Learning processes and parallel conceptions - learning about the
particulate nature of matter
Alejandra GarcÏa-Franco
Faculty of Education, National University of Mexico
Monday June 12th 2006
New Faculty Building, Room 2S7
Seminar: 13.00
Refreshments available in the room: 12.46
Alejandra is involved in science teaching in Mexico, where she is
working for her doctorate. She is exploring secondary studentsí
understanding of phenomena in terms of particle models. Alejandra
visited the Faculty in 2005 and interviewed students in a number of
local partner schools. During this seminar she will talk about her
findings from the Cambridge interviews, and how we might make sense
of the ways in which students use (or do not use!) particle models to
explain basic processes such as mixing, change of state, chemical
reactions etc.
