Being a ditzy blonde, I now cannot find all the gumph for putting together the description and details for submissions to the Kaffequeeria Queer Film Festival to be held at the Basement Social Centre between , but I would still like to submit a brief to be confirmed by Kaffequeeria Group and distro'd to loads of other lists and the mighty Mick Fuzz @ T' Basement, ASAP !
If anyone can send me the outline of the submissions to the Kaffequeeria Film Festival, or would rather do the listings and organising themselves in a more organised and experienced submission-type way, then please email me !
re clash of times with womens cafe and youth event.
this has been sorted out, the youth event will now run from 12-3 and
the people doing it say they will finish on time so we can strart
setting up for the cafe at 3 - kate even offered to help us set up if
need be, so we can be ready to open at 3.30.
minutes for meeting on february 28th
present: orla, lauren, ros, heena, humey, clare
next meeting is monday march 13th, 6:30, the basement
womens cafe -there is a clash with a youth event at the basement for the may cafe so we've changed the times to 3:30-7 to avoid this. orla is going to check
with nes that we will be able to have the space from then, especially because we booked it first! -we discussed how to make it explicit that the cafe is trans inclusive and for all who identify as queer women. we felt that all terms sounded
strained but would use 'self identified queer women' until/if we think of something better -there is a basement logistics meeting on thursday 9th march that some of us are going to go to (the more the better!) to argue the case for having
the cafe as a womens only space. some people were hostile to the idea last time it was brought up, or didn't want to guarantee that men involved with the basement wouldn't come in to prepare food etc. we felt that they
should be able to work around that for a few hours every month especially since the basement cafe isn't open on a monday so food prep wouldn't be that urgent.
quiz prizes -we decided on making a cake for the winners and finding a booby prize at
one of the basement jumble sales for the losers
film festival -we booked a date at the basement for this, 15-16 july -film ideas so far are: the original d.e.b.s pink mirror we need more! -we thought we could have a feature screening on the friday night with
food and a couple of shorts to open the event. we also felt that if there was a well known film showing on that day that people would be more likely to come and then return on the saturday -for submissions from diy film makers we thought we should ask for:
queer themed films on dvd/vhs send us a copy we can keep, if they want it back they need to send an sae -send a biography/synopsis for the programme -there are probably distros etc we can approach about suitable films
kaffequeeria -we thought it would be a shame not to keep up the momentum from the last kaffe. the basement is fully booked for april so we thought of trying the lesbian and gay centre off oxford road for 23rd april
-there will be another one on june 11th with lianne hall -we also booked the basement on 20th august for a kaffe. the diary is an academic one so it ran out in august, bu we decided that doing a kaffe every 2 months would be good.
-lauren suggested matthew who plays good folky music to play at a kaffe
wagamamas -kaffequeeria outing! we decided to arrange a date for this at the next meeting when there are more people and we're all a bit less busy.
for next time: -more film fest ideas -find out about a projector for the film fest - where can we hire one from/ can we borrow one for free? -bring finished quiz night questions -think about an email call for submissions for the film fest and who we
should send this to

(sorry to be slow sending these out)
minutes for meeting on february 28th
present: orla, lauren, ros, heena, humey, clare
next meeting is monday march 13th, 6:30, the basement
womens cafe
-there is a clash with a youth event at the basement for the may cafe so
we've changed the times to 3:30-7 to avoid this. orla is going to check
with nes that we will be able to have the space from then, especially
because we booked it first!
-we discussed how to make it explicit that the cafe is trans inclusive and
for all who identify as queer women. we felt that all terms sounded
strained but would use 'self identified queer women' until/if we think of
something better
-there is a basement logistics meeting on thursday 9th march that some of
us are going to go to (the more the better!) to argue the case for having
the cafe as a womens only space. some people were hostile to the idea last
time it was brought up, or didn't want to guarantee that men involved with
the basement wouldn't come in to prepare food etc. we felt that they
should be able to work around that for a few hours every month especially
since the basement cafe isn't open on a monday so food prep wouldn't be
that urgent.
quiz prizes
-we decided on making a cake for the winners and finding a booby prize at
one of the basement jumble sales for the losers
film festival
-we booked a date at the basement for this, 15-16 july
-film ideas so far are:
the original d.e.b.s
pink mirror
we need more!
-we thought we could have a feature screening on the friday night with
food and a couple of shorts to open the event. we also felt that if there
was a well known film showing on that day that people would be more likely
to come and then return on the saturday
-for submissions from diy film makers we thought we should ask for:
queer themed films
on dvd/vhs
send us a copy we can keep, if they want it back they need to send an sae
-send a biography/synopsis for the programme
-there are probably distros etc we can approach about suitable films
kaffequeeria
-we thought it would be a shame not to keep up the momentum from the last
kaffe. the basement is fully booked for april so we thought of trying the
lesbian and gay centre off oxford road for 23rd april
-there will be another one on june 11th with lianne hall
-we also booked the basement on 20th august for a kaffe. the diary is an
academic one so it ran out in august, bu we decided that doing a kaffe
every 2 months would be good.
-lauren suggested matthew who plays good folky music to play at a kaffe
wagamamas
-kaffequeeria outing! we decided to arrange a date for this at the next
meeting when there are more people and we're all a bit less busy.
for next time:
-more film fest ideas
-find out about a projector for the film fest - where can we hire one
from/ can we borrow one for free?
-bring finished quiz night questions
-think about an email call for submissions for the film fest and who we
should send this to
june 1st seems like a good date for it because then people could go to
shake-o-rama afterwards...
sarah, do you know if we can book the phoenix for this? and are you and
the pa willing and available?

