Dear Associates,

Sadly due to the loss of a number of key members the Mercia Society has now
closed down.

We therefore ask all members to support the Acting Witan of Mercia –

http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/mercia/

Our email will also now close with no further communication.

Good luck.

The writer of that article really is ignorant, is he not? He would restrict
Mercia to just the current West Midlands "region", and call the East Midlands,
Lindsey?

We need more time for it - as you probably know, getting a really good
conference organised involves a lengthy build-up develkoping the programme,
finding the right speakers and getting publicity underway. We want to do this
right. We've all got our other pressing commitments, and as it turned out, 31st
October was over-optimistic.

Federation?

Basically individuals and groups support of developing Mercia,

Just an idea.......

Since we're working towards the same goal of Mercian independence,
albeit rather differently, I thought I'd join this group and open some
dialogue on behalf of Sovereign Mercia - the website of which can now be
found at the new address of http://sovereignmercia.angelfire.com
<http://sovereignmercia.angelfire.com>

I'm happy to answer any questions here, and may indeed have some of my
own to ask. Alternatively, I'd like to invite anyone interested to join
our own Yahoo group, a link to which can be found at the bottom of the
aforementioned webpage.

Sincerely,
ApGriffith

The June 2008 issue of BBC History Magazine includes an article on
Beowulf. It's by Alex Burghart, who it's stated is writing a history of
Mercia,
which could be worth looking out for in due course.

The article also gives a link to Burghart's work on the Prosopography of
Anglo-Saxon England project - a database of known people from that period -

I'm pleased to see that our website www.independentmercia.org is No. 6
out of 338,000 on Google, i.e. on the Google front page, just ahead of
the West Mercia Constabulary. So we've made a lot of progress.

We've had just over 4000 hits in the first 6 months of this year,
including nearly 1000 in June.

The single source of most of these hits is the Google search (182
hits), then Wikipedia (72 hits), at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_active_autonomist_and_secessionist_movement\
s
though the source of the vast majority of hits, 3600 or so, could not
be identified. Another Wikipedia page was No. 10 of the top ten, with
15 hits,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_not_fully_sovereign_nations At
least it suggests there's a fair bit of interest in secessionist
movements.

Jeff pointed out to me, reference the link I sent to everyone last
week about Transition Towns, www.transitiontowns.org that our regional
approach, with its regional currency, could be quite congruent with
the Transition Towns when it came to them making connections further
afield e.g. on a regional basis. I think, as I said, that it could be
a very good way forward for us. For example, we could give talks to
them about how they could extend their reach towards other towns,
cities etc along the same lines as we're saying.

Hi folks,

I've been tinkering with the website to make it look a bit more
appealing. Take a look at www.independentmercia.org

However, as Jeff and I were discussing the other day, it really could
do with an artistic going-over, for which I don't have the skills.

Do we know of anyone who would take the website by the scruff of its
intellectual neck and put some heart and soul into it, as surely
exists beyond the intellectual? Okay, forget the metaphors.

Anyone?

On account of the present government's 'special relationship' with Bush's
blackguards in the States, we the British people, are being sabotaged both by a
permanent threat of terrorism at home and by financial thrombosis in the
marketplace of our capitalist kingdom.

Among many others, one key consequence is that currently we are being robbed at
the rate of £1.22 a litre for transport fuel - soon to rise to £1.25 a ltr. of
which 70% is purloined by the treasury.

The knock-on for businesses and consumers alike (i.e. most of us) are
self-evident - disroportionate increases in cost for food, drink, services,
transport, taxes and other scams resulting in economic stagnation combined with
rising inflation or 'stagflation'- which is to keep our noses to the grindstone
and our stress levels at peak.

So now is the time to organise and demonstrate that YOU the consumer will take
control of the situation.

For the rest of this year DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two biggest oil
companies (which now are one), ESSO and BP

If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their
prices.

If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. - and
keep the pressure up until the price drops to below 70p per litre

This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the 'don't buy petrol on a certain day' campaign
last May. The oil companies just laughed at that! - because they knew we
wouldn't continue to hurt ourselves by refusing to buy petrol. It was more of an
inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT, whoever thought of this
idea, has come up with a plan that can really work.

TO BE EFFECTIVE, WE NEED TO REACH MILLIONS OF ESSO AND BP FUEL CONSUMERS - BUT
REALLY, IT IS VERY SIMPLE.

Just forward this email, and buy your petrol at Shell, Asda,Tesco, Sainsburys,
Morrisons Jet etc.

I for one am sending this note to thirty people.

If each of you send It to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)... and those 300
send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... by the time the message
reaches the sixth generation of recipients, we will have reached over THREE
MILLION CONSUMERS. SO DO JOIN IN NOW!

Get that keyboard clicking and deliver this message before bedtime.

Who knows? You may even sleep better afterwards..

Now that our website at www.independentmercia.org is more or less
completed (the Citizens Registration form isn't working properly -
I'll get it fixed a.s.a.p), subject of course to adding ongoing news
and developments, and now that we're nearing the point of having an
impressive number of citizens in all the 20 shires of Mercia, it seems
like the right time to open up this discussion group by placing a link
on the website which hopefully will attract people here.

So, let's discuss!

The current issue includes four pages on the life and work of King Offa, two
pages on the dyke and the rest largely taken up by his dealings with
Charlemagne and the Church. He gets a rather bad press (the letters page is
open to
those who think this unfair) but all publicity for Mercia can be accounted good

Rather like the Wessaxens we have now added the area
of the South Saxons (Sussex) to www.wessex.me.uk- this
now means that there are 9 counties added. Our sister
site www.mercia.me.uk will shortly be adding
Herefordshire to Worcestershire. All stes will carry
the Anglo-Saxon theme. For the mercia site it is an
Offa you can't refuse.
We shall continue to endeavour to add contributions
from members of both the Wessex Society & wessex &
Mercia discussions. Thank you for all your assistance.
Over 1.7 million clicks so far this year.

Hello All,
I would like to introduce myself. I'm Michael Davey-
Editor of www.wessex.me.uk for the past year. We are
happy to launch our new site www.mercia.me.uk

The idea of both sites is to introduce the tourist and
visitor to the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms. We list the sites
and events by each county (as they were in 1974).
However the underlying theme is Anglo-Saxon Britain.
Any contributions (and corrections) by members of this
discussion group would be welcome. Further we are
looking for assistance in listing the local
attractions from locals! We have started on
Worcestershire.

I look forward to hearing from you all.
