> Remember Becky Want's reinvention as "rebecca want"?
Ah yes, has she still not moved on from Granada Reports these days ??
That's just reminded me of a letter (there's a surprise)
I once wrote in with a "poem" about every Piccadilly presenter. My memory
is a bit hazy on this one... hopefully its on one of my tapes so I can
refresh my memory one day...
Becky Want
What does she want?
Becky Want
Steve Penk
What a colourful name
Steve Penk
Oh, I can't remember any more than that... I'm sure some were good.
Actually its reminded me of another letter... I wrote in once on very fake
headed Key 103 notepaper (I just drew the logo with a pen) - I presented him
with the "official" new Key 103 programme listings....
It went something like this:
1.00pm Rebecca Want - Lots of Bette Middler and random feminism
4.00pm Chris Tetley - Just what you didn't want on your drive home from
work - Tetters
7.00pm Anthony Shaeffer - Ghost Stories, Folk Music and errm more Folk Music
10.00pm Simon Sandiford-Mitchell - it was supposed to be Jim Reeve but as
most of the programme is about him then we thought we'd cut out the middle
man
1.00am Nightshift - no-one wanted this slot so it went to Mike Sweeney
Oh how we laughed... well I did anyway...
> I too have the 'official' James H Reeve tape although I haven't
> listened to it for 14 years. The Bumbly Bee was a classic.
I think I've only listened to mine once... I remembered quite a few from the
original airing which wasn't that long before the tape came out.
> James H Reeve followed Phil Wood into the 10pm slot after about
> 1986/1987. Both of them followed Timmy Mallett, until Steve Penk
> unfortuitously took over and ruined things.
Timmy Mallett - I didn't listen to it that much, but I remember The Rock
Cake where you had to shout STOP when you heard a record clip of the one you
wanted him to play next (or something).
> Sam Pearce! Must be dead now, real socialist old-timer. He was as
> instructive, informative and educational as James himself; where
> would we be without their influence - probably voting
> inappropriately for a kick off. I assume you (S-M) are not still a
> Tory? And that you will be supporting Tony in your postal voting?
Errm... not sure where you got the impression I was a Tory supporter...
actually I have always been politcally neutral and won't be voting for
anyone as I have chosen to do in each election. My choice is barely more
than marginal in all directions, so translating that into 100% for one
candidate and 0% for the rest is not how my vote share is in reality, so the
closest is 0 each.
> You are right in saying that your route into radio was more

> the comedy.
Well the BBC aren't actually my employers as I work freelance for BBC
Lancashire. I have previously (which I forgot to mention) been an ice
hockey reporter for BBC GMR between 2000 and 2002 which was facinating. I
did one day find myself in the same broadcast thing that James H used to do
his GMR show from once... They were showing me round the station when the
rugby league programme was on.
I very nearly (but not quite) got the opportunity to do a live phone in show
on 107.2 WIRE FM when I was the Runcorn FC reporter - they did a live phone
in and wanted someone who knew something about the team to present, but as I
knew nothing about running a studio, I didn't get the chance after all... ah
well. Only 2 people phoned up anyway and one of them was a friend of one of
the players in the studio!
