[This is similar to another pool nearby in Cambridgeshire, attached to a village college. They used a Landfill Tax Credits Scheme to raise enough for heating repairs & a relining of their pool to keep it open - Oliver]

POOL REPAIRS PROVE JUST TOO EXPENSIVE
A popular outdoor swimming pool which has been at the heart of the Theale village community for more than 20 years is doomed because of spiralling repair costs.
Theale Green Community School pool was forced to close 18 months ago after its boiler broke down.
A £200,000 estimate for repairs – a price nobody is willing to fund – means the pool will have to close its doors to swimmers for good.
At a meeting of West Berkshire Council’s eastern area forum last week, head of culture and youth services David Appleton said meeting the massive repair bill could not be justified.
Afterwards Mr Appleton said:
“This pool is just past its use-by date. It’s old and it’s not that big and the amount of money needed to bring it back into use is quite considerable. Further plans are being made to build a leisure centre within the campus at Denefield School in Tilehurst and a provision is being made for this in 2007-2008. The ultimate decision on these plans will be made by members of the eastern area forum."

It isn't a great pool architecturally, but it's now another facility lost.
Thanks for your great website. I remember swimming in the Tinside Lido at Plymouth when I visited my grandparents in the 1950s(!) and I'm pleased it's re-opened. It was heart-breaking to see it derelict a few years ago.
