Hi folks, anyone any pointers as to what is causing this? A couple of
days ago the idle speed started fluctuating between 750 and 400 rpm,
now cutting out all together! want to see if I can fix it myself
before having to part with my drinking vouchers. Any help would be
appreciated... Cheers

One possibility is a vacuum leak, whereby unmetered air gets to the
throttle body - the mixture is too weak and you know the rest. Look
very carefully at the corrugated rubber hose (about 2" diameter)
between the airbox and the throttle body. If there is any crack
(even the slightest) it could be the cause. You can tape it up as a
temporary measure, but a new one is over £60.

It just happens that I have a new one I am thinking of selling on
EBay.

But it could be something else - the "igniter" transistor in the
distributor is a weakness, usually in pre '94 cars.

Hi. Cant help with the seat unfortunately. Top speed seems to vary on
1.8 from 120mph to anything up to indicated 135mph depending on any
tweaks on the engine.
Fuel consumption is rubbish. I've got a 2.8 litre BMW and its only a
little bit better than this . I normally get 185miles from a tank max
210 if i drive more carefully. I am sure you can get better than this
if you drive more frugally but to be honest I love the noise it makes
and I rag mine around quite a bit. Therefore I reckon consumption to
be around 25-30 mpg

Sorry did not get back to you sooner. Thanks for the info. I took the car from
Scotland to Sunderland last weekend, average speed 65/70 it returned 30 mpg.
There is one way to get better fuel return, use only 1st and 5th forget the
rest, only thing it isn't much fun.

Hi,
I have rescued a Autozam az3 (1991)from the scrap yard this week.
For £100.00 which is running fine and I have spent the last 2 days
waxing to restore the colour of the panels back to a gleaming Red.I
have yet to put it through an M.O.T. are there any standard faults
that the
AZ3 and MX3 suffer with that may cause the vehicle to fail??

And most importantly is it ok for me to be here having the AZ3 instead
of the MX3?

Big hi to everyone either way!

Hi cap'n,

Course it's ok, all Autozam's welcome, and well done for the rescue!

Standard faults are few and far between - the cars are very reliable,
but you can expect isolated problems at that age. I would say the most
likely are the igniter in the distributor (was fixed in the '94 models)
and cracking of the corrugated air pipe between the airbox and the
throttle body, but, having said that, you may experience neither.

A good learning resource is the bulletin board at www.mx-3.com.
Searching will tell you just about everything there is to know about
these cars - only ask once you've searched, because most questions have
been answered over and over again :-)

I bought my MX3 a year ago, and it's been a joy, but it feels as if it's slowly
losing it's power,
and I mean as in over the last 6 months or so.

I'm beginning to notice that at the lights, I'm no longer the first guy to pull
away, I put my
foot down, it takes about 10 seconds to get past 30 miles an hour, unless I
floor it, and if I
do that , my petrol gets drunk. I'm pretty sure that there might be a lot of
issues with my car,
and I'd like to get her in top shape before summer really gets here.

Basically, it's a 1.6 engine, K reg, automatic. I get about 35/40 miles on ten
pounds of petrol,
which when i did the maths, is about 16/18 miles per gallon, which sounds REALLY
bad to
me. I even use optimax all the time.

The acceleration no longer gives me whiplash, a feeling i miss, and as it
changes up through
the gears, you can feel the slight pause.

any pointers, as to what I need to do to sort this out, will be much
appreciated! Thanks guys!

I don't think you need a specialist - any competent garage should be
able to sort out a 1.6 Mazda engine. The sort of things which need
checking are:

Compression - to check that the valves are seating correctly and the
rings are sealing the bores.

Ignition - are the plugs in good condition, and is the spark good?

Air - is the air filter choked?

Fuel mixture - are there any vacuum leaks?

None of this is rocket science. But you do need a garage you can
trust.

could be the relay but where is it located exactly, can any one tell

that it can only be a broken wire and before anyone says it, yes I did

Picking up my new mx3 V6 on tuesday - can't wait!!
It has an LPG conversion - anybody else heard of one on these?
Did have an MR2 - but my one year old lad has forced sale.. ;-)
Anything I should be keeping an eye on engine-wise ? or are they
pretty reliable as most people have said?
Cheers for now and speak soon

Nice to know there is an LPG available.
Do you know how much this cost?
The engine is sound.
Only problem I had was the power steering pump!

LPG conversion isnt a bad idea cos fuel tank is so small and fuel
consumption quite high for small car. where is the lpg tank? in the
boot? how big is it?
check the service history. need to make sure the cambelt change has
been done. needs to be every 5 years or 60k miles whichever comes
first. its an expensive job!
mine has been fine apart from that. i had recent service and had a
cracked belt for power steering and something else but that will just
be down to age as my car is a 93.
i also needed new switch for heated rear screen. it works but doesnt
light up! also last setting on air blower doesnt work so needs
replacing . front number plate holder is knackered altho this seems to
be a common problem. did read something on website today about
driveshaft problems but these should have been sorted on old cars?
have also read that original suspension can snap and then bursts the
front tyre. dont know if true or not.
anyway have fun. i love mine :-)

It's in the boot and takes up about 3/4 of the space!
Is the belt non - interferance? how much have you been quoted for a

in regards to non interference I have been told both things so you
knows. all i know is that i will make sure i wont miss the service
interval! I think it takes about 3-4 hours so depends on hourly rate.
at mazda its really expensive. I complained to them it costs me nearly
twice as much to service my little mazda as it does my 5 series bmw.
but thing is its an old car and i want to keep it running. there are
some specialists about like JEM in hendon, north london who specialise
in jap cars. think they quote about £250 but dont know if they are any
good. its all about piece of mind i guess

Re: 1992 MX-3 V6 Fuel Consumption;

I have a 1998 MX-3 1.6 which I regularly run on
Optimax. This week, I achieved 250 Miles from one tank
of fuel (actually from 40 Litres of Optimax) - yes, I
actally take records of fuel purchases, cross-index
them with distance travelled and enter it into a
program on a Computer and PDA.

I have noticed glaring discrepancies on occasion.
One fill up from a Petrol Station took me only 200
miles! There were NO mitigating factors.

This leads me to believe that some Petrol Stations -
OR fuel companies occasionally supply SUB-STANDARD
fuel to the fore-courts.

I have noticed this mostly at BP while using BP
Ultimate petrol.

One fill-up will make the engine run like its got
rocket-fuel in it. Engine is extra quiet, acceleration
is crisp, smooth, responsive.

The next fill-up, the car acts like its running on 2
star fuel from a Banana Republic. Dodgy acceleration,
snail like perfomance, noisy vibrating engine, and the
exhaust smells different too!!

Just personal observations.

I have got a lovely metallic black Mx3 1.6 P reg [ 1997 ] for sale. It's got
beautiful vinyl graphics on the sides and on the bumper, its lowered and with
gorgeous body kits. With 80 thousand mile on the clock. This is an absolute
stunner. If you love fast sport cars, then this is the car for you. I will
attach photographs in a couple of days. The price for the car is £2800 but I
will consider a near offer. Meaning that I will have to take my Hifi system off.
And man you need to hear music from this Hifi system. If you are interested call
