Why does no-one approve of me checking my email when I'm on holiday?! It's all part of the adventure that is Lundy - finding places where there's enough of a GPRS signal to connect one of my various gadgets to the internet - haven't tried the top of the Ugly, I must admit.
Talking of which, I noticed as we were sailing away that the flagpole on Hangman's Hill is missing again - has it blown over again?
I'm not sure whether I agree with you about the rhodie eradication - I'm definitely in two minds about it. The tunnels were indeed special, although the one on the way down to Quarry Beach was downright dangerous when it had been raining. And seeing the east coast alight with a blaze of colour in May is one of my Lundy highlights. Is it really going to adversely affect the deer if they're completely wiped out? If so, that's a enough of a reason in itself not to do it. I think it depends what they do with the land once they've got rid of the big bushes - I read in the OLC log that they're thinking of replacing them with deciduous trees, which would probably be very nice in a few decades time but will leave it rather bare and characterless for a while. I don't see why they can't leave at least some of the rhodies in place, just keep them under control a bit more. Anyway, I'd be interested to hear what
response the Lundy management give to your concerns.
I'm worried about the rabbits myself. I know they're a pest, and they munch away at grass and flowers indiscriminately, but it would be a real shame if they do all die out in the current myxo outbreak - for me they're part of the charm of the island. It seemed a lot bleaker when we were there this time, few seabirds at that time of year, deer hiding away from the hundreds of blasted DTs, sheep all penned up in the fields, and not a rabbit to be seen south of Brazen Ward. But I don't think I'll be starting up a "save the Lundy rabbits" campaign - Reg would refuse to serve me in the shop!
I liked staying in BVE, haven't stayed in BVW but I guess it's pretty much the same. My favourite (when with people) has to be Government House - that's so luxurious, and the kitchen is wonderful, as is the living room, as are the bedrooms and bathrooms, and that lovely long corridor with the slidy floor... of course my absolute favourite is OLC - that's MY home, where I'm happiest in the whole wide world. Actually, thinking about it, Square Cottage is pretty good too, as is Old House South, as is The Quarters (now)... and we did have a fun time in The Barn when I stayed there with 4 other adults and 7 kids! not a lot of rest or sleep though.
Haven't quite managed to refocus and get back to work yet. I don't think I'm built for the pace of life as a mother and a manager of a team of nerds (surprisingly similar roles) in so-called reality. One day, when the kids leave home, I'll chuck it all in, sell my house, and get a job on Lundy... I'll do anything... must learn how to build dry-stone walls...
Don't forget to write the url of the yahoo group in any log books you can get hold of! The kids and I did a very colourful notice in the Square Cottage log, which will hopefully garner us some new list members.
anyway, work calls

Thank you for the welcome, Pip. Have just read your journal and
started to get excited about my imminent visit. I discovered Threequarter
Wall Bay a few years ago - it really is a super spot and well out of
the way of other vistors, especially DTs. Not sure I approve of you
checking your email there though! Surely you have to stand on one leg
on the roof of the Ugly in a south-easterly to get a signal? :-)
Some people, myself included, are really quite concerned about the
complete eradication of the rhodies. The charm of the tunnels was one
of the attractions of an east side walk. And what about the bird cover
and refuge for Sika deer? I was at the LFS Committee meeting yesterday
and it was agreed that it would raised at the next Lundy management
meeting.
Three weeks tomorrow I shall be setting out for my trip along with 15
friends. I'm staying in BVW for the first time and everyone else is
spread out amongst Hanmers, Square, Radio Shack, OLL. Need to book
something else before the trip after that which isn't until December
2007! I'm planning an island take over for a significant birthday...!
Better refocus and get back to work.
Best wishes,
Michael Williams
