I recall that early distributors had a problem of failing igniters (the
power transistor installed within it to amplify the spark signal).
This is a possible cause of your problem. If it is the problem, you
can expect it to fail completely in a short while.
The bad news is that Mazda do not supply replacement transistors, so
you have to buy a complete distributor, which is very costly. The good
news is that it is not difficult for a competent electronics repairman
to replace the part. You may find a "rebuilding" service available.
