Apart from that one game of TeamRR, elsewhere in the session:

AndrewM won at Imperial, with CarlaA 2nd, JosepA 3rd, TomasP 4th and
DaveB 5th, I think. DaveB is in charge of reporting and updating the
Imperial league. Does AndrewM head the league now?

And Antti won at both Tribune and Cosmic Encounter, while Zoran won at
Colossal Arena.

Result of TRR game of 25/1/09, Game 18   (Game 3 of 2009 league).

We never got round to reporting this one, so here were the results:

Bad Guys  (1st and 23rd in the Eternal League, plus new-to-it AnttiL)

StuartF ... Won, Survived, Planted flag ...............6 pts

ZoranD......Won, Surv, Damaged every enemy.....6 pts

AnttiL........Won, Surv........................................5 pts

Evil Guys  (7th, 20th and 25th in the league)

AllanM...Lost, Survived..........................................1 pt

FelixK......Lost, Survived, MVP, Carried flag, Damaged every enemy ... 4 pts

HenningS...Lost, Survived........................................1 pt

I wasn't in it, and it's some time ago.  Let's assume that StuartF chased AllanM around the place, as usual, whilst with his left servomotor he also picked up the enemy flag and returned it home waving vaguely at some half-familiar teammates on the way.  FelixK emerged as the strongest player on AllanM's team – but lost again.

Result of TRR game of 15/2/09, Game 19   (Game 4 of 2009 league).

Good Guys  (2nd and 10th in the Eternal League, plus new-to-it CarlaA)

JosepA...Won, Survived, killed DaveB, Damaged every enemy.................7 pts

BobR......Won, Surv, planted flag, pushed DaveB into pit, damaged every enemy, MVP ...9 pts

CarlaA....Won, Surv, killed AndrewM.........................................................7 pts

Bad Guys  (3rd, 6th and 11th in Eternal League)

TomasP.........Lost, Survived, Damaged evey enemy ..................2 pts

AndrewM.......Lost, killed by CarlaA............................................0 pts

DaveB............Lost, killed by JosepA............................................0 pts

Bob was assigned defence, but didn't manage to stop Andrew from slipping past him and grabbing the flag early for the Bad Guys.  As Andrew set off for home for the win, Cap'n Josep had turn back and get in Andrew's way.

Bob did at least manage to repulse the other attacker, Dave, mostly by pushing him into a pit.  Bob went to help Josep keep Andrew away from their homebase with our flag.  It looked all over when Andrew got within one space of victory, but Josep pushed him out of control just in time.

Meanwhile Carla had got the enemy flag for Josep and Bob pretty quickly, too.  Then she played a blinder.  (or played blind, not sure which!).   She threw the enemy into confusion by going where they would least expect her – mainly in the direction away from her own homebase, spending quite some time wandering along the furthest edge of the board, waving their flag to taunt them (they could just see her in the distance).  It worked.  No-one knew where she'd pop up next;  and I mean no-one !   Sshe distracted them long enough, accidentally sharp-shooting Andrew and Bob from a distance, that it gave Bob the chance to speed things up by going and getting their flag and carrying home a more direct way – but it was Carla that won it for the team by keeping them guessing.

Great game!  Allan will presumably update the league tables with the result of 15/2/09.   Josep might even have overtaken StuartF ...

Great session on Sunday! I realised afterwards that in our Cosmic
Encounter game I could have used my 'Trader' power to greater effect
against Antti's 'Gambler' by simply giving him my hand before each
encounter. Less room for bluff. Unfortunately for Neil his bad call
against the Gambler put him out of the game at the very start. Disaster.
Nice to see you all, until next time, have a good week.

Just to support Bob,

If you looking to play any style of Board Game then LBGC is the place
to be, Bob is a fantastic host and the variety and experience of
gaming at this club is great. It's just sad that I have not been able
to attend for some time, my loss indeed.

Good post Bob. I'm a regular and i too was beginning to think we only did RR! - just kidding (i just thought it was mainly RR ;)).

