I've only just found out about the Glycolipids discussion / mini-
symposium which is taking place in London, UK this Wednesday and
Thursday at the Royal Society.

Registration at this two-day event is free and the organiser has
asked me to forward this to you (I appreciate that most people don't
live in London !)

Click 'Discussion Meetings' then 'October'.

You are invited to note the following (and please do pass on to any
who may be interested):

What? Glycolipids in cell biology and medicine

When? 16/17 October 2002

Where? At the Royal Society, London

Cost? Free to all, but registration required

How? Register on-line at www.royalsoc.ac.uk/events

Organised by Dr Terry Butters, Professor Timothy Cox, Professor
Raymond Dwek FRS and Dr Fran Platt

Meeting Summary: Glycolipids are key cellular components and
inherited defects in their metabolism cause disabling disease. Novel
therapies, based on an understanding of cellular biochemistry, have
advanced to clinical trials. Aspects of basic and applied glycolipids
science will be discussed. A copy of the programme is attached.

Poster Session

Posters are invited for this Discussion Meeting they will be
displayed from Wednesday morning until Thursday afternoon and a
session on Wednesday (5pm - 7pm) has been reserved for informal
discussion with the presenters.

abstracts should be submitted by 31 August 2002 and sent to Lynda
Butters, Glycobiology Institute, Department of Biochemistry, South
Parks Road, Oxford OX1 3QU for consideration. Although the deadline
has passed if a submission is sent to me within the next week we can
still accept them.

Essay Competition

The Glycobiology Institute at the Department of Biochemistry,
University of Oxford are holding an Essay Competition to coincide

Medicine' on 16/17 October 2002.

Graduate students to compose an essay, not exceeding 4000 words,
excluding tables, figures and references, on any subject related

The winner will be funded in full to attend the Royal Society meeting
in London where the prize of £1500 will be awarded.

All entrants should submit 3 copies of their essay to Lynda Butters,
Glycobiology Institute, Department of Biochemistry, South Parks Road,
