Re: [londonbirders] Re: summer migrants

Andrew,

I had a good count of Blackcap at Hyde Park/Kensington Gardens on April 16th (23 singing males) as well as 10 singing Willow Warblers.

I also had a male Common Redstart at Hyde Park on April 11th and Blue-headed Wagtail there on April 22nd.

As yet no flycatchers or Whinchat at these sites and yet hoping for Ring Ouzel but have nevertheless personally had a good Inner London spring so far with the above, as well as finding Garganey, Red Kite and Common Buzzard within a mile of Marble Arch.

Next few days don't look particularly promising though with winds turning around to a Northerly quarter ... still, here's hoping.

Des.

Just thought I'd ask how people think this spring compares to others.

At Brent Res we had a few really early migrants in March then virtually nothing until the recent bank holiday weekend.
We do an annual Spring Birdcount, this year's was on 30th April and we got some impressive warbler counts, 39 singing Blackcaps (previous record was 29!), and 16 Sedge Warblers. Lesser Whitethroats just arrived with four males. However, still no Garden Warbler yet.
While everywhere else seemed to get Ring Ouzel they've given us a wide berth and we've had no Redstart either and just one Whinchat.
And has anyone had a sniff of a Flycatcher yet?
The only one in the whole of London I've heard about is a Pied in Croydon on 11th.

Not been online for a while due to a very iffy computer ... not had a bad spring here so far in Inner London and made the following personal finds :

Wigeon > a pair high SW over Hyde Park on April 26th (thought to have been wild due to height as opposed to the pair from St. James' Park).
Garganey > 1 very wary male at Kensington Gardens on April 27th was the first for Inner London for ten years and the first site record since 1968 ~ it spent the day feeding at the edge of a small reedbed and being beaten up by the resident Coots.
Scaup > 1 male at Hyde Park from April 16th to present.
Goldeneye > 1 male at Hyde Park/Kensington Gardens from April 16th to present.
Red Kite > 1 high over Queensway W2 drifted slowly North at 11.22hrs on April 21st.
Common Buzzard > 1 drifted North over Paddington Green at 18.15hrs on May 1st.
Common Sandpiper > 1 at Kensington Gardens on April 27th and one at Hyde Park on April 30th.
Common Tern > 1 at Hyde Park on April 22nd and 2 there on May 2nd.
'Blue-headed' Wagtail > 1 at Hyde Park on April 22nd.
Common Redstart > male at Hyde Park on April 11th.
Wheatear > total of 5 at Hyde Park between April 19th and 30th and two on rooftop gardens on Rossmore Road NW1 on April 30th.
Garden Warbler > 1 at Kensington Gardens on April 22nd.
Blackcap > 23 singing males at Hyde Park/Kensington Gardens on April 16th was a good site count.
Reed Bunting > 2 at Hyde Park/Kensington Gardens on May 2nd included a singing male.

Also went to see Dave Johnson's cracking singing Wood Warbler at Regent's Park on April 30th (still seemingly London's most reliable spring locale).

Let's hope May is a good one........

Des McKenzie.

Hi there Chris

I haven't posted anything on your website purely coz I haven't been out birding recently due to a lack of free time.

Be assured that as soon as I do, anything I see of note will be sent to you pronto!!!

PS Good luck with the birding and with the new post of East London Recorder. P
