KAFFEQUEERIA QUEER FILM FESTIVAL CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

KAFFEQUEERIA is a queer collective based in Manchester. Not wanting to buy
into the commercial gay scene we are creating spaces to share with like
minded folk of all genders and sexualities, putting on the sort of diy non
profit events we'd like to go to. Most of these are based round the
wonders of music and food.

Have a look at www.kaffequeeria.org.uk
For more info and to subscribe to our wondrous mailing list!

THE KAFFEQUEERIA QUEER FILM FESTIVAL is an open invitation to all
independent, diy, no/low budget filmmakers, film enthusiasts and passive
auteurs with plenty of ideas and suggestions to make a pleasantly queer
weekender feature show happen at The Basement Social Centre, Manchester
City Centre between Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th July
2006. (For info on the basement go to
http://thebasement.clearerchannel.org/

All manner of queer-themed submissions will be considered for screening.
We intend to make the Queer Film Festival a heady cocktail of shorts,
feature

films and diy films. Enthrall us!

We extend a welcome, in particular, to those who have had queer-themed
submissions rejected by more commercial film festivals

We encourage folks of all genders and sexualities to submit
(broadly defined) queer-themed submissions.

We will provide a unique forum for diy filmmakers who produce
queer-themed films to run film-related workshops during the Saturday
afternoon prior to the film festival/ introduce their work/
run "Q&A" Sessions after their screening for an "up for it" queer
audience!

G E T I N V O L V E D
If you would like to have your say about what feature/shorts/diy films
should be shown at the Queer Film Festival, please subscribe to the
Kaffequeeria Mailing List by emailing kaffequeeria@.... If you
would like to be part of the collective running this festival and other
spangly not for profit queer events, please come to our regular meetings @

hey all,

just to say that after paying people's expenses yesterday we have £25 in
the kitty! which is a nice change to 2p pieces...also means we can afford
to get nice flyers printed at marc, so if people have ideas for these
bring designs to the meeting on thursday?

people seemed to have a really nice time on sunday and we also got lots of
compliments on get bent! and other stuff, so well done us.

have set up a riseup email list to transfer this one over to, if anyone
has any objections can you post on this list by friday, otherwise i'll
just transfer it over.

see you thursday

is there some text for the women's cafe that i can put on the website? at
the moment it's just down as 'women's cafe' and a sentence that i wrote,
would be good to have something proper. will change the name too.

hi

draft flyer attached
constructive criticism welcome, esp re making it more / less of a kaffequeeria event as i am still not clear on this (and any typos i may have missed).

if people are relatively happy with it i will run off a few copies to give out on sunday and can make any changes and print a fresh batch early next week.

re this sundays cafe, lauren and i can come after all and bring cakes, is there anything else we could help with?

hi humey

i'd like it to be something more people have an input into - at the moment it is just me and lauren deciding what it is.
in a way i think this is fine for now -  we are sorting publicity and stuff for the first one ( i WILL email pdf and email text later!) there will be an event and hopefully from then more people can become part of it.
i hope other kaffequeeria people are happy with what we are doing and will come, make cakes, tell ppl etc.

re the email address, i set up notonasunday as an alias on my riseup account, so it can be undone if we'd prefer to use kaffequeeria - i just did it cos 1-i wasnt sure whether the two things are separate and 2- also so that i could check the email, e.g if people email asking to perform / get invovled etc.

i'd be interested what other ppl on this list think about the email address and about how the event(s) should be.

jackie has not replied so could do with suggestions of other entertainement as it would be nice to have something (even a short film)

finally, we are not going away for a week anymore, so can bake cakes and help out with the kaffe on sunday :)

hey,
sorry to be so slow responding to the women's cafe / 'on a sunday' stuff:

(when i say kaffequeeria i mean the collective, will use kaffe for the
kaffequeeria cafe event - so confusing!)

i think putting kaffequeeria on the flyers or not depends on whether this
is a kaffequeeria event or not...is it a separate venture working with
kaffequeeria, or a kaffequeeria venture? if it's something we're doing
together as a collective then it would make sense that we put the
collective's website on the publicity as it will lead people to the other
things we do, as well as to info on how to get involved etc.
(i don't think inclusivity is an issue here as the cafe is for a
predominantly excluded group and creating spaces for excluded groups is
what the collective is about.)