It might be a good time to get feedback on what games - new and old - members are really keen to play. So if we ignore fillers (as these can be slotted in more or less anytime), what games are members wanting to play?? It would be good to separate them into medium and long games and whether you are interested or very keen or words to that effect. If you have a game in question, please indicate. In terms of the long games , as these take longer to play, they will  require a bit more planning to get to the table. So to get things going here's my 'want to play' list...

Medium games: Tribune (have) - keen to play a few times since its new.

Battlestar Galactica - played once, interested to play again.

Through the Ages - keen.

Tide of Iron (have) - looking to introduce this to the club at some point with shorter scenarios - longer ones are better but er longer.

Dominion - interested.

Fury of Dracula (have) - always like to play this.

Race for the Galaxy - keen - i think this has been played at the club a few times and i've not been present to play it.

Long: Axis and Allies Anniversary Edition (have) - again looking to play this at the club - best A&A game to date IMHO.

Twilight Imperium 3  (have as with several members).

Both the above long games are epics so will definitely require planning.

Hi Bob and everyone,

As promised, I have typed in the results of all of our Perikles games and have posted the first updated league table based on the game we played on Feb 1st.  As you can  tell, I chose my moment for this - until now, I have not exactly been dping brilliantly:
[Updated league table]

However, in this last game I managed to sneak a win (as Bob described, by sneakily forcing the game to end after just 2 instead of the normal 3 rounds), which gave me a big jump up the tables.

Bob remains in position 1 - he has won 3 times and lost just once,  although he hasn't played for a while so I think it is time we challenge him and get him off the Top Spot :)

Felix has the most monotonous record of everyone: he has played 4 games, and got 3 points (i.e. came 2nd) every single time. That is no mean feat!

After thinking about it, I have kept the scoring formula the same as for Roborally: Points, divided by number of games played plus 1.  That way, it remains relatively volatile - and the suggestion Bob had for improving it did nothing to get him away from the top... :)

Comments, suggestions welcome.  If you don't have any, let's just play!

4 people played Perikles last Sunday, thus enjoying it hugely and also
pushing onwards the Perikles League positions.

Latest result (Game 9 of 1/2/09):

AllanM … B15….S19…C19…Total 53…...1st…….5 pts
FelixK……B15……S18…..C10…Total 43….2nd…..3 pts
HenningS…B3….S15…C12…Total 30….3rd…..2 pts
ZoranD….B4…..S10….C12…Total 26…4th…….1 pt

As for how that affects the league, after now 9 games, we'll wait for
AllanM to pronounce on that with a shiny new league chart in full
colour, in due course, no hurry.

I've collated the results of the 8 previous games for you, Allan, in a
separate mail to you, for you to work on whenever. But since you're
doing well in it, I expect it sooner rather than later!?

That Game 9? Hmm. I was only half-watching. (Any of the 4 actual
players are very welcome to give a straight or fun report on how it
went). I'll have a go:

Allan's early brilliant play was temporarily given a setback by the
other 3 wickedly conspiring against him. But then Allan came through,
despite them, by cleverly spotting the Athens/Sparta rule, and
bringing the game to a close just in time for him to grab the win.
Fair?

(I might be exaggerating a little - I want to enthuse Allan to
construct/improve the Perikles league ...!)

Allan, as the mail to you says, the formula for league used to be:
League points, divided by "games played +1". Just like in TRR.
However, I somewhere also tried it as league points, divided by TWICE
games played, +1. I think it was because the difference between
Perikles and TRR is that you are less likely for your rating to go
DOWN after a bad game? Whereas in TRR there are winners and losers?
Anyway, you're the league boss on this - YOU choose a formula, which
is ideally both fair and volatile. And preferably a formula that
doesn't make you overtake me in the Perikles yet!

Cheers,
     Bob

(I thought of something)

Last week several played Billabong a couple of times. (I hear that
Michal won it every time ...).

Nice filler game, very positional-logical. I like it myself. Of
course, I tweak it - we only start with 4 'roos each instead of 5, and
we start half-way round the track, so that we don't have to go through
the irrelevant first half, but start with the absorbing endgame ...