Hi kaffequeeria I'm setting up some shows for the simply awesome ILL EASE
- the one woman art rock band of multi instrumentalist Elizabeth Sharp
(New Radinat Storm King)over to promote her new EP. "Miami and The Seige
of Chicago"
I'd would love to add a Manchester date particularly if Kaffequeeria are
involved. best date would be May 29 or Jun1 although can do other dates.
Liz's sick grooves feature drums/vox/guitar/loopstation/samples its a one
peice that sounds like a five piece.
Dates available May 6 - June 10 - (see current availability below)
We're looking for both headline shows and killer support slots.
Press information and links to mp3 and video footage are below. CD's
available upon request.

Brooklyn New York’s Ill Ease is the solo band of multi instrumentalist
Elizabeth Sharp. After playing drums in New Radiant Storm King for 5
years. Sharp decided to go it alone in 1998 recording three albums for the
Smilex label which brought her to the attention of Too Pure/Beggars Group.
Her first UK album release "The Exorcist" came out in 2004 and "The After
After Party Party" EP followed in 2005.
The Ill Ease live show is a fun fuelled whirlwind of deconstructed guitar
riffs, bass loops and drum licks performed as one seamless set with one
song melting in to the next Like Ill Ease recordings, many songs in the
live performance begin with the drums, are built up with bass loops and
fragmented guitar riffs, and then fully animated by cityscape sound
collages, aka found sounds, like car horns and police sirens. Elizabeth
Sharp runs the Ill Ease show from her drum stool front of stage delivering
her unique slippery vocal style which crests over and contrasts with the
drums, guitar, bass, shaker, tambourine and everything else that rattles
and buzzes. Ill Ease manifest snippets of Chicagoan electric blues and
warped Rolling Stones b-sides all scratched and skipping to a New York
noise with a hip-hop beat. Sonic dissonance with recalcitrant vocal hooks
that won't go home. Woozy rhythms that won't stumble out until after
last call.

Really want to help organise the Kaffequeeria Quiz Night on Sunday 19th March at the next Kaffequeeria Meeting, Tuesday 28th February @ Basement, 6:30pm, but alas, the final showdown of the damp squib that has been LGBT(+Q?) History Month in Manchester ends in flagrante with this Transgender Talk (Manchester Libraries proudly proclaims that it is the very first time a transgender person has been allowed to talk to the general public in one of their libraries - well, pat me on the head and call me Judith, about feckin' time !).
So, only points I can think of mentioning for the Kaffequeeria Meeting are as follows:-
1) Do we
need to buy real prizes for the Quiz Night, or will select pieces of Jumble from the Basement Jumble Sale on Saturday 4th March suffice for the job ?
2) Seriously, is the Women's Cafe open to born women only, or would transgendered people/male-to-female transsexuals be welcome there too, as I understand it is a matter of oppression and sliding scales of experiences of said oppression ?
3) What am I going to wear as trashy blond one-piece extravaganza "Mz Rue Bush" The Hostess Without Hosiery, for the Quiz Night Proceedings ? ! NOTHING is too tarty, I fear !
Anywho, have fab meeting and will Kaffequeeria Peeps be going to Wagamama's or an "outing" of some kind in a restaurant at some point in the near future ?
Manchester’s Role in Transgender History and Future A talk by Stephen Whittle
Author, academic and trans
activist Stephen Whittle was a co-founder and is now Vice President of Press for Change. He has been involved in the self-help groups for the trans community for over 25 years. He describes himself as ‘stroppy’. He is a member of the Parliamentary Forum on Transsexualism, chaired by Lynne Jones MP. Its work led to the passing of the Gender Recognition Act in 2004. He received a Human Rights Award in 2002

Hey Humey, I don't think I'll be able to make the meeting because I go to
Wigan on Tuesday evenings but I have an idea for a flyer so I'll make some
of those and drop them off for you, then shoot off.
Let me know if there's anything else you need doing! And I agree, the kaffe
WAS great!