if, on the other hand, 'not on a sunday' is separate to kaffequeeria with
it's own email address etc, then we can just put a link to it on our
website and forward publicity emails to our mailing list if required.

what do other people think?

hey,
sorry to be so slow responding to the women's cafe / 'on a sunday' stuff:

(when i say kaffequeeria i mean the collective, will use kaffe for the
kaffequeeria cafe event - so confusing!)

i think putting kaffequeeria on the flyers or not depends on whether this
is a kaffequeeria event or not...is it a separate venture working with
kaffequeeria, or a kaffequeeria venture? if it's something we're doing
together as a collective then it would make sense that we put the
collective's website on the publicity as it will lead people to the other
things we do, as well as to info on how to get involved etc.
(i don't think inclusivity is an issue here as the cafe is for a
predominantly excluded group and creating spaces for excluded groups is
what the collective is about.)

if, on the other hand, 'not on a sunday' is separate to kaffequeeria with
it's own email address etc, then we can just put a link to it on our
website and forward publicity emails to our mailing list if required.

what do other people think?

kq minutes for 13th april 2006
present: ros, heena, orla, lauren, tom, cass

FILMFEST-blurb is ready. just needed to confirm if it is okay to use heena
/ clare / humey's address to post submissions. HEENA to double check that
and let tom know. update: this is DONE- so we are ready to go with the
submissions blurb!

NEXT CAFE 23rd april-
- ros and heena to be in charge of food.
- ROS to ask rose if we can borrow her guitar amp to plug in a mic for
spoken worders
- cake: ros and cass have offered, and tom will make flapjack. agreed we
should charge more for cake than at last cafe!

***arrive at 12.30 to prepare!***

FUTURE CAFES
michelle green confirmed for june cafe on 11th in addition to lianne hall.
rosie lugosi confirmed for augsust 20th cafe.

ros suggested combo flyer for next two cafes- but more people may confirm
for august. we could put date of august cafe on flyer for june cafe.

WOMEN'S CAFE
needs volunteers to make cakes and to help serve drinks on the day
HEENA to ask humey if women's cafe can have page on KQ website and
practicalities

GENERAL FLYER

suggestion that we put what KQ is " is a queer collective based in
manchester. etc"
rather than the opening page to the KQ website "i'd like to be
excused...etc." as it sounds more positive.

tom asked if there was any money to print them at MARC- we should have
some after next cafe
any ideas / drawings for general flyer, please bring to next meeting

STICKERS-
cass would like to do a "having tea with the queers" sticker.
orla to find out from dave about whole sheets of sticky paper

ACTVISM- CASS to e-mail link to queers without borders stuff / bring some
info to next meeting

DATE OF NEXT MEETING: thursday 27th april, 6pm at the basement

hello kaffequeeria ppl!

Apologies for missing the last meeting and also for not keeping ppl up to date re the womens cafe "not on a sunday" which seems to be upon us very soon.

I will update you in this email just in case there is not time to discuss much in the meeting tomorrow.

* We have set up an email address; notonasunday@...

* there is also some text for emailing to groups / potentially interested ppl, and very similar text for flyers - i will bring that tomorrow.

*i guess we need people to commit to come and work the cafe for a while on the day. Any volunteers?

*Also needed ppl to make vegan cakes. Anyone up for it?

* i have emailed jackie hagan asking if she is up for performing some poetry at the event.

If she can't do it, can anyone think of something else that might work?

*i am putting together a flyer – might even be finished by the meeting!

* I have not heard back from sam who emailed kaffequeeria a while back about doing a permanent queer womens cafe, i though she might be interested in being invovled with this.

Finally a couple of (more) questions -

**could whoever does the kaffequeeria webiste put a page up about "not on a sunday" if i email the text?

Is that ok with everyone?

**what do people think about putting kaffequeeria on the publicity for this? On the one hand i'd like to put it on because it will be very similar, but on the other hand it may be confusing for people because kaffequeeria is inclusive and "not on a sunday" is not totally inclusive in that it is for women...

Personally i think it would work to leave KQ off the flyer, but have a page on the KQ website – what do ppl think?

see you all tomorrow

PLEASE FORWARD ON TO ANYONE YOU THINK MIGHT BE INTERESTED!

