I have the workshop manual for the V6 and wanted to share it but the
upload only allows 512kb or so and the zip file 37mb big. Any
suggestions on how I could share it with you guys.

had the same problem.it was my distributer. DAR

ianlinden_uk <no_reply@...> wrote: Vince,

I recall that early distributors had a problem of failing igniters (the
power transistor installed within it to amplify the spark signal).
This is a possible cause of your problem. If it is the problem, you
can expect it to fail completely in a short while.

The bad news is that Mazda do not supply replacement transistors, so
you have to buy a complete distributor, which is very costly. The good
news is that it is not difficult for a competent electronics repairman
to replace the part. You may find a "rebuilding" service available.

You could make it a torrent, and then let everyone know about it. They
would all have to install Azureus (or another torrent client).

Cheers Ian, dont know why i thought they had changed
maybe just an assumption cos all 5 of my civics
(95-01) were the "right" way round. I would soon get
used to it if I was just driving the mx-3 but the
civic is my main car and the mazda my weekend toy.
Good idea about the lowered seat. One to ponder in
the future maybe but as i wont be doing a lot of
miles in it ill probabaly end up living with it.
Cheers Ian

It has approx 120k on the clock but still uns smooth

Hello,

I've just bought myself a MX-3 1.8 V6, which i'm completely in love
with. She's a '97 model and has nearly 90k on the clock so i'm
thinking she'll need some tlc. How much should I pay for a service for
her (so that im not ripped off, im still pretty naive when it comes to
costing)?

Also, she's pretty smoky when I first start her up in the morning
(she's garaged at night) is this a problem often seen in this model or
do i need a new cam head gasket or something? Any help you guys can
give will be much appreciated, I thought it was best to ask people who
had real experience of this car rather than a trial and error process.

Many Thanks,

Lanu

p.s can anybody recommend a good garage in Berkshire/Surrey?

I think you will need to budget about £300 for the work you need
done. Unless you have documented evidence that the cambelt has been
changed within five years/60,000 miles, you should have it done - if
it breaks the resulting damage to the engine could be more than the
car is worth. The smokiness in the morning is probably worn valve
guides and/or valve stem seals, which requires the cylinder heads to
be removed.

Hello,

Thank you very much for the advice on servicing prices. Ive yet to put
her in (need to scrape together the funds still). I was wondering if
anyone knew why the car now does kangaroo hops in 1st and 2nd gear? It
moves forward in jerks that only stop if I accelerate hard, put the
clutch half down, or shift up into 3rd. This has happened ever since I
got the car with 1st gear (I assumed it was my heavy footed driving,
and at least this problem has vindicated me of that particular mantle)
but has now spread to 2nd and 3rd is getting a bit iffy too. I'd take
her to a garage but no-one near me can fit her in for a week. Any
advice on what the problem is would be much appreciated.

cheers,

Lanu

My thoughts on this one are either that the clutch surface has
deteriorated and is "grabbing" (I'm not sure this is actually likely),
or that there is a problem with one or more engine mounts.

Thinking further, whichever it is (and my money is on the engine
mounts), it will be an engine-out job to fix, which is the ideal time
to do the cambelt (and the valves for that matter), as the access will
be much easier.

I used to take mine to JEM in Hendon. Reasonable rates and felt like
they knew what they were doing. They used top spot things Mazda had
missed.
Also used to get a V8 soarer as a loan car lol

I say used to as I sold my MX-3 and bought an alfa gtv. Its half the
age of my mazda and has only 30k miles on it but its falling apart. it
isnt as fast and doesnt handle as well but on the upside I dont look
like a chav any more :-)

Best spec. possible please.
Low miles gets good money.
I have been there seen it and done it :)
I have two Toyota Celica GT4's
One has to go!
Check me out on either GT4OC or GT4EC.
I have a 200 bhp limited edition 1992 CS (in Teal) with 173k on the
clock but fully maintained by enthusiast or a UK 205 WRC 1994 also
fully maintained with 153k on the clock (running 250 bhp)in red.
Don't let the GT4 clubs know but I need one 'sensible' car and I reckon
the MX3 ar 123 bhp and 30 mpg? suits me better than my 22mpg guzzlers??/

Hi, Keith here.

Bought a V6 last week. One of those impetuous moves that happens
before you've had time to think about it. Not wanting to admit to too
much dysfunctionality... but I was looking for a van.
Don't work & live on incapacity benefit so this should be fun.

Car's beautiful, I'm already in love. (At least this one won't run
off & rip my life up)

Advice???

Is there a list of common probs that could save me time & poss money.
I get ptetty high revs (1500)starting cold, & they stay up for
perhaps 3 full minutes. Is that common?

Engine purrs but has got tapping. I've read a few articles that
present this as common & usually ignored. Any thoughts???

This car's clean, near immaculate except for a few stone chips.
97,000 FSH. Cam belt done 20.000 miles ago.
Should I be spending or just enjoying???
Thanks
Keith

Hi Keith,

I no longer have my MX-3, but I have fond memories. It's a fine car
and you should have lots of enjoyment.

The high revs starting from cold are normal and intended to reduce
wear on a cold engine - this is common with fuel-injected vehicles.
It works, too. I have heard of K-series engines stripped down after
80,000 miles or more which still had the honing pattern on the
cylinder bores (i.e. no detectable wear).

The ticking can either be a sticky hydraulic tappet or the
anti-backlash gadget in the camshaft drive. The tappet can often be
freed by an oil and filter change and a few hundred miles - the best
is fully synthetic 5W30. That worked for me.

The anti-backlash gadget is a big strip-down job to replace a small
component, and there is no harm in leaving it if you can put up with
the tick.

Thanks Ian. I feel a little easier about my madness now. Do you know
if there's a Haynes manual or similar for these? & what's the best
way to source spares, exhausts & brakes etc.
Cheers
Keith