But it stil has a huge flaw (those of you who know the game will
understand): kingmaker. Amongst grown-ups, around half of all games
end up with player A deciding, with his last move, whether Player B
gets to win or whether Player C gets to win. Very annoying for Player
B or Player C.

But it IS an interesting, fun, logic-puzzle of a filler game ...

SO, ANY SUGGESTIONS for a tweak to overcome that flaw? (I have 2
suggestions myself, but it wouldn't start a dialogue if I gave them
now, would it, and I'd be interested in your "solutions".)

Post any ideas or comments.

Cheers,
   Bob

As all you attenders know, we play a wide variety of games at our
sessions. But a casual visitor could be forgiven for thinking, from
the above posts, that we only or mainly play Team RoboRally! The last
enquirer asked whether that was the case ... After all, the last 10
or 12 posts are ALL about Team RoboRally ...

No, no (to any casual viewer or enquirer), Team RoboRally is only
about 5% of our play-time, often as a starter or filler or ending, or
none of the above.

In fact, to redress the appearance of what we play, here's a list of
the games we've played over the last 3 months:

Tribune
Billabong
Labyrinth
Blue Moon City
Perikles
Battlelines
Kingsgate
Team RoboRally
Werewolf
Race For The Galaxy
Cosmic Encounter
Colossal Arena
Antike
Fearsome Floors
Alliance
Wizwars
Guillotine
Warrior Knights
Galactic Emperor
Goa
Agricola
Condottieri
Galactic Destiny
Apocalypse
Imperial
League of 6
Game Of Thrones
Railroad Tycoon
Axis And Allies
Adel Verpflichtet

So why so much Team RoboRally in the above posts? It's just that:

1) We are a face-to-face-playing club, so the site is mostly for just
updates, eg of league-tables.

2) We play so many different games that we don't bother with a league
on most games. Currently only on Perikles, Imperial and Team
RoboRally. And, of the three, TeamRR is by far the shortest and
easiest to throw in the odd game of (and it's a laugh), so we fit it
in more often. Hence it appears more often on this updating site.

I must try to vary the subjects of our posts a bit more. I'll think
of something!

I need to catch up with those league tables, by reporting the 2 games played so far in 2009, for the record.  (They're already included in Allan's latest tables).  Modesty inhibited me from posting the results of the first game of 2009 until people overtook me, but given that that might never happen … ;)

RESULT of Game 16, of 4 January 2009    (Game 1 of 2009)

This game was 10th, 11th and 16th in the league, versus 3rd, 14th and newbie ZoranD.

Good Guys:

DaveB…….Won, survived……………………………………………5 pts

BobR………Won, survived, planted flag, MVP………………………7 pts

JeanH……...Won, survived, MVP…………………………………….6 pts

Bad Guys:

JosepA……..Lost, survived, carried flag, pushed DaveB into pit……...3 pts

KeithD……..Lost, killed by board………………………………………0 pts

ZoranD…….Lost, survived……………………………………………...1 pt

This game was lethal  - especially for KeithD.  At one point, all 3 players carrying a flag were damaged down to having locked orders, and still far from home.  There was a very lucky and funny twist at the end:  JeanH accidentally shot team-mate BobR the very moment before BobR planted the flag to win;  the only effect of this wild shot was to take one off JeanH's MVP-count, for shooting a friend, such that both he and BobR tied for an MVP-point each.  Lucky Bob.

RESULT of Game 17, of 11 January 2009   (Game 2 of 2009)

This game had 5 of the top 7 players in it!  It was 1st, 6th and 21st in the league, versus 2nd, 3rd and 7th.