Hi,

On Sunday 16th April there will be a fundraising dinner in support of the
National Coalition of Anti-Deportation Campaigns (NCADC). The Dinner (3
courses!) will be at the Basement on Lever Street (Manchester City Centre)
and will start at 7pm. There will also be Live acoustic music from the
Waverton Collective (beautiful folky stuff)and entertainment from Chloe
Poems. Suggested donation for this event is £8 and all proceeds will go
to NCADC.

For flyer go to
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y195/captainmission/ncadcflyersmall.jpg

A bit of Background!
NCADC (the National Coalition for Anti-Deportation Campaigns) has gone
bust as all its funding has come to an end.

NCADC is not your average NGO, it is the only Non Government Organization
with a mandate to oppose deportations. Many, many hundreds if not
thousands of ‘failed asylum seekers’ who were facing deportation now live
legally in the UK because NCADC provided them with the knowledge to
campaign against their deportation.

The NCADC website has forms to download for donating - either a one-off
gift or a regular standing order.

Once before in 2002, when in crisis after The Daily Mail publicly attacked
NCADC and the Community Fund suspended their grant, NCADC appealed to its
supporters for help. Generous donations carried them through until their
Community Fund grant came through.

NCADC need 100,000 pounds to keep going! If you intended to set up a
standing order DO IT TODAY!
They are aiming to get 2000 standing orders for 10 pounds a month, lesser
amounts are of course more than welcomed, as are larger amounts.

hey,
my thoughts

i think submission wise we need to be telling people:
what kaffequeeria is
what the event is
why we are having it
when/where it will be
that we will be showing a mix of features/shorts/diy
we want queer themed submissions from diy film makers
we want suggestions for features/shorts/diy from all
(using mine, clares and heenas address is fine by me. heena? otherwise the
basement works fine)

i think the above is getting a bit urgent to be sent out. we can decide on
process for selection after this has been done? i doubt people will ask
about this before we have decided anyway.

submit to the queers is a good title

if we're worried about explicit content we could arrange films so that any
that are a bit rude could be screened late in the day and we can put a
note on the programme. don't think raciness should stop us showing films
or imposing an age restriction on the fest...

hey,
thanks for all this tom. I know as well that the
basement would be more convenient for me than merci in
terms of picking up films. If there is a problem with
having films sent to the basement, I might be able to
use my address (if my flatmates read this before I ask
you, what do you think of this?!) Kaffequeeria has
almost nothing in the kitty, so paying for a mail box
is definitely out of the question.

Yes, that's a fab idea, I will ask them, but if they do want hard cash in exchange for P.O. Box Mailing Address, how would Kaffequeeria Peeps feel about using The Basement Social Centre as a C/O address for submissions only ?

I will ask at The Basement General Meeting on Thursday, 7pm, if there are any problems or objections to this, as many activist types are getting campaign materials delivered there safely, will put a message on the list when I have more info and please keep the criticism and ideas coming for Queer Film Festival !

SUBMIT TO THE QUEERS ! Sub-Mission ! Kaffequeeria Film Festival Brief Debates to be discussed and dissected for April 9th Deadline:-

1) Some of the feature films on the possible list to show contain sexually explicit scenes, ie, "Bad Education", which to some prudish people would be pornographic, even though this was not the intention of the filmmaker - therefore, is it just pragmatic and not creatively limiting to include "no porn please" on the submission brief, and leave that to the discretion of the filmmakers to decide ?

With reference to the fabulously well-organised (!) Bill Hicks Film Night @ Basement recently, I imagine that if there had been children/minors present, we would have made it clear that the film contains strong language, and presumably, Kaffequeeria Peeps would only want to show the more "out there/extreme/daring/explicit" films later in the evening, like our own BBC-stylee watershed !

I will check with our resident AV & Film Expert Mick Fuzz what is the best and/or legal way of screening classified and age restricted material to open audiences and how this issue has ben addresed by The Basement in the past, as I am conscious that Kaffequeeria has no legal status and therefore the legal responsibility kinda falls upon The Basement's shoulders, as it will be a "responsible" Community Centre by July !

2) Sub-Mission ! Mailing Address for filmmakers to send DVD/VHS to us is needed ASAP, any ideas for safe C/O address if Kaffequeeria Peeps understandably don't want to use any home addresses to be put on all mailing lists and promo materials ?

Really good to discuss decision making process for deciding what films will be shown at next Kaffequeeria Meeting, Thursday 13th April, 6:30pm, as I have been communicating with various filmmakers to find out what they think the fairest way is to judge different films on artistic merit and be really good to har other people's ideas!

