23 Tips To Making Windows XP Start 60% Faster

Whenever you start your computer, you are faced with a few moments of
thumb twiddling while Windows XP boots and prompts you to log on.
Although you should expect to wait for a few moments, sometimes
Windows XP seems to boot rather slowly. In fact, you may notice that
over a period of time the PC that used to roar to life seems a bit
sluggish instead. Fortunately, you can perform several techniques that
help Windows XP get the bootup speed you want. This chapter explores
how to put these techniques to work.

In an idle moment, I came across a profile for JHR on Wikipedia,
stating that he died of AIDS a couple of weeks ago.
Is this someone being crass? Nothing on the MEN website. Perhaps
someone would like to remove this unamusing comment. No doubt a Munich
was responsible.

Here is the text of James' letter to Private Eye this week,
following on from a previous cartoon showing the Christmas truce-cum-
footie-match between British and German troops in WW1:

HELMET TIPS

Sir,

This is the second time I have been forced to write to you on the
subject of cartoons about the Christmas truces of 1914. On this
occasion I refer to page 20 of Eye 1173.

British troops were not issued with steel helmets until June 1916.
They were not worn with a netting cover during the Great War.
Webbing was the 1908 canvas or 1914 leather pattern, not the 1937
pattern shown. The German tunic, whether Waffenrock or Bluse had
neither breast pockets nor lapels. And is that supposed to be the
Pikelhaube or the Stanhelm, which latter was not, in any case,
issued until 1916?

How much longer must this go on? I suggest you circularise your
cartoonists with this important information. Should any more such
items be planned for the future, I should be happy to advise.

I remember this phone in on Century 105, and I think it was on every midweek
night like the Legends phone-in is now. It was 6-7 and not long before it
ended, I think it was extended to 6-8 meaning there must have been another
reason for it ending, not poor ratings. I didn't get to hear it that often
but I remember it was on when I lived in Hindley Green near Wigan which
meant at some point from July 1999 to May 2000. This does mean that he may
have worked for both Century and Talk Radio at the same time - I think I
remember thinking this at the time. I remember that Scotty McLue (sp?)was
on Century 105 at the time and I remember thinking it would be good if James
went on the late night phone-in there, and so would reach the whole North
West and beyond if the other Century networks picked it up. McLue went and
I think Jezza's Confessions started soon afterwards, and the craze for
relationships and silimar problems type phone-ins began.

I vaguely remember James doing a football phone in show a few years
back with Mickey Thomas. He used to refer to the two of them as James
H and Mickey T. I think it was 105.4 and on Friday nights/Saturdays
but I don't think it lasted that long. Can anyone confirm this?
As I recall it consisted mostly of Mickey Thomas laughing while James
did his usual, he used to give Mickey plenty of stick. They were a
good team and worked well together
Did it eventually give way to be replaced by the legends show, now on
week nights still with Micky T ( who is the best of the so called
legends on that particular show )?

The show where the phones failed was Tuesday night 11th October 2005........

The discussion about the FM frequency and the old days with the caller was
around 110-114 minutes into the clip.

I knew about the 261 as the early car stickers used to have that on, but
they hardly ever publicised the 97.something FM frequency and that's why
I've forgotten it!

The old 261 and 97 FM jingles played are at 119 mins 30 seconds.

The one mentioning FM goes "Piccadilly Summertime Stereo 97" - James then
comments about how it was actually 97.3 - which I don't think was true.

The link is here:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=9PA9CVKH

You have to enter a three letter code and then wait for the download button
to light up, and then you can download the 30MB file of the programme from
that night.

Just found this about a late addition to the bidding for the new 106.1 FM
frequency in Manchester - Piccadilly Talk 106.1 FM.

http://www.radiolicious.co.uk/2006/10/04/piccadilly-talk-for-manchester/

Seems a bit weird to use Piccadilly in the name - does anyone know enough
about radio ownership stuff to know whether they can - or if they are the
same company etc.

If they (or the other talk radio bidder) wins it, then I reckon they should
get James H on!!

Can anyone remember the old FM frequency of Piccadilly Radio before it moved
to 103 FM?

I recently listened to an mp3 of a programme James did in Oct 2005 - it was
the night that the phones wouldn't work for 90 mins and James just rambled
on for all that time - but just before midnight Shaun (the
phone-answerer/producer) played some old jingles as he had been rambling
with one of the first callers to air around 11.40 with memories of the old
Piccadilly Radio. Anyway, one of the jingles went something like
"Piccadilly Radio 97 FM" and James thought it was funny as it didn't bother
mentioning the "point 3".

But Red Rose Radio (with Allan Beswick on at the time) used to be on 97.3 FM
and they moved to 97.4FM around the same time Piccadilly moved to 103FM -
and I remember Piccadilly and Red Rose were nearby with their frequencies,
but it definitely wasn't the same as Red Rose as I used to listen to Allan
Beswick on Friday nights when James was not on.

Unless they were on the same frequency and I used to listen to Beswick on
999AM ???

Can anyone remember for certain??

Just a note to say that I have revamped the jameshreeve.co.uk web site and
it is a bit easier to navigate now. I have abandoned the idea of using
notepad to write it as I had been doing for the last 2 years and have
switched to a template web design package thing. I am quite impressed with
the result.

