Muck in the Front Fenders (wings)   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #167 of 1205 |
A few days ago, with the door open, I happened to look in the gap
below the "doorpost", behind the front wheel well. If this sounds
mysterious, look in the photo album "Muck in Front Fenders".

I could see the most amazing amount of soil and rotted vegetation,
and got quite worried about what might have happened to the steel
beneath. I got a plastic rod (didn't want to scratch the paint) and
loosened it, then sucked out what I could with a vacuum cleaner and
long nozzle. But I couldn't reach it all, so I had to remove the
front mudflap, and release the rear edge of the wheel well liner. I
then could get at the rest, and there was probably twice as much left
as I had originally got out. It had completely covered the drain
hole in the area, and this takes the water caught by the "well" in
front of the windscreen.

To my relief, the paint coat was intact and no rust had started. I
strongly recommend everyone to have a look. The pile of muck in my
last photo is about two thirds of what I got out of both sides.