3) Mick Fuzz had really good foolproof ideas for ensuring there is reduced risk of prosecution for breach of copyright in showing copyrighted material to an audience by producing different sets of promotional materials (Advertise specific feature films on flyers for select group of individuals; obvious plot synopsis of feature films for mass flyering), and by NOT divulging names of feature films to be screened to open mailing lists, as this could easily get us and/or The Basement in to trouble !

Once again, the main difference with Bill Hicks Film Night is that Bill Hicks is currently DEAD, and no large corporate hollywood studio with international offices and resources owns the copyright to any of his material, so fairly low risk to The Basement in screening this !

4) Getting accurate contact details for reputable place which hires AV/Filmmaking Equipment at affordable prices to encourage people with ideas and enthusiasm (and no actual equipment or tools), to make and produce their own short films, which we could include on A3 Posters promoting Queer Film Festival as a website link or contact telephone number.

Please keep the feedback, criticism and pointers coming, as I can't wait to get the final draft approved, photocopied and distro'd out there, as the filmmakers I have already told about this are very enthusiastic about producing short films for the beginning of June deadline !

I've no problems with over 18 material being screened, but I do
wonder whether we would have to enforce an age limit on the event if
we opted for sexually explicit material. If we would, then I would
say nothing of an overtly graphic nature be shown, but I'll try and
look into the implications of film ratings and public showings, see
whether anyone would actually get into trouble and what authorities
would enforce action.

Still, I doubt there would be anyone coming round to check, and I
imagine that if any minors did turn up, they would be mature and
sensible. We could just go for it anyway. What was done for the Bill
Hicks film night last Sunday?

> 4) Ideas for promo stuff included "SUBMIT TO THE QUEERS ! SUBMIT
TO THE QUEENS ! SUB-MISSION ! IN punky anti-authoritarian monarchy-
mocking stylee !

My choice would be "Submit to the Queers!". "Queens" would work if
we had the queens head motif going on, but I think someone mentioned
Homo-electric had a similar design and to me, "Queens" carries male
specific connotations, when the event should be evenly weighted. But
perhaps I'm looking into it too much.

films

All sounds fine to me!

As for submission addresses and who's going to watch the videos, I'd
say it's going to be a very hard process for one person to look at
and decide on all the sumbissions, especially if we get a
significant response. Depending on the volume of films, we could
perhaps take a couple of VHS/DVDs each to view privately, decide if
they are good or not, narrow it down and bring a more manageable
number to a group viewing where we can come to a decision
collectively.

Problems are that it would still require lots of clear diaries and
as for viewing privately, well, it's all a matter of personal taste,
and there's no chance for democratic choice at the earliest of
stages. So obviously not full-proof but I'd be welcome to
suggestions on how to improve on the plan or examples of different
ways of doing things.

Hicks film night last Sunday?

mocking stylee !

After much deliberation with friends and fellow queers, I have a rough first draft for the submission brief to be dissected and amended and mashed-up appropriately by the Kaffequeeria Kollektive by next week, as we need to get all the flyers, posters and final email sent out to every possible list, forum and filmmaker-related website out there in cyberspace !

There have been more questions than answers unfortunately, which can only be dealt with by Kaffequeeria Peeps as a group, such as:-

1) What is the consensus on sexually explicit material being shown, and what is the definition of "pornography", should we explicitly state "no porn please" on the submission brief ?

2) The feature films will have to be kept secret and only handed out toa select group of people/flyers to avoid potential prosecution for breach of copyright, so we need a few designs and to discuss more about feature films.

£) What address will we be using for people to submit and send DVD's/VHS to  and who will be responsible for cataloguing and/or watching  them ?

4) Ideas for promo stuff included "SUBMIT TO THE QUEERS ! SUBMIT TO THE QUEENS ! SUB-MISSION ! IN punky anti-authoritarian monarchy-mocking stylee !

