Steve,
To be honest I was just trying to extend to Simon, through this act
of social work, some of the generous left-leaning principles that
James himself would have shared with Simon if he were here now.
I hope you don't think I was being uncharitable. I wouldn't go as
far as a political activist did once in my days as a student. On
the day after the death of Freddie Mercury some student wag called
for a minute's silence in his honour. (They did this via the gift
of megaphone, which was ironic, if only in an Alanis Morissette kind
of way).
As silence fell throughout the Union, the official Leeds University
leftie - Lawrence Wong, I think he was called - shouted "only good
Tory is dead Tory".
Whilst Lawrence had a point in that Freddie Mercury was genuinely
appalling (and so, for that matter, are the rest of Queen) I wish
Simon many more years on this planet to come to understand the error
of his ways. Unless in fact he is a Queen-admiring Conservative, in
which case I believe there to be little hope.
Good-day.
M
