Many thanks and congratulations to all at the South London Swimming Club for the immense amount of hard work and preparation that went into the 2008 World Winter Swimming Championships held this weekend (8th - 10th Feb) at the Tooting Bec Lido.
Over 600 swimmers took part and after the all the relays, races and endurance events were finished there was a Fun presentation in teams completely of the team's own choosing:
Swan Lake danced by three men in tutus will give you an idea of how things went, but the prize of £600 was won by a dramatic rendering of a Leap Year proposal where 7 or 8 women circled round a lone male swimmer in order to court him; after one lady had won a successful "Yes!" the others then became the wedding attendants placing on her head a swimming cap with a small bridal veil attached. (No mean feat in water at a temp of 6 degrees centigrade)
(I have great admiration for all who took part - had a small dip at the end and managed about 20 seconds.)
A wonderful event all round. In addition to the swimming there were stalls for Speedo, Swimtrek, the OSS etc and talks by Janet Smith, Lewis Gordon Pugh and others.