Bad Guys:

TomasP….Lost, survived, pushed AndrewM off base……………………2 pts

AllanM…..Lost, survived, carried flag, killed JosepA……………………3 pts

HannesS…Lost, killed by JosepA…………………………………………0 pts

Evil Guys:

StuartF……Won, survived, pushed AllanM off base………………………6 pts

JosepA…….Won, killed HannesS, killed by AllanM, MVP……………….6 pts

AndrewM….Won, survived, planted flag…………………………………...6 pts

As you can see, it was lethal.  Lots of pushing and two dead robots out of six.  But the Evil Guys were well ahead when AndrewM planted the flag for their victory.  Losing Captain TomasP blamed himself for their side's strategy (strategy??!), but of course it was the cards, the cards.  Anyway, it took StuartF back to the top of the overall league, and to second in the 2009 league.  Gulp.

Allan's new-look league tables are awesome! They look great, and, in
case you hadn't realised, they're not just a lay-out and a look;
Allan devised a program, so that all we have to do is feed in the
latest results, and it does all the maths and updates the tables
automatically, saving me a lot of work and the odd manual error. And
that program was tougher than it sounds: adding in the nice touch of
how many places you therefore moved up or down meant the program had
to compare delta rankings over time …

Hey, with nifty programming like that, you'd think Allan would do
better when he programs his robot in the games!

A few of us agonised for, ooh, minutes over whether to start a new
table each calendar year (clean slate), or keep going with the league
we've built up. The answer was obvious: we'll do both.

So, you'll see that there are TWO tables. Any new results go into
both tables, one table being for the 2009 crown, only games played in
2009, and one cumulating ALL results to date, which I've
optimistically named the Eternal League, rather than the Total
Cumulative League. This has the advantage that you can select either
of them as the one that "matters". Me, I'm understandably giving
priority to the 2009 table … Allan has already switched his sights
to the 2010 table *evil grin*.

A natural consequence of this calendar-year league, is that we have a
Champion each year! And the 2008 Champion was … drum-roll …no,
you're wrong … it was Tomas P. The one week when Stuart F slipped to
overall second place, briefly, was the last one of 2008, when Tomas's
team pipped Stuart's team, making Tomas the 2008 champion. StuartF
took Silver, and Josep A took Bronze. (Since then, Stuart is
predictably back on top of the Eternal league).

So, congrats: 2008 TEAM ROBORALLY CHAMPION : TOMAS P.

I'll see what I can do about that, but I have a suspicion it's unrelated to Excel and more related to the results you manage to come up with.  OTOH, I'll check if there is a function that allows me to "IF NAME=DAVE THEN MOVE UP A BIT" :-)

In order to relieve Rob of some of the effort involved in computing the league tables for TRR, I have put together a spreadsheet that does it all automatically.  This means that we just have to put in the results of the game, and an updated table pops out - reducing the scope for typos at the same time as making things easier.

There has been two games in 2009 already, the last one on Jan 11th - I will leave it to Bob to describe how Stuart's Bad Guys team managed to win against Tomas' Dream Team, and just show you the resulting league table more or less directly from Excel:

It doesn't format quite as nicely as I would like, so here is a picture of it.  If it somehow works to embed it so it shows up without having to open an attachment, that would be nice:

Sorry to send so much mail on this topic: it's as if Roborally is all we play, which of course is very far from the truth...

Thanks to those of you who expressed an opinion on my last post.  I have now reached what I think is the format we will use going forward, and you can see it below.  You will notice that there are TWO tables: one is for the ongoing TRR league, called the ETERNAL LEAGUE, and the other one is just for games played in 2009.

I have included the pictures of the tables in this message and have created a "photo album" where I will put updated league tables when they change, here. This should make them easier to find if you want to without digging through all the messages, and also means that Bob can send his summary of the games without me then sending a separate mail with an updated table...

So much for the theory, here is harsh reality... first, the eternal league where Stuart has regained the Top Spot after an annoyingly convincing win last week :-)

In the new 2009 league, the situation is very fluid after only 2 games - with Bob topping it due to a fantastic win in the first game of the season:

Clearly lots of scope for things to change here as well.  And I really need to get luckier so I can move up a bit :-)

See you next time at LBGC!
Allan

Hi Dave,

I'll see what I can do about that, but I have a suspicion it's unrelated to Excel and more related to the results you manage to come up with.  OTOH, I'll check if there is a function that allows me to "IF NAME=DAVE THEN MOVE UP A BIT" :-)

Hi Zoran,

I can add "last played" of course, if you think it's interesting.  In the latest revision, I added a win/loss column to make it easy to see who participated in the last round - do you still think it would be worth having the historical info too?

