear marks of the ligature that
strangled him. The Worsley Man is thought to have lived around 100AD
when Romans occupied much of Britain.

Bulgaria's Plovdiv Moves to Reveal Roman Forum
Novinite [Bulgaria], March 7, 2012

Bulgaria's second largest city of Plovdiv will invest BGN 100 000 into
making the western portion of its Roman forum visible, it has been
revealed. The further excavation of the edifice is expected to kick off
in May. If necessary, the project may receive further financing, Plovdiv
Mayor Ivan Totev has told the Bulgarian National Radio. The Roman forum
dates from the reign of Emperor Vespasian in 1st century and was
finished in the 2nd century. The forum was a focal point of the streets
of the ancient city of Tremontium.

Counting of Looted Antiquities Complete
Greek Reporter [USA], March 6, 2012

Some 9,500 ancient coins, mostly made of bronze, were confiscated by the
police authorities of Chalkidiki after the last case of antiquities
smuggling ring was exposed a few days ago. The archaeologists of the
Ministry of Culture and Tourism have completed the counting of the
findings and have already begun the scientific documentation of the
confiscated ancient artifacts, which have been transported to the
Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki. The majority of the coins comes
from the broader Northern Greece region and dates back from the
Byzantine era to the 5th century BC. Among the coins, several silver
coins have also been found, mostly tetradrachms from the 4th century BC,
cut by the Chalkidian Alliance and Phillipos II. Other small objects
confiscated include bronze votive idols and jewelry, such as necklaces,
rings, clasps and pins, most probably looted through illegal excavations
on graves. Three golden mouthpieces of the 6th century BC stand out
amidst the overall findings of the police research.

Noted that Worsley man (found at Salford) and Lindow man (found near Wilmslow) had very similar backgrounds to their deaths (Druidic influence?) even though they were 100+ years between them. Salford and Wilmslow are both near Manchester, UK and it strikes me that on wild Saturday nights in that city, some modern-day person might suffer the same or similar fate =-O

Interesting but had you mentioned 'Christian' to Nero or Domitian neither would have any idea what you were talking about as it wasn't until around the start of the third century that the sect began to identify with a name.

Roman graves found in Vinkovci
Croatian Times [UK], 16.03.12.

Archaeologists from Vinkovci City Museum (Vukovar-Syrmia County), whilst
carrying out archaeological research work on the building site of
business and residential premises, have found four graves dating back to
the Roman period, confirmed the head of archaeological research at the
site, Hrvoje Vulic. "Out of the four graves, we found two that are
complete, one partially destroyed, while the fourth remained untouched,
and that is the one of most interest to us. It is a child's grave who
was buried, probably a girl under the age of 10 years," said Vulic.

Remains of dark ages princess found in field in Cambridge
The Independent [UK], 16 March 2012

The remains of a mysterious Anglo-Saxon princess, who died thirteen and
a half centuries ago, have been found in a field three miles south of
Cambridge. Aged just 16 when she died, and buried lying on a special
high status funerary bed, she was laid to rest with a small solid gold,
garnet encrusted, Christian cross upon her chest. Her exact identity is
as yet a complete mystery. However, it's likely that she was a member of
one of the newly Christianized Anglo-Saxon royal families of the period.
She was buried fully clothed, her bronze and iron chatelaine (belt hook)
and purse, still attached to her leather belt.

Roman kiln unearthed by builders at Norton Primary School
BBC, 14 March 2012

The remains of a Roman kiln have been discovered by builders working at
a school in North Yorkshire. The discovery was made during construction
of a £1.5m extension at Norton Primary School near Malton. North
Yorkshire County Council said the kiln was the first major find in the
area since the 1940s. The kiln was found along with fragments of
pottery. Archaeologists also uncovered ditches believed to be of a
Romano-British date. A Roman fort existed on the north side of the River

Derwent at Malton and previous work at the school had uncovered Roman,
medieval and post-medieval pottery.

Floods help uncover part of Roman fort complex
North West Evening Mail [UK], 14 March 2012

ANYONE who saw the TV coverage of floods in the Cockermouth area in 2009

would find it hard to image any good could have come from it for
archaeologists. However, the scouring effect of flood water revealed
parts of a roman fort and civilian village which had not been seen for
close to 2,000 years. The remarkable finds were described by Frank
Giecco in a paper on Recent Archaeological Work at Papcastle during the
39th Archaeological Forum held by the Centre for North-West Regional
Studies at Lancaster University.

Ancient theatre of Delos to be restored
Agenzia Nazionale Stampa Associata [Italy], 15 March 2012

The Central Archaeological Council (KAS) of the Greek ministry for
culture and tourism has given green light to the restoration of the
ancient theatre of Delos, one of the most important religious centres of
ancient Greece, an islands of the Cyclades where Apollo, god of light,
was born according to mythology. It is no coincidence that the centre of
the theatre, the orchestra, is considered to be the brightest point in
the Mediterranean in a study of the University of Athens. The ancient
theatre of Delos is one of the few that were completely built in marble.
Its construction started around 314 BC and ended around 70 years later,
in 250 BC. In 88 BC, the theatre, which has a capacity of up to 6,500
spectators, was abandoned after the Mithridates plundered the island.
Today, exactly 2,100 years later, the Central Archaeological Council
approved a project for the restoration of the monument.

