The Outdoor Pool at Addlestone Leisure Centre, Surrey, will not be open this
summer, while new funding sources are being sought.

Here's some familiar reading from Runnymede Borough Council committee
minutes:
"The Committee considered the future of the swimming pool at Addlestone
Leisure Centre, a shared facility with Jubilee High School. The pool was
used during the Summer and Autumn Terms by the Council and the school, and
for public swimming from May to August.
The terms of its usage were that Addlestone Leisure Centre was recharged
63.5% of the pool's total running costs on an annual basis. The school bore
the costs of pool maintenance, and all chemicals used to clean the water.
The Leisure Centre Manager ensured that sufficient numbers of trained
lifeguards were on duty, the changing rooms and pool areas were kept clean
and that regular water tests were carried out.
Members were advised that the condition of the swimming pool and associated
equipment and surrounds had deteriorated since installation over 30 years
ago [built 1977] by the former Abbeylands School. Managing and maintaining
the pool was time consuming and costly, and usage of the pool had dropped
with the cooler summers making other facilities in the area more attractive.
The School Governors and Leisure Officers had come to the conclusion that
unless major investment took place (in the region of £750,000 - £1.5
million), it would be better to close the pool, initially for 12 months
while suitable contractors and funding could be sourced for refurbishment
and upgrading. This was formally agreed at a meeting of the Addlestone
Leisure Centre Joint Management Committee in October 2007, giving rise to
the recommendations being considered by this Committee."
