Classic Rock Renaissance
Last Friday (22nd April) I was at the Garage in Highbury with a
bunch of uni friends who has convinced me to go and see The
Glitterati/Hurricane Party/TheBlackVelvets show. I've always been
more of an emo/stoner/new rock type of gal and I had heard that
these bands were much more of your 'Dad Rock' type.
Turning up I was pretty indifferent about the whole experience. The
venue itself isn't exactly the best neither for sound or atmosphere
(I've seen a few unsigned bands there before), and I'm not a fan of
the area itself (Chelsea fan). I have to say that all three bands
made me do a complete U-turn on the way I viewed this genre. I had
thought that they were just riding on the coat-tails of the Darkness
but I was pleasantly surprised.
The Black Velvets were probably the weakest band on the night. Both
their sound and image feel short of the other two bands. They still
put in a decent enough performance for me to keep an eye on them
though I feel that interest will wane in a very similar way to the
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club...
...if they ever achieve that level of success.
The Hurricane Party were fantastic. A combination of AC/DC, Led Zep
and UFO they had the image, tunes and stage presence of a blossoming
rock super act. I still can't get the song "Roadstar" out of my
head. Can't wait to see them again.
The Glitterati for me were the best band on the night. Blatantly
paying dues to Guns 'N' Roses and Motley Crue. Sleazy, scabby and
down right dirty. I'm a nice girl but I wanted to get down on my
hands and knees and give em a good...
...well er anyway. They rocked. Big time.
On reflection I can see this whole scene exploding. Not only will it
attract the young and fertile (like me) but also the aging rockers
of a by-gone era who wish to relinquish their youth. On leaving the
venue I was handed flyers from another band who are obviously keen
to break into the scene. They were quite cute too. RED STAR REBELS,
I've been on their website and they look like they could even be a
match for the Glitterati!
Anyway, I decided to see how these guys party and tried to get into
the after show. Failed. Tried to get in round the back. Spoke to one
of the roadies. Failed.
Conclusion:
Do yourself a favour and cotton on to this scene before it explodes!
