Hi All,

Drove to work the other day, car ran like a dream. Went to start her that night
and all she
would do is turn over but not fire. AA arrived, pulled rubber bungs out of spark
plug holes
to find oil in pots 1,2 and 6. NOTE: Oil was ON TOP of the plugs not in the
bores
themselves. Removed and cleaned plugs, turned engine over.... Still wouldn't
fire.
Removed bungs again and again oil all over 1,2 & 6 plugs. The coil was fine and
producing
a good spark.

Yesterday had Rocker Cover Gasket repaired. I wasn't here but guy said he
replaced plugs,
oil, filter and gasket. Turned key and she fired up first time. After 10 or 20
seconds she
cut out and has not started since. She turns over but doesn't start. The clown
then cleared
off to another job leaving me with a flat battery and a number for his mate who
claimed to
be an auto electrician.

Along comes idiot number two who tinkers for 20 minutes then leaves. This "Auto
Electrician" had no jump leads or power pack but called me to say "I by-passed
your
immobiliser so it should work now!!" I went to jump it tonite but needless to
say it failed to
start. He charged my wife £20 for that by the way! Oh, I think his thought
process was that
the immobiliser was faulty and therefore cutting out the fuel pump.

SO.... net result, I am down £150 and my beloved Jag still sits outside dead.
She is a K (93)
XJ6 4.0 litre Sovereign. I am in the Manchester area. Does anyone have any ideas
at all or
know a mechanic in this neck of the woods who has not been lobotomised? I am
totally
desperate now. I am stuffed without the car.

A mate did offer a small piece of advice tonite. he said that it was unusual for
the rocker
gasket to go and that it might have something to do with a Pressure Valve in the
oil
system. I had been aware of the oil pressure fluctuating between good (12-1 O
Clock)
when driving along to OCCASIONALLY dropping right down into the red when
stationary at
lights with the footbrake on. He seemed to think it was possible that this sump
valve may
be playing up causing the release of oil at the top. NOTE: When the plugs were
removed
from the bore by the AA guy, the electrodes (ie everything inside the bore) was
dry and
normal.

If any kind soul has any word of advice I would be happy to hear from you day or
night on
07736-847128.

Many Thanks All!

Mark,

Since I'm not familiar with these engines/immobaliser systems, I'd call in
at the local Jag garage (workshop not reception and try not to speak to
the boss) and casually ask if anyone does jobs at the weekends as your a
bit stuck. It might work!

Hi

I have a 1993 3.2 litre Sovereign with an oil pressure problem.

On start-up the pressure is fine, but after about 15 mins of driving
it drops right off and the oil warning light comes on. The oil and
filter have just been changed (was happening before this) and there
are no oil leaks.

Could it be a sensor problem or something more serious like the pump
failing?

Any help you can give would be most apprecaited!

Kind regards

Steve

Hi Guys,

I have a situation where the pressure when driving is really good (6
out of 8) but if sat in stationary traffic it drops right off and
VERY occassionally I get a warning light up for an instant. I
recently had a blown rocker gasket replaced, as well as filter,
plugs, oil etc.

There is no rattling or engine noise whatsoever and she runs like a
dream, delivering 29 to the gallon on a run. Before any long journey
I check oil levels and have to add a pint every couple of months, but
am doing 2-3k per month.

I just recently stripped the interior out of a 3.2 XJ-40 1994 that I
was scrapping. I have some odds and ends to sell if anyone needs
anything. I have a complete Dash, an IMMACULATED beige rear seat with
navy piping, door cards in black etc etc.

Please call if interested.

Hi David

Nope, no nasty sounds at all. The engine sounds as sweet as a nut.

Any other ideas what might be causing the problem?

It could be a pump but then you would get some rattling at high revs all jag
engines would do this with low oil pressure. I once had a 3.4 blow on me on the
M4 the oil pressure dropped I should have stopped but in the end the car did.

then I had an early 4.2 and the pressure would drop on that when hot but never
gave me a problem in the two years I had it.

