Hi all,

Had a quick look at the car this afternoon, might not be the 'bargain'
I had hoped for, still, you pays your money, you takes your chances.

Problems known when bought :

Leaking exhaust manifold/gasket - seems quite straightforward
Distinct lack of power steering - either fluid leak or hydraulic problem
Rust on rear of boot lid
Headlining dropped
Leak in drivers footwell.

Problems today :

Wouldn't start - engine turning but not firing - will be
checking/replacing dizzy cap, rotor arm, ht leads and plugs tomorrow.
Fuel filler cap won't open
Rear offside door only opens from inside
Heater fan not working

Regarding the headlining (start simple!), has anyone else had this
problem and if so, will spray adhesive do the trick?

Will keep posting with any other problems I find, and if anyone can
offer any advice on any of the above then please feel free!

Regards

Steve

Hi one and all.

I have a 1994 Jaguar XJS 6L. I am looking for information on the choke
system on my car. The car does not want to tick over when it is cold
and the mixture smells way to rich. There is a lot of black deposit
around the exhaust pipes. I am wondering is the choke is stuck on?
This fault appeared over night, and for no apparnet reason.

Please helps if you can.
Thanks Craige

I just wondered if any one has ever seen an xjs with cloth interior
rather than leather. I have heard there where a few made but not many.

Hello folks.

I've just bought myself a 1990 2.9l auto XJ40 - it's my first Jaguar
because up to now I've been a Rover 800 man (still am and currently
have 4 of them!). As such, I'm in for a steep learning curve.

Anyway, the car.

Sellers description (from Practical Classics web forum):

"Jaguar 2.9l auto XJ40 is for sale. Just got 12 months MoT, SORN, no
advisories. Never welded, solid underneath, no leaks, no drips, no
rattles, all in very good conditon. Blue metallic, leather, aircon but
pump seized, no radio, all warning lights on then off, 130,000 miles.
Didn't suit me as a business car, back to a J reg Range Rover again.

Has to go, scrap or sell."

I reckon that at £250 it has to be worth it. If it's no good, it's
worth more than that as parts.

http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w293/moggie99/Jaguar/P5170009.jpg
http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w293/moggie99/Jaguar/P5170010.jpg
http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w293/moggie99/Jaguar/P5170014.jpg
http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w293/moggie99/Jaguar/P5170016.jpg
http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w293/moggie99/Jaguar/P5170012.jpg

http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w293/moggie99/Jaguar/P5170018.jpg

It needs a damn good clean up and polish and, in the fullness of time,
that dent on the wing and the little bit of rust near the rear
screen/filler flap sorting. An LPG kit from ebay will keep the running
costs manageable.

I intend (as I have always intended) to make my mk1 Rover 827 Sterling
my daily runner and sell the rest of my 800 collection. This Jaguar
is intended as a replacement for my MGC - so that will be sold soon.

Now I know I've done this the wrong way around but.....is there a
buyer's guide available for the XJ40? If so, where do I find it?

Any advice, tips or warnings?

Thanks

Hi There

Glad you're thinking of joining Jaguar World!!

My advice would be to have gone for a 3.6 or 3.2 as the 2.9 is
somewhat underpowered and you don't get much better fuel economy
because you have to work the car that much harder.

But it should still be smooth quiet comfortable and handle well and
for the money it has to be worth it even if you only get 6 months
motoring out of it!!! £10 a week is cheap motoring these days! And
as you say it is worth that in parts.

There is a very good Haynes book about the XJ40 range ( not a fix-it
manual but a proper history of the model and what to look out for
sort of thing)

The XJ40 has always had a tough time because it had to replace the
gorgeous Series 3 XJ and that was always going to be a tough act to
follow.

I remember buying a 1980 Daimler Soverign 4.2 in Met Blue back in
1993. It was very rusty at door bottoms but went brilliantly and was
a delight to sit in. It had 12 months MOT and I paid only £150 for
it then moved it on after the year. But old and rusty though it was
it was a great driver with a lovely interior. I loved it!!

So don't regret what you've done, just enjoy it!!And I'm quite sure
it won't be your last Jaguar...

David

I need to retrieve my "new" 2.9 litre automatic XJ40 (1990 model) and
may have to tow it. I'm trying to avoid the expense of hiring a trailer.

I know that most manufacturers prohibit towing of autos (usually
because the transmission fluid won't be pumped around the box if the
engine isn't running) - but what if I had the XJ40's engine running
and the auto box in neutral?

Any thoughts?

I should add that it will be a distance of 80 miles or so and, because
I don't plan to use the car immediately, I don't want to tax and
insure it yet, either.

Richard,

Not sure about the gearbox implications but when towing to have the engine
running would be very benificial for braking and steering reasons.

I am under the impression when towing a car it is considered as
a trailor and so does not need it's own MOT Tax and insurance as it is
covered by the towing vehicle. Don't know if having the engine running
makes any differance.

Ashley.

PS the Rover radiator is doing a sterling job, as well as normal daily use
the car has been to Southampton 3 times, Gatwick and North Yorkshire and not
lost a drop of water! Thanks again.

Ashley,

Thanks for the input.

Glad that the rad (and hopefully the heater resistor) are doing the
business. My mk1 Sterling is coming along well - another 3-4 weeks and
I should be able to get rid of my mk2 820.

Hi All

I own a 94 XJ6 145,000, I know that the head gasket it shot. Would i be better
trying to change the gasket or replacing the whole engine with another engine w/
appx 89,000 miles? I was going to just replace the gasket and got up to
removing the timing chain but stopped due to needing an alignment tool. What's
my best choice?

Thanks In Advance

Jim

Hi folks

Just came across this group and thought it would be nice to be in touch with
other people with a passion for the big cats. I'm on to my 6th Jag now, a 1980
series III 4.2 converted to LPG.

I've gone full circle, started out with a series and got back to them again,
after all XJ40's in between.

Look forward to getting to know you.

Nic

Don't bother replacing the whole engine. You will be merely delaying the
inevitable as the HG will go on the lower mileage engine sooner or later...

HGF is common unfortunately and this occurred on my XJ-S a few years back (but
not since I did the job PROPERLY)

A few pointers:

Don't just slap a new HG in without renewing the valve stem seals as well.
They'll be well shot anyway, so change them while you can.

If you are referring to the camshaft alignment tool then NO. As long as you set
the engine to TDC BEFORE removing the chains and pulleys and then mark positions
of both cams and caps clearly you should be ok.

Accept the fact that the Head will probably need skimming before reassembly.
Reduce the cost by removing the stretchbolts in reverse order. Jaguar recommend
the bolts be renewed but I have been reliably informed that they can be re used
3 times. Check for punch marks on the heads. If there are none you can assume
the bolts are good for another go. I bought new ones to eliminate the risk
though...(£70)
Skimming by Listers (yes, THAT Listers!) cost me another £70.

Cam chain slippers (upper and lower) will also need renewal. Cost these into the
project...

The other special tool you will need is the 'Cam chain tensioner'. Available
from the JEC for megabucks. I made my own and it worked ok

Good luck!