'Ancient' Greek statue found in sheep pen is fake
BBC, 3 April 2012 An "ancient"

Greek statue found in a sheep pen north-west of Athens last week has now

been deemed a fake. At first, archaeologists at Greece's Culture
ministry thought the figure of a woman dated from the 6th century BC.
Now, a closer examination has found moulding marks and traces of bubbles

which prove it is a copy, sources at the ministry told news agencies.
Two men were arrested last week for allegedly trying to sell the statue
for half a million euros (£417,000). The figure is 1.2m (4ft) tall and

depicts an archaic maiden, but experts are now certain it is a cast
rather than an original sculpture. They say it is an identical copy of a

statue found in the Acropolis in Athens, and not an item of "priceless
historical value" as originally thought.

Experts sound alarm: Looters tear up Syria archeological treasures
Middle East Online [UK], 2012-04-05

Syria's year-long revolt has exposed to looting and destruction the
country's archaeological treasures, including the ancient city of
Palmyra and the Greco-Roman ruins of Apamea, experts warn. Most
vulnerable are strife-torn areas that have fallen outside the full
control of the regime where looters have already targeted museums,
excavation sites and monuments, they say. "In the past three to four
months there has been a lot of looting," said Hiba al-Sakhel, director
of museums in Syria. "In Apamea, we have a video showing looters
removing mosaics with drills," she said. "And in Palmyra there is a lot
of looting and clandestine digging." Sakhel said other historical sites
across the country have fallen prey to looters who are taking advantage
of the violence that has swept the country for more than a year to
pilfer antiquities.

Smugglers foiled again
Al-Ahram [Egypt], 5 - 11 April 2012

Egypt's antiquities arena was blessed with good luck this week when 80
artefacts from various historical eras and the painted lids of two
ancient sarcophagi, all of which had been stolen and illegally smuggled
out the country, were found and will soon be retrieved. The saga of the
80 objects began in April 2010 when the customs unit at Brussels airport
caught an Egyptian woman red-handed as she tried to smuggle 80 small
genuine objects. She had concealed them inside two large wooden replica
statues and shipped them to the Belgian capital.

"Black diggers" challenge history
Voice of Russia, Apr 2, 2012

A group of Russian archaeologists have written an open letter to
President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin asking for
urgent and drastic measures against the so-called "black diggers" who
loot archaeological sites. Scientists are sounding alarm in connection
with a free sale of metal detectors and valuable archaeological finds
which are bought by dealers to be sold to private collectors. Searching
for buried treasures has become a fashionable trend in recent years.
People interested in it keep in touch on the Internet, hold conferences
and share their experience. There are thousands of amateur treasure
hunters in Russia and very few treasure seekers dig for profit.

The Italian government has launched a 105m euros (£87m) project to
save one of the world's greatest archaeological treasures, the ancient
city of Pompeii. There has been growing concern that the site, where
volcanic ash smothered a Roman city in AD79, has been neglected. A

have now put up the funds for a major restoration plan.

This week, during excavation work being carried out in the area
neighbouring the Ibrahimiya tunnel, Egyptian archaeologists found
another section of the eastern necropolis of ancient Alexandria that
once stretched from Shatbi to the Mustafa Kamel district. The newly
discovered area contains four rock-hewn tombs from the Graeco-Roman and
Byzantine eras as well as a number of tombs at a deeper level and a rich
funerary collection. Among the new discoveries at the site is a very
finely decorated clay container from the second century BC known as a
hidra, a large pot with a long neck that held the cremated ashes of the
deceased. Mohamed Mustafa, director-general of Alexandria antiquities,
told the Weekly that the tomb walls still bore a layer of plaster and
traces of red paint.

Bulgarian Archaeologists Find Ancient Vase Depicting 'Group Sex'
Novinite [Bulgaria], April 22, 2012

Bulgarian archaeologists have unearthed an Ancient Greek vase featuring
an erotic scene during excavations in the Black Sea town of Sozopol. It
was discovered in the oldest archaeological layers in Sozopol dating
back from the end of the 7th century to the middle of the 6th century
BC, announced Prof. Bozhidar Dimitrov, Director of Bulgaria's National
History Museum, who described the erotic scene on the vase as depicting
"group sex" as cited by Focus. "This vase, which was unfortunately found
in several fragments, presents a very strong erotic scene. Several naked
young people, boys and girls, are shown having sex in an unorthodox way.
This is the first time such an ancient erotic scene is found in
Bulgaria," Dimitrov said, as cited by Focus.

Archaeological research reveals an ancient temple in the mountains
between Ilia and Messinia, opposite the well-known imposing temple of
Epicurean Apollo. The area around the newly discovered temple was full
of architectural tools that were used to build a small temple, while
former head of the 38th Ephorate of Antiquities, archaeologist Dr. Xeni
Arapogianni explains that when the small temple was demolished in order
to build a new one, topmasts, triglyphs and other parts of the ancient
temple were found.

Pompeii wall collapses, despite new conservation initiative
The Telegraph [UK], 22 Apr 2012

The Special Archaeological Superintendent for Naples and Pompeii
confirmed the collapse of the red-frescoed wall next to an unidentified
villa in an area already closed to the public. The collapse of the wall
is particularly embarrassing for the government as it follows several
other incidents at the world heritage site in the past two year . There
is growing concern Italy's ability to protect it from further
degradation and the impact of the local Mafia or Camorra. Giulia Rodano,
cultural affairs spokesman for the centre-left Italy of Values party,
said there was a need to restore state funding that had been eroded by
government cutbacks. "How many walls have to fall, how much rain or snow
should we expect to see a turnaround in state finance for the protection
of cultural assets," Ms Rodano said.