Cheers,
Allan

Result of Game 15 of 7 December 2008:

Good Guys:
StuartF Lost, survived, carried flag 2 pts
DaveB Lost, MVP, killed by NeilP 1 pt
BobR Lost, survived, carried flag 2 pts
FelixK Lost, survived 1 pt

Bad Guys:
TomasP Won, survived, 5 pts
AllanM Won, survived 5 pts
AndrewM Won, survived, planted flag 6 pts
NeilP Won, survived, killed DaveB 6 pts

This game was four against four : 1st, 6th, 10th and 20th in the
league, versus 2nd, 5th, 9th and 14th.
The high drama in this game was Bob managing to push Stuart off the
Bad Guys' flagbase a moment after he arrived there, stopping Stuart
from taking the flag; then Stuart managing to take the flag anyway
next turn, pushing Bob aside. Unfortunately, Bob and Stuart were on
the same team, at least theoretically… Alternatively, the high drama
was at the other end, where Stuart and Bob had left the defence of
their own flagbase in the capable hands of FelixK and DaveB - who
were nevertheless overrun by AndrewM and NeilP.
The big news is that StuartF is finally dislodged from topspot down to
second, with TomasP now topping the league.

Every game of Team RoboRally seems to have a different "shape" to it.
This one was no different, ie. it was different again.

Game 14 of 30 November 2008 (sorry I've left it 2 weeks to report –
and there's a later game I'll report on when this one and the
consequent league table has sunk in, and when I have time.)

As usual (for the uninitiated) the teams/sides are chosen according
to current positions in the league table. So, given the 6 present:

It was therefore 1st, 9th and 11th in the league, versus 3rd, 4th and
10th.

Bad guys: StuartF, AndrewM, KeithD.
Good guys: JosepA, TomasP, BobR.

The bad guys spent about 10 seconds on team strategy, and decided to
keep it simple: all 3 of them would go get our flag; not for them
any of that defeatism of bothering to detail one or two of them to
defend their own base or go defend the middle flag that you win at.

We good guys (I always call the team I'm in the good guys) panicked.
Not because all 3 of the enemy were hurtling towards us … but because
Stuart was hurtling towards us. He nearly always succeeds in getting
his flag. OK, our team needed to allocate about seven of us to
stopping Stuart's march on our flag … unfortunately there were only 3
of us. We settled for 2 of us drones hanging back, while Captain
Josep went for THEIR flag on the off-chance that we other two might
slow Stuart just enough …

It kind of worked. Tomas and Bob hung back to try to fight off all
of Stuart, Andrew and Keith. Mainly Stuart. In fact, Tomas and Bob
got in each other's way and shot each other more than they shot any
enemies … but it meant that Stuart had to go round them, to avoid
being caught in the crossfire of team-mates Tomas and Bob shooting
each other, slowing him just enough as he wheeled past us laughing.

Tomas and Bob, mainly shooting each other, thus cleverly produced a
kill-zone that Stuart had to avoid, (hey, strategy is post hoc in
Team RR!). We also stopped Keith and Andrew; we achieved this
mainly by relying on them having bad cards that would slow them down.

By the time that all 3 bad guys reached our flag base (Keith taking
our flag), Tomas and Bob had positioned themselves between there and
the middle flagbase, full in the path of their route to victory at
the middle flagbase. Again, we were more likely to shoot each other
than any enemy, but it served to make them have to go round us in
case they were caught in the crossfire between team-mates …

OK, Tomas and Bob's defence was somewhere between paltry and useless,
but it distracted the enemy. Meanwhile, our Captain Josep ran for
THEIR flag, got it, undefended, and returned it to the middle flag-
base unopposed. Victory for Josep/Tomas/Bob. If there's ever such a
thing as strategy in Team RR, this showed a key strategic principle:
If you ALL go for the enemy flag, you give one player on the opposing
team an unopposed ride …

So Josep won for the good guys, and carried Tomas and Bob to some
victory points. Hey, it's not what you do, it's who carries you to
team victory! As I always say about Team RR, it's 90% skill and 90%
luck.

