Subject: TRR results after TWO games on August 16th

After 4 months of not playing TRR, we today played no fewer than two games - and in spite of trying very hard to unseat Stuart F, he won both games and has if anything cemented his lead.

So hats off to Stuart, who continues to be the luckiest TRR player I know :)

The first game we played was the ice breaker, and had Stuart, Allan and Zoran as the Good Guys and Josep, Bob and Dave B as the Bad Guys. Stuart and Josep were captains, and after a fun and interesting battle-dance, the result came out to affect the 2009 and Eternal Leagues as follows:

We then went on to play I'm the Boss (super-hilarious, fun, interactive game that Josep won convincingly) and a small interactive bidding game (the name of which now escapes me, but which Josep also won), before deciding on another round of Roborally to round off the day.

For the second game, Dave B and Zoran swapped teams, but the rest of the team make-up remained the same. And once again, Stuart led (from the back this time :) his team to victory. The current league tables therefore look as follows:

Thanks for the game, everyone! :)

To all those that played Fire & Axe yesterday, they was a small debate about if
the place name of the town at the southern tip of Greenland was correct. Well, I
looked it up (yes, I know, too much time on my hands !). The correct name is
Herjolfanes, which has been shortened on the map to something like Herol (if I
remember rightly).

We played Imperial on the 10th May and, at long last, I have got around to
updating the league table. Apologies for the delay.
The game finished thus:-
1st Josep $142m 6pts
2nd Robert $133m 4pts
3rd Andrea $132m 3pts
4th Allan $101m 2pts
5th Dave $98m 1pt

Putting that into the league table we get:-
_________________played_______pts_________pts/(played+1)
Josep____________3____________14__________3.5
Richard__________2____________10__________3.3
Martial__________1____________6___________3
Andrew___________2____________9___________3
Stuart___________2____________7___________2.3
Jean Francois____2____________6.5_________2.16
Robert___________1____________4___________2
Tomas____________2____________6___________2
Carla____________1____________3___________1.5
Andrea___________1____________3___________1.5
Hannes___________1____________2.5_________1.25
Dave B___________4____________6___________1.2
Michael Y________1____________2___________1
Allan____________1____________2___________1

Sorry about the lack of formatting.

Sounds like an interesting session - 9 points to StuartF!  Wow!  And nobody on the losing side getting any points also is a first; I am particularly impressed with StuartF's persistent luck :)

I have updated the league tables and have posted the results on the LBGC site as usual, but think the situation warrants including them in this email too.

First, in the 2009 league BobR has lost the top spot, and StuartF has stormed in with a lead that is hard to beat.  Stuart, if you don't play any more TRR this season you'll probably win it - so you will certainly be challenged soon :)  Even though BobR's already impressive score actually went up, he still has been relegated to 2nd place and the rest of us are far, far behind...  Here are all the results:

In the Eternal League, JosepA has been #1 since late last year, and... now StuartF is back on top here, too! It says something about JosepA's skill that he - in spite of such a big loss - still manages to retain 2nd place though.  The other big movement is from HannesS, who moved up no less than 12 places and now sits nicely in the top part of the table, breathing down BobR's neck:

I think it is clear that we need to play more TRR soon, and that we need to think about how to turn Stuart's luck against him :-)

Result of Game 21 of 26 April 2009 (Game 6 of 2009 season):

This game was JosepA's team (1st, 11th, 20th in the league) versus StuartF's
(2nd, 6th and 19th).
This was the first time we'd played it for 9 whole weeks, since 22 Feb.

It was a very unusual game of it! I think it was the very first time that a
team won by killing off all of the opponents, rather than planting a flag for
victory. Not only that, but StuartF did ALL of the killing-off (or at least,
finishing-off). Doubly unique, if you see what I mean.

Of course, StuartF was only able to do this thanks to the efforts of his
teammate BobR being so woefully inept: I got hold of their flag without too
much difficulty, but then just couldn't get anywhere near returning home with
it. I spent my so-called return journey going round in circles, dodging MichalK
just enough to stay alive. "I blame the cards". Eventually, MichalK tired of
the dance, saw that I my own ineptitude was delaying my return enough anyway,
and went to join the defence against StuartF and HannesS. So StuartF killed HIM
off, too.

Mind you, if Stuart hadn't struck them down, they'd have died of old age (rust?)
anyway before I got home with their flag. And HannesS must have done his part
in softening up Josep, Dave and Michal for Stuart's glory, since it was Hannes
that got the MVP award.

Bad Guys:
JosepA..…Lost, killed by StuartF………………………………..…….0 pts
DaveB……..Lost, killed by StuartF…………………………………..…0 pts
MichalK...Lost, killed by StuartF………………..…………...0 pts

Good Guys:
StuartF…..Won, survived, damaged every opponent, killed JosepA, DaveB,
MichalK…...........................................9 pts

BobR……Won, survived………………….…………………………….............5 pts
HannesS…Won, survived, MVP, pushed JosepA into pit.7 pts

That will change placings in the Eternal League and the 2009 League quite a bit,
I'd think, with StuartF returning to the topspot. Give AllanM time to note this
and update the tables, then you can view the tables under "photos" file. If it

Hi Bob

As you know, I was half expecting a phone call when I was at the games session on Sunday (great session by the way).
The phone call never came but I can now give you an update:
I am now a GrandFather !!
Samantha was born this morning (Friday) at 5:55. She weighs 7lb 15oz.

