North Somerset Council is to recommend closing the Portishead Open Air Swimming Pool claiming it is too expensive to run: costs to the local taxpayer will amount to more than £130,000 over the course of the 2008 season which runs from 24 May to the 28th September, according to this BBC News report.
This is for approximately 8,000 visitors this year.
The Council are claiming that each swimmer costs almost £17 a swim, money they claim could be better spent elsewhere (presumably on consultants who charge approximately £1000 a day)
The Executive will meet on 28th October 2008
Meanwhile........Carmarthenshire Council want to start filling in the Hendy Lido on October 27th and the two open air pools in Beccles and Halesworth are also to be closed unless the community takes them over.