So, result of Game 14 of 30 November 2008:

StuartF Lost, survived 1 pt
AndrewM Lost, survived, MVP 2 pts
KeithD Lost, survived, carried flag 2 pts

JosepA Won, survived, planted flag 6 pts
TomasP Won, survived, MVP 6 pts
BobR Won, survived 5 pts

1) StuartF………44……….…10………4.300………...4.000 - still top

26) RobertF………....0………….1………..NA…………0.000

SO, StuartF is STILL top, though the gap narrows, with TomasP moving
into 2nd, the previous 2nd Martial being overtaken by Tomas and
Josep. It's nicely volatile … one good win …

Hi Dave,

you might be right!

P.S.: I was like that before... I'm afraid that IS 'normal' for me.
Only for certain values of 'normal', of course.

  Hi Alan,

the number system on the fly...: You reduced the angle!

Well, as we all know: 9*6 = 42, right?

If you think of a scalar product, this is actually possible:
Let's say, you have a scalar product of two vectors A=9 and B=6 with
the lengths of a=9 and b=6.
Then the scalar product would be
A*B = a*b*cos(alpha)
where alpha = angle between A and B.
As we define A*B = 42, this means that the 'Douglas Adams world
answer angle' would be
alpha = arccos(A*B/a*b) = arccos(42/54) = 38.94244 Degrees
If we now say that the year before the equation is (completely
arbitrarily, of course)
9*6 = 41
then the angle would be
arccos(41/54) =
40.60106 degrees
Therefore you reduced your angle by more than one degree!
qed

cheers

Felix

A*B = a*b*cos(alpha)
where alpha = angle between A and B.
As we define A*B = 42, this means that the 'Douglas Adams world
answer angle' would be
alpha = arccos(A*B/a*b) = arccos(42/54) = 38.94244 Degrees
If we now say that the year before the equation is (completely
arbitrarily, of course)
9*6 = 41
then the angle would be
arccos(41/54) =
40.60106 degrees
Therefore you reduced your angle by more than one degree!

Yes, that is of course the answer.

As a silver lining, my age is now the same as the answer to Life, the Universe and Everything :-)

Thanks for replying!

Erm, maybe you're using the sextidecimal (16-imal) system? So that 41
became 29? So now you've just become twenty-ten rather than thirty?
No?

On Wednesday this week, I could truthfully claim to be 29 years old.
Friends would sometimes look a little dubiously at me at this, but I
was mostly able to convince people of the truth of it.

Alas, on Thursday the 11th, things changed. I am not now 30 as you
might have expected - I am in fact 42. Gone are the sweet twenties,
and the mid-forties with all that entails (beer belly, midlife crisis,
stomach ulcer, not enough time for boardgames and teenage kids) loom.

How can this all have happened to me, so quickly?

Any takers?

Great fun.

How about Bang!-Cluedo. A fairly easy game. You all shoot each
other and then have to deduce who shot who, with only the evidence of
seeing it happen to go on.

Slightly harder: Cluedo-Bang! You have to deduce who shot who, and
THEN do the shooting.

How about "Team Robo-Tycoon". An amalgamation of Team RoboRally & Railroad Tycoon. Run your routes in Railroad Tycoon but the actual route has to be pre-programmed. Any trains ending up on the same track fire lasers at each other. Any wrecked trains have a scrap value if they can be successfully delivered to a city with a demand for that type of robot - oops, I meant train, of course.

I like Tomas' Warrior Kings idea. How about we have a competition for the funniest amalgamated game idea.
How about Struggle of Warrior Things? The game is played on a randomised hex board and all other components are put into a bag. Players take turns picking things out in the hope they will actually be useful.