If that is the case with you I would go for sensors but please remember that the
small jag engines have always been a problem ever since the first 2.4 appeared
in 1955.

I trust this helps sincerely David

Sorry to jump in with both feet, but before you start summising what could
be wrong pump, main bearings etc, make sure there is a problem other than
the instruments. Fit if only on a temorary basis a known good capiliary
gauge to prove the point. The senders for the fitted gauge are known not
to be accurate especially on older cars.

If there is a problem and it's main bearings you are very unlikley to hear
it but worn big ends on the other hand will be audible and all a bit
acedemic since you would only sort both out or neither in one go. If the
pump is iffy the pressure will be slow to appear when started from cold.

Ashley.

good point and well received but you would still get a deep harsh groan from the
engine under foot down circumstances at about 2500 revs if there is a crak or
bearing problem

pump is iffy the pressure will be slow to appear when started from cold.

jag engines would do this with low oil pressure. I once had a 3.4 blow on
me on the M4 the oil pressure dropped I should have stopped but in the end
the car did.

then I had an early 4.2 and the pressure would drop on that when hot but
never gave me a problem in the two years I had it.

If that is the case with you I would go for sensors but please remember

Hi David

Nope, no nasty sounds at all. The engine sounds as sweet as a nut.

Any other ideas what might be causing the problem?

Kind regards

Perhaps! but it's still acedemic since since if there is a
pump/bearing/crank problem it will probably be cheaper to fit a known good
secondhand engine especially if your paying someone to strip and repair as
needed.

Hi all

Bit more information, it might help clarify the problem:

Have been out in the car today and as before it starts off with great
pressure. After a few miles, when hot, it falls back to zero and the
light comes on.

Under 2500 revs it remains on zero (or near as possible). At 2500
revs or above the pressue returns to normal, 4 or 5 on the gauge. As
before, there are no strange noises at all, the engine sounds
fantastic at all revs.

This may be a stupid question but I guess it's worth asking - is it
at all possible for the pump to be "slipping"? I'm not sure how it's
driven by the engine, or perhaps the impellor is slipping on the
shaft?

Where is the oil pump situated? I can't see any obvious location,
perhaps it's in the sump?

Again, all help is very much appreciated.

Kind regards

Steve

Sounds even more like an instrument/sender problem, as before check
against a known capilary gauge.

Steve

Ok supposing your right (and I'm really not convinced) to fit a temparary
gauge would settle it and it is easier to to that then strip the engine.
Or look at it a different way, would you be happy if you stripped the
engine only to discover there was an instrument fault?

Steve

I am just talking from experience-----you could probably borrow a gauge from a

Hi Alasdair,

I have bought numerous parts (including a rear bumper) on e-bay.

Best of luck,

Hello, I am looking for another Jaguar in the near future. I have
previously owned a series 3 xj6, a 1981/1983 XJS V12, and a xj40 3.2.
I hae about 5k to spend and it will not be my main car so mpg not
important. I have recently sold a Corvette (very fast but abit flash/
only 2 seats). I enjoyed the performance, so I want a quick Jaguar,
but I also want it to be as diy friendly as can be. The cars on my my
short list are 1988 on v12 XJS (I like the later seats/wheels etc)
XJR (6 cylinder supercharged) xj12 (40 shape). I liked the
series 3 saloon but I understand the later ones suffered as a result
of emission equipment. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks Duncan

Hi All,
New here so hello everyone. I recently got a 92 5.3 XJS Convertible
(see album) and would like to get some trim parts (interior and
exterior). Does anyone know of any companies supplying items like the
wood for the centre console, boot lid badges etc?

Hi Pauline,
I have uploaded a file on here that is an excellent source of
information for the XJS. There was a 5.3 Litre version which is
earlier than yours. I am certain if you wade through the file(well
actually it's nore of a book) section which gives a table on how to
work out the engine and chasis numbers to determine exactly what you
have and also will give you some great tips on keeping that beautiful
car going.
