I am an educational psychologist from Perú. Although I am concerned about
development and cognition and I have much interest in science education, I have
not a science background beyond from what I have learned in school 10 years ago.
I have worked for 3 years with the canadian franchise Mad Science in Perú, with
children within 2.6 and 12 years old; and although I think the program lacks the
educational structure necesary (in theory) to make it possible for the children
to assimilate and construct the science concepts taught; it works motivating
students and encourages them to explore and build these concepts, which in a
constructivist perspective is great . As you have possibly noticed in your daily
work, emotion and cognition are an unseparate unit, and it is imposible to
ignore this in the teaching-learning environment, and this is what makes the Mad
Science Program so attractive to children.
Now I have switched my work, the Catholic University of Perú have asked me to
coordinate a program for the accreditation of the engineering programs and to
review the existing models. Accreditation and Quality in Education is a new
topic in Perú, and I am concerned because I have found much attention is put in
the management of the program, infraestructure and the quality of the professors
(in terms of degrees), even the work competencies students must acquire in order
to satisfy the market needs; but the focus on the actual learning process have
been lost.
Is the assesment of quality in the schools in your countries, taking into
account the developmental processes and stages a children undergoes, the level
of integration the structure of the curriculum has (science can be used as a
pivot to articulate the whole curriculum), the abilities teachers and the
educational system must have to promote an adequate construction of a
science-thinking-structure in children?

The journal is published twice a year in March and October
Journal of Baltic Science Education (JBSE) publishes original
scientific research articles in the field of Science Education and
related areas for all educational levels in the Baltic countries. It
is possible to publish special (thematic) issues of JBSE. The papers
should be submitted and will be published in English. JBSE will
promote to establish contacts between researchers and practical
educators both in the Baltic countries and countries around.
A scientific journal JBSE issued by the SMC Scientia Educologica,
Lithuania, emphasizes theoretical, experimental and methodical
studies in the field of science education. JBSE is an international
academic journal.
As a publication that represents a variety of cross-disciplinary
interests, both theoretical and practical, the JBSE invites
manuscripts on a wide range of topics, especially in the following
areas:
1. Didactics of natural science.
2. Theory and practice in natural science teacher education.
3. Integrated natural science education.
4. Natural science and technological literacy.
5. General and professional natural science education.
6. Philosophical, political, economical and social aspects of natural
science education.
7. The supplementary natural science education.
8. The standardisation of natural science education etc.