-for submissions from diy film makers we thought we should ask for:

queer themed films
on dvd/vhs
send us a copy we can keep, if they want it back they need to send an sae
-send a biography/synopsis for the programme
-there are probably distros etc we can approach about suitable films

present: tom, storm, heena, cass, marion, sarah, gareth, humey

next meeting will be thursday april 13th, 6:30 at the basement

FILM FESTIVAL
- we discussed the email call for submissions, tom is going to write this
for the end of this week (2nd april) and post it on the yahoo group.
if anyone has any amendments they need to be made by 9th april. the most
recent version on the list at that point is the one we should send
out.
- we thought we could also put this into flyer form to leave out at other
film events
- we decided to put on the rant on the frontpage of the website, or ??? at
the end of the call for submissions so people can see what
kaffequeeria is about as it might help with submissions
- the deadline for submissions is to be the end of may. if we haven't had
many by that point we can extend it by a few weeks
- sarah is going to email john from queer up north about putting us in
touch with film makers who submitted to queer up north whose films
weren't chosen.
- we had the idea of having workshops during the day of the 15th as we
can't show films at the basement in the day as the cafe is open. sarah
is going to ask the person who runs the 'girls on film' event about doing
a workshop. humey will ask louis and yaz who are both film makers and
activists. we decided both practical workshops and discussion workshops
would be nice.
- we talked a bit about copyright, heena is going to look into copyright
laws and how much it might cost us to get permission for showing some
of the bigger films. tom is going to ask mick what the basement have done
in the past about copyright. we thought since we want to widely
publicise the event, and since the features will be crowd pullers that we
should try and be careful about this. screening things for
'educational purposes' may be a way around this if we argue that it's a
student event...
- at the moment it looks like we'll screen about 3 features but we'll have
to see how many diy submissions we get.
- we decided it would be good to get on the community arts northwest
mailing list, queer up north mailing list and filmonik mailing list

KAFFES
- chloe poems, rosie lugosi and michelle green are all keen and willing to
perform at a future kaffe which is good news
- chloe didn't want to perform for less than half an hour as she felt that
any less makes the persona too cabaret. we decided that chloe is so
good that half an hour is fine
- humey has emailed lik:t young women's health project about reading
extracts of their recent play at the open mic or a future kaffe

GET BENT
- humey has been in touch with islington mill about doing the next get
bent there, we are waiting to hear back about availability and costs for
the weekend of 1-3 sept
- we discussed ideas for the next event: having more experimental music,
more workshops and a less typical disco (not riot grrl-esque).
- up sides of having it at the mill is that there are 3 floors so there
would be space for all this to go on and to have a floor for people to
sleep
- down sides are it being a bit hard to find, accessibility issues and
security issues. we wouldn't want to hire bouncers
- we also talked about getting funding for the event, awards for all are
under subscribed so they might be worth a try. if we got funding we
could make the event completely free which would be great
- we also talked a bit about making the event more inclusive etc which
will be a condition of funding and will also require a lot of work from
us. ideally this would be what we will do but we need to be prepared for
extra work.
- on the publicity for get bent we thought we should put more info on it
about the costs of manchester pride and how the money does not all go
to charity etc to draw more comparisons with what we are trying to do and
why there needs to be an alternative

GENERAL KAFFEQUEERIA FLYER
- we decided this should be double sided, one side having the website
blurb/rant and one with an outline of events we have done in the past
- so we can all have input on what the flyer will be like we thought we
could put it together at the next meeting or bring ideas and drafts. as
it's a long term idea there is no big urgency so we can take a bit of time
to make it how we all like
- people agreed that doing the flyers at marc would be nice as they'll be
nice colours. if you do a lot of copying at marc it works out pretty cheap
and they use eco inks and recycled paper etc
- cass also suggested doing kaffequeeria stickers and subvertising
stickers to put around town. we could maybe put these together at the next
meeting

ACTIONS
- we talked a bit about being more activisty, ideas were:
prisoner support
campaigns around giving blood - gay or bi men are still not allowed to
being in the manchester pride march to publicise get bent. doing another
action around 'pride'
queers without borders, cass will bring info to the next meeting
putting on benefits
climate camp, maybe having a queer space in the 'manchester village' section
being a visibly queer presence at demonstrations, by dressing up and being
very camp

for next time:
- decide on a kitchen master for the next kaffe
- talk about / create general kaffequeeria flyers
- talk about / create kaffequeeria subvertising and slogan stickers
- look at awards for all funding application

i think it'd be good to discuss it on tuesday, that way we can get them
out sooner! was also thinking it'd be nice to do the general kq flyers at
marc (diy photocopiers that do loads of different coloured papers and
inks) since they'll be ones we can use for ages...what do people think?
