Yes you are right. 'A level' is short for General Certificate of Secondary
Education Advanced Level ( GCE A level). These are taken by 18 year old
students in England (and I guess Wales but not Scotland who have their own
system). They are subject based and students typically need three A levels at
appropriate grades to go on University.

I hope you will excuse the question, but I don't think I know what 'A
level' means, is it advanced level at the high school? of course I
