Force and circular motion   Message List

I have used parts of the FCI to investigate high school students'
understanding of force and momentum. I have modified the FCI approach
by asking students to draw a path for the resulting motion of an
object instead of giving multiple choices so as not to encourage
potential answers by the choices given.

------------------ The End of F. Espinoza's message --------------
F. Espinoza's idea of asking students to draw a path for the
resulting motion of an object, instead of giving multiple choices,
is a very good idea. I tried the same on 16 January 1993, here in
Pune, MH, India in a sympo. on physics education.

I gave the question, on circular motion, taken from the 7th edition
of PSSC Physics, authors: Uri Haber-Schaim and others,
publisher: Kendall-Hunt Publishing Co., Iowa, US, p. 71, question:
25. It is as follows: What is the effect on the speed and direction
of motion of a body, when a force acts on it in a direction perpen-
dicular to its path.

As per my expectation, some young college teachers drew anticlockwise
path and some drew clockwise path.

I suggest F. Espinoza and others to try this question and let me
know responses of students. I prefer to discuss with interested list-
members, directly, why I expected anticlockwise and clockwise paths.