hey,
we were all a bit tired at the last meeting so not much was said! figured
we could make a plan for another meeting on sunday? we were thinking it
should be the kind of meeting where we go and get food at wagamamas if
that suits people? maybe thursday 23rd? it can be a restful post event
meeting...
that's really cool about the women's cafe. if sundays are getting really
booked i don't think it would hurt to book a load in advance...
i like the name 'not on a sunday!'

sorry i didnt make it to the meeting last night - i meant to send this email yesterday, but didnt get round to it.....
re sundays cafe
just to confirm i will bake a cake as promised for sunday, which i will bring to the basement just before 2.
is there anything else needed to be done?
re the womens cafe we talked about,
eleanor only got back to me the other day.
she has pencilled it in the diary for may 7th and i think the first sunday of june too.
i asked her to pencil in a few more as they were booked up already
until may and it would be good for it to be a regular thing (unless it
is a complete flop...)
i will meet up with eleanor in the next week or so to discuss practicalities, locking up etc.
there were a few other things, but might be better to discuss them at
the next meeting? has a date been set yet for the next one?
finally for now lauren and i have been thinking up names for this thing
and tbh most of what we've come up with has either sounded too twee or
too dirty :o
someone suggested we give away free tea to get people along and alot of the twee name ideas were arounf the tea theme....
"not on a sunday!!!" is the best name idea we have come up with so far,
so suggestions welcome - something that sounds inclusive yet fun and
witty at the same time without being downright filthy!.
see you soon

Just asking for confirmation of the date, time and place. Humey
mentioned that it might be this Wednesday at 6.30pm as opposed to
Thhursday at the Basement. Is this still on?
minutes of meeting - 26th jan
next meeting - feb 8th 6:30 the basement (hopefully. the online diary was
hard to understand so there may be 10 other things there on that day...)
KAFFEQUEERIA
-gareth, ros and rose have made beautiful flyers for us all to distro.
-heena and tom are going to be the kitchen bosses. we'll make a food
shopping list at the next meeting.
-tom, ros, orla and humey will all make cakes for the kaffe
-ros will bring an amp from home. we will need to borrow 2 mics & stands
from 67 albert rd. ros will sort this out and drive it to the basement.
TENDER FOREVER
-this will be the 18th feb at the briton's protection. it'll be a
kaffequeeria weekender! there shouldn't be much work for this.
CLOROX GIRLS
-we decided we didn't really want to do this show.
QUIZ NIGHT
-it was suggested that we do this somewhere other than the basement, ideas
were kim by the sea as first choice then maybe look into marble arch or
taurus. we want to make sure there aren't any age restrictions at the
venue.
-the date for this will hopefully be 19th march
-rounds will be:
well i never (heena)
picture round (ros)
liteature (lauren)
film (holly)
history (clare)
music (humey)
-each round will have 10 questions, except the picture round which will
have 20 pictures.
-everyone will bring these to the next meeting
-Heena will be the quizmaster and Tom will be her glamourous assistant
WOMEN'S CAFE
-we talked about this at the end of the meeting, everyone thought it was a
good idea.
-lauren and orla are going to put together info for flyers which we can
then make
-we need to check that the basement will be okay with the event being
women only
-5th march will hopefully be the first`cafe
FOR NEXT TIME
final deadline for kaffequeeria zine contributions
quiz questions
ideas for film festival
figure out how the basement online booking form works!
think about music for the kaffe - the basement plays it through the
computers and last time because mick wasn't there no-one knew how it
worked...coud we plug a cd player/record player into the mega amp?
xxxxxxx
minutes for meeting on jan 12th
next meeting thurs jan 26th, 6:30 the basement
the basement was closed so we had to go to bar centro where it was 1.40
for a tiny glass of lemonade. evil.
present: heena, cass, lauren, gareth, humey
kaffequeeria flyers:
people making flyers will bring 200 to the next meeting so we can swap and
start distributing them. humey will email out the info that needs to go on
the flyers when bands have confirmed their tag lines
yahoo group:
this has been set up, you can email it at kaffequeeria@...
and access it at http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/kaffequeeria/
heena will moderate the group so we can be spam free
film fest:
gareth is emailing mmu students to see if anyone will make a film for the
event
cass has been in touch with jamie from filmonik who will send out a 'call
for films' on his email list
no date has been set for the fest because we weren't in the basement so
couldn't check the diary
zine:
holly needs contributions in by the end of the month. they can be on
anything at all, they don't have to be kq related
basement:
entertainments license - clare has spoken to morag, the community centre
license should be through in 8 weeksbut that doesn't cover entertainments.
basically it seems a bit precarious to plan the cabaret night for there if
we're not sure we'll be able to do it.
key holding - hopefully after the next meeting we will be shown how to
lock up the basement so we can be key holders which will make life easier
when we do events. lauren, gareth and humey said they would do this.
quiz night:
we decided that we should do a quiz night in march instead of cabaret -
ideally on the eve of sunday march 19th as this should be fine at the
basement. it was suggested that we could have comedy to break up the
quizzing
women's cafe:
it was suggested that we have a monthly queer women's cafe at the basement
with cake, tea and music - nothing too work heavy - and try and keep it
regular. hopefully to start in march.
we decided to plan the women's cafe at the end of meetings so there aren't
sections of the meeting that everyone couldn't be involved with.
outreach:
we discussed trying to get more people to the cafes, maybe by visiting
community groups and being more active in trying to get people involved
website:
we talked about getting more pictures on the website
for next time:
flyers!
zine!
film ideas
Hiya..
Yeah night and day is horrible - really hot and expensive.. I think Life
Cafe is also really expensive..
You could go for the Phoenix - it's not the best venue but it's free and
available on weeknights.. Or if you wanted to do it out of town the Klondyke
- depends if you think peeps will travel to it?
also i'm a bit out of touch with the basement but aren't they getting it
soundproofed at the moment so maybe it'll be ready for gigs by then?
other options are Fuel in Withington - it's free but is donations only ie
you can't actually advertise a door price.. downstairs at Dry bar - is also
free I think but may be a bit scally, retro bar if it's not booked up....
Oh and what about asking Jane Compton about the Mill in Salford? she may be
up for it ( I think she has something to do with the running of it...)esp if
they wana play with Valerie....
i think £120 is reasonable - as long as you get a couple of local bands