Please feel free to forward this to the chaps who were also at that session (I don't have all the email addresses).
Look forward to seeing you at the next one.

I'm a fan of using BBG more for sessions reports, reviews etc about the games
played at the club, nice one.

On this note i've also posted a forum comment about Kaomaris - check it out and
add a thumb, comment or both to raise its profile and maybe get others
interested in that and the club site.

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/388791

I would also suggest supporting members reviews and reports as well - raises the
clubs profile, which is good.

Drat. Small mistake. HannesS got "MVP", not "damaged every enemy", but all the
points are still the same. Unfortunately.

Result of Game 20 of 22 February 2009 (Game 5 of 2009 season):

This game was 4th, 16th, 25th in the league versus 6th, 7th and 18th.

Bad Guys:
TomasP…Won, killed by JeanF………………………………..…….4 pts
DaveB……Won, survived, planted flag, damaged every enemy…7 pts
HannesS...Won, survived, damaged every enemy…………..6 pts

Good Guys:
JeanH…..Lost, killed TomasP, killed by board…………………..1 pt
RichardB..Lost, pushed TomasP into pit, damaged every enemy ..2 pts
BobR……Lost, survived, carried flag…………………………….2 pt

This was a fun example of the game, characterised by cries of "Where the hell
are you guys when I'm being outnumbered over here!?" (mostly from Bob, it has to
be said..

Jean and Richard jointly killed off opposing captain Tomas in an irrelevant part
of the board (according to panicked team-mate Bob); another way to look at it
was that they did a fine job of killing off the opposition's best player (2008
champion); yet another way of looking at is that supremo Tomas sacrificed
himself but took two of the bad guys away from the main action. A fourth way
would be: it was all just luck masquerading as skill. All were true.

Anyway, Bob went for their flag, got it belatedly after clever defence by their
Hannes. Meanwhile DaveB played "my best performance to date", dodged past Jean
and Richard (leaving Tomas to tie them up), grabbed the good guys' flag, and
waltzed round to plant it while Bob was still messing about near the enemy
flagbase, with flag, wondering how to get past Hannes and get home … too late.
DaveB planted a flag for victory.

So, Bob's recent winning streak came to an abrupt and very predictable end.

That will change placings in the Eternal League and the 2009 League quite a bit,
I'd think. Give AllanM time to note this post and update the tables, then you

Sorry for the slow reply.

Yes, it was a great session here last Sun 8 March.  Unusually just 5 of us, so it was cosy and perfect.

I loved both the "new" games we tried (despite doing badly at both - which says even more.)

Fire & Axe is a pure joy.  As Tomas said, it is very "thematic".  You have a viking longboat, and choose how to load it up and go trading, or raiding, or settling.  You choose which saga or mission to prepare for and go try - but others might be tempted by the same ...

On each mission/saga/voyage, you might succeed brilliantly, or the dice might fail you on a raid or attempted settlement (no dice-risk if you choose to trade).  So, don't approach the game if you HATE a bad dice-roll that thwarts your brilliant plan.  But that makes it all the more thematic if you DO get into the spirit of it:  ("Come on lads, great voyage, we'll trade on the way and then go settle Nantes and Bordeaux ... and maybe raid York on the way back ...".  Most voyages succeed, but they are all with a risk of failure if you plan to raid or settle rather than just trade.  Go with the theme.  Forget the one bad-luck throw and and put it down to the theme!  I loved it.  You enjoy the ride.  The only thing I WOULD say is that it might be best with FOUR players - it can take a while for each play, so FIVE players is slower than 4 would be, for no appreciable gain?  I came 2nd-last, BTW.

TomasP won.  He won mainly by being about the only one to concentrate on Raiding.  The scoring is so clever that, the more you dominate one aspect of scoring, the more you score for it.  Cool.  So, next game, if EVERYBODY goes mainly for Raiding, then the boons will be shared, nobody getting a big multiplier for their success at it - so setllement or sagas might score more for the one who aberrantly went for them alone ...  Cool!

"Powerboats" was also brilliant.  Opposite end of the spectrum.  Fast without too much need for thinking, but fun.
Interesting that NeilP and TomasP (who don't tend to like race games usually), both liked it too.  AndrewM won both of the first 2 races, then left the rest of us to fight for scraps of dignity in a tird race after he left.  In that third race, I achieved my best-ever :  I came second-last.

Powerboats is already great.  George and I were wondering how we might even add to it in the LBGC style ... there are these buoys where, if you go through them, you can turn on the laser mounted on the front or back of your power-boat ... which means you can go blow someone out of the water rather than just menially try to overtake them ...  Oh, and the TEAM version would be ....

