Hi Lucy
Sorry, Weston is a bit far for me, but I do have some suggestions:
1) No lunch - you've got enough to do as it is, and it can be difficult catering
for
everyone's tastes. Snacks and drinks are adequate, as most folk are happy to
organise
their own grub.
2) Don't feel to have to fit in classes for everything - better by far to decide
on a
relatively limited schedule for a first go (actually, it is definitely the best
idea to decide
on your schedule BEFORE anything else!). Also, try to recruit some knowledgeable
(and well-known) judges - good, respected judges make all the difference when
people are deciding whether to come or not. Offer them a reduced entry fee if
they
want to show in a different division to the one they are judging, or give them
something towards their fuel costs as an incentive!
3) Rope in members of your family to act as ring stewards (pref. one per ring)
to make
sure the show keeps moving and people don't miss their class
4) Don't run performance classes alongside each other - entrants may have the
same
horse in both classes!
5) Make sure your stewards and judges have badges or similar identification so
everyone knows who they are
6) Limit entries per person per class, or you will have mayhem
7) Make sure you have enough big tables - performance showers in particular need
LOTS of space. Ask entrants how many models they're bringing/what size table
they
require
8) Don't think you have to award ribbons down to 10th in every class. Most
people
prefer low entry fees and modest awards for classes with just nice rosettes for
the
champs to high entry fees and lavish awards. Useful prizes (eg a bone china
horsey
mug) are more appreciated than actual trophies, many of which are plain ugly!
9) Don't judge the champs by popular vote - contrary to belief this is not a
fair system
and is a sure way to upset your entrants!
10) Stay calm whatever happens - AND ENJOY YOURSELF!
Hope that helps :)