They sound quite good, so it would be nice to put on a show for them.
I assume it's 120 pounds between the three of them, so we should find
out if they need anything in the way of travel and accomodation
help/expenses too.
As for venues, I don't have any experience with which are helpful and
which are not so couldn't say. Night and Day Cafe might pull a good
crowd, but we'd need a demo to send the promoter.
hey everyone,
sorry i haven't sent the minutes of last meeting out yet, will get on the
case this week.
here is the info that needs to go on the flyers, we agreed at the last
meeting that anyone who wanted to make flyers should do so - the more the
merrier - and bring 200 along to the next meeting so we can all get some
to distribute. (please keep photocopying receipts so we can reimburse
money). if people can bring flyer masters along with them too that would
be great as they scan in clearer than the photocopies for the website.
the next meeting is thursday 26th jan, 6:30 at the basement

Hi,
I was in York today and got talking to Ann Kaloski, one of the
co-ordinators of the York Lesbian Arts Festival (formerly the Libertas
festival). Since Jenny of Libertas has stood down as organiser, the
festival is looking to take on new avenues. 2005's festival was much more
'arts' focussed than just the book festival alone.
Anyways, long story short... Ann is *really* keen that the festival is
relevant and interesting to a younger generation, not merely the old-skool
lesbians. Last year's festival attracted a younger audience, and she's
hopeful that the same can be repeated this year too.
She has asked whether Manifesta (and I proposed possibly Kaffequeeria too)
would be interested in organising something at this year's festival, or
generally being involved? I dunno, maybe a Pussywhipped in York, or a
lesbian band showcase, or maybe if another awesome opportunity like Lynnee
Breedlove comes up again that we could take to York for the festival.
At this point, she's just interested to know whether as a collective we
would be interested in being a part of the festival and injecting a bit of
'young spunk' into the festival.
Any discussion of this idea is very welcome, both on this board, and I'll
try my damndest to make the next meeting too if the reaction is positive,
so I can feed back to Ann.
See what you all think...

hey,
got this email to the kaffequeeria email. what do people think about
doing the show? sounds like it could be a good queercore show...
would be good to try and get back to them this week...
june 29th is a thursday
let me know what you think! (& possible venues...)

Hello,
I'm booking the San Fran/Portland band Clorox Girls for some UK
dates in June/July and wondered if you're interested in putting them
on? I'm putting them on in Leeds on July 1st and need a Manchester
or Liverpool date for June 29th as they're in Glasgow on the 30th.
I'm asking you cos you put on Hello Cuca who are pals of mine and
I'm tryna set up something fun for them rather than look for some
punk rock booker I don't know nothing about. I'd like em to play
with Valerie as well if thats possible, as I like Valerie a
lot and it would be a good excuse to come to Manchester and see em.
Clorox Girls are actually guys and are a lot of fun live and in
person, theyre originally from San Fransisco and are buddies of
Gravy Train and come from the same Queer/DIY/Punk scene. Yeah anyway
it's up to youse guys. Here's their website:
http://www.cloroxgirls.com/homeset.html so have a look/listen to em
and let us know if you're interested. They're cheap too (£120-£130
but obviously flexible if it goes badly). You probably get spammed
for gigs by shitty bands all the time but I think you'd like this
one.
Fanx!
