Hi Dale,
One thing this could be is a small slit or tear in the corrugated
rubber hose between the air measurement valve (the VAF) and the
throttle body. If that is the case, the tear can open slightly as the
engine rocks over when you apply power. This lets unmeasured air in,
and weakens the mixture, so the torque reduces, so the tear closes, so
the mixture gets richer and the torque increases.......
It so happens that I have a brand new one in my cupboard, which I
bought in case I got the problem, but I sold the car without needing
it, and forgot the part. If you need one, it's quite expensive from
Mazda (£55-60?), but I'll let you have mine for £30 including postage.