Anyway, it's already good.  I reckon it could be good for the "difficult" number of 7 players, too, as the start game ...

It was fun.

This is a game that will definitely take a few plays to capture the strategy. Raiding seemed to pay off very well for Thomas although SAGA cards did seem to bolster the scoring significantly at the end, 10 points per card, hard to beat. I'm not sure the value of ports that are not part of a region?

We did play with 2 Variants outside of the official rules which meant Boats would cause collisions and therefore the collision rules applied and allowed some nasty blocking.... also the layout of the route. I planned the first two routes but Bob's finished with a real twister for the final race.

I've played Powerboats too and liked it. I'm normally not a fan of roll
and move/race type games, but this one is nice and the dice mechanics
work quite well.

It is quite harsh to have your own games played and losing at them, but oh well J. (not that I did that great in Powerboats).

The Powerboats game is very nice game. I do not like racing games too much, but this one is definitively interesting and smooth.

Well Bob it's been a while since I last made it to the Club and I hope this will be the beginning of my return... watch this space..

Had a great session with just 5 of us playing Fire and Axe (Viking Saga) which took a little longer than I expected but was a great game with plenty of theme, and a touch of "take that". This is a game that will definitely take a few plays to capture the strategy. Raiding seemed to pay off very well for Thomas although SAGA cards did seem to bolster the scoring significantly at the end, 10 points per card, hard to beat. I'm not sure the value of ports that are not part of a region?

We also played PowerBoats which is probably one of the better racing game I have played, although dice based it works extremely well. We did play with 2 Variants outside of the official rules which meant Boats would cause collisions and therefore the collision rules applied and allowed some nasty blocking.... also the layout of the route. I planned the first two routes but Bob's finished with a real twister for the final race.

I'll let Bob post the scoring if he gets chance...

Great session and one of the many reasons I enjoy the Club, relaxed, friendly, banter and obviously ME never winning a game... What more could you ask for....

I clearly need to do two things: a) Play more, and b) WIN when I play :-)

Until next time,
Allan

I clearly need to do the same if I don’t want to finish last in the league ...

Hi Neil,

We decided Antti won the tie-break 30-29 as we discounted my extra scroll which I probably shouldn't have received.

Hello again,

Within minutes of sending this, I realize I have made two mistakes...
The first is that Bob in fact was NOT at the top of the 2009 league
before his latest massive win, but now very firmly is. We clearly
need to make him lose a few!

The second is that if you look closely at the Eternal League, you'll
see that Felix apparently lost. Except he didn't: he did not play at
the last session - so what happened?

The problem occurred because in the previous session, Felix *did*
play, and he also lost - albeit with a massively impressive score of
4, which is a first for a losing player. In my less-impressive
spreadsheet, I had decided to call it a "Win" if a player earned 4 or
more points, and a "Loss" otherwise. This worked fine until Felix
entered the stage, of course.

Faced with the choice between figuring out a more sophisticated
algorithm and just writing "Lost" next to Felix's name, I went for the
latter. And then promptly forgot to change the cell back to the
formula when I added the latest results :)

Anyway, that is probably far more detail than anyone cares about - but
if you DO care, there you have it.

Until next time :)
Allan

Hi Robo-fiends,

That was one hell of a game you had on the 15th, and I've had to update the league tables quickly.  How on Earth did Bob get *NINE* points?  I think that's a new record, and as I am the one with all of the previous game records I can verify it indeed is.  Until now, Stuart F has held the highest-score record with 8 points - something he achieved in his very first game more than a year ago.

In the Eternal League, Josep gains top spot from Stuart (just!), Bob manages to go up 3 places, and Carla swoops straight into 3rd place:

In the 2009 league, Bob extends his already impressive lead in 1st place with a rating of 5.33, and Josep again overtakes Stuart to hold 2nd place. In 2009, Carla enters on a 4th place - there is tough competition for the top spots here:

I clearly need to do two things: a) Play more, and b) WIN when I play :-)

Until next time,
Allan

I have asked Allan to do his wonderful formatting job on the
Imperial league table, but, in the meantime, here is the unformatted
version:

Results of the game played 15-2-09:
1st Andrew 6 points
2nd Josep 4 points
3rd Carla 3 points
4th Tomas 2 points
5th Dave B 1 point

Updated league table:
                 played pts pts/(games played + 1)
Martial 1 6 3
Andrew 2 9 3
Josep 2 8 2.6
Stuart 2 7 2.3
Richard 1 4 2
Jean-Francois 1 4 2
Carla 1 3 1.5
Dave B 2 4 1.3
Michael Y 1 2 1
Tomas 1 2 1

Apart from that one game of TeamRR, elsewhere in the session:

AndrewM won at Imperial, with CarlaA 2nd, JosepA 3rd, TomasP 4th and
DaveB 5th, I think. DaveB is in charge of reporting and updating the
Imperial league. Does AndrewM head the league now?

And Antti won at both Tribune and Cosmic Encounter, while Zoran won at
Colossal Arena.