I have not added any significant new content yet, but just to remind that
you can download the full version of Pocket Emissions as an MP3 and there
are eight clips from 1986 programming with much more to come there as I have
about 50 all together right through to 1990.

I put Google ads on a few weeks ago with the misguided intent to cover
hosting costs with it, but in all that time, a grand total of 0 people have
clicked on the links from hundreds of visits, so I have abandoned them and
replaced them with Value Click ads, which although slightly more intrusive
are much more lucrative and pay out cash just for people viewing them,
rather than click-through.

I haven't had chance to test the new site in anything except Win XP / IE7
yet so if anything doesn't work properly, please let me know.

I've started uploading some MP3 clips with letters and phone calls from me
and other WHGS people.

I've put 8 up so far onto www.jameshreeve.co.uk - all are from June and July
1986 and most have at least one old Jingle in them.

Plus one of the clips is of the record he played called "Your're My Son" by
"Kenny Rogered" - which contains dodgy lyrics - in fact he surprising barely
commented at the end.

He says it is from the album : "Never Mind The Original's Here's The Hee Bee
Gee Bees" and my extensive research finds this about it:

The Hee Bee Gee Bees were a comedy group consisting of comic actor/writer
Angus Deayton, musician Philip Pope and performer Michael Fenton Stevens,
all more well known at the time for their work on radio show Radio Active.

The band's biggest success came from the hit Meaningless Songs In Very High
Voices, an obvious parody of The Bee Gees, for which the band members
adopted pseudonyms such as 'Gary Bibb'.

Two albums followed, 439 Golden Greats - Never Mind The Original's Here's
The Hee Bee Gee Bees and The Hee Bee Gee Bees Present - 20 Big No. 2's,
consisting of songs 'by' "Jack Michaelson", "Larry Pilsson", "Sexist
Midnight Runners" and others. Several singles were also released, but none
had the success of the first. Many of these songs were also used on either
Radio Active or its later TV spin-off KY TV.

Hi Steve,

I can make IT things happen basically. My early background is in
programming but I've been producing web sites for over ten years. These
days I produce websites only for my own businesses, not for others, and
I run a couple of online shops (HYPERLINK
"http://www.alcoholfree.co.uk"www.alcoholfree.co.uk for instance).

To put it into context, when I was suggesting James did a website with
online audio it was in 2001 when things were a bit harder to do then
they are now. At the time my company had a CMS (content management
system) which I was offering to James for free. This would have enabled
him to produce a web site without any technical know-how. Things are
certainly easier now, but I'm guessing someone like James would still
need someone to help on the technical side of things.

John

Hmm, it seems the podcast idea has occurred to a good few of us,
then (see my last message).

I guess it's a no-brainer, really, isn't it? James would be free
from the constraints of station bosses and producers who don't seem
to realise that less is more.

JHR wouldn't even need a claque like Ricky Gervais. I imagine it
would be more of a "JHR speaks to the nation" type-thingy.

BTW: When you say "offer of help" what exactly are you offering? Are
you: an entertainer? studio boffin? Jaffa Cake wrangler? I think Roy
from Hyde would make a good guest.

Just found this group tonight. Hello.

Funny enough I emailed James last night to suggest (again) he does a
podcast, and quoted Martin Kelner as an example. The last time I
suggested this was in 2001 (of course they weren't called podcasts
then) and he was "considering" it. The offer of help stands today as
much as it did then.

Of course, his email address may well have changed in the years since
- although nothing has bounced back yet.

He was shoved sideways in the most inappropriate way. A message
left on his answerphone which he didn't get in time...turns up to
present the show as usual and finds someone else preparing to do the
programme. He carries on as normal. Ends up with the programme
controller coming into the station at 9.30pm on a Sunday night -
half an hour before the show is due to start - to explain what's
going on, which is basically that JHR's contract is not being
renewed.

What a shit: trying to sack someone by leaving an answerphone
message. I am so glad I am totally out of range of Key 103; I shall
never listen to them or their associated stations ever again. And I
am de-tuning "The Hits" from my TV. Wankers.

I'm glad that punk (the programme controller) has been demoted to
Preston, a shitty hellhole of a pretend city serving a county that
is a hillbilly shadow of its former self, featuring a parochial
commercial radion station which hasn't known any glory since the
days before Allan Beswick was trounced both intellectually and in
the ratings by James H Reeve in the adjoining county.

James presented the country's best radio programme: replacing him
with some wacky identikit nonce is just a total travesty. James
ought to have been snapped up by a national talk station years ago,
preferably one prefixed by the letters "BBC".

His mistreatment may be down to the fact that he doesn't conform too
easily and won't give an inch when he feels he is right.
Damn fine qualities if you ask me.

I too hated the ads but got around it by recording his show on an SD card
off a digital radio, then transferring them onto an mp3 player which I could
listen to whenever it suited, to and from work usually, skipping through the
ads.
Because I couldn't listen to three hours a day I had to start writing them
to
dvd ( I still haven't reached his final show yet )
I'd love some of his earlier stuff and dread the thought of searching for
something remotely interesting on my half hour journey to work soon.

Fingers crossed he'll pop up again somewhere.

Regards

Matt
