RSPCA Join the race to protect greyhounds

Dear supporter,

Large numbers of racing greyhounds are suffering every year because of a lack of effective regulation.

Every year at least 10,000 greyhounds are retired from racing. The fate of many of these greyhounds is unknown and huge numbers simply 'disappear'.

Now we have the chance to protect them for the whole of their lives. But that chance expires in just a few days, on Wednesday, 22 July.

We've set ourselves a target to get at least 20,000 people to send a letter to the government by 22 July to push them to introduce special legislation for racing greyhounds under the Animal Welfare Act. After that, the consultation period closes for good.

If we lose the race, so do greyhounds.
Take Action Now - Click here to protect greyhounds

We need
the government to know that the public is unhappy about the uncertainty around racing greyhounds.

We need them to know that thousands of people support legislation that will protect each and every racing greyhound, by law, from cradle to grave.

And we need to let them know by 22 July so that we don't miss our chance. Please sign the campaign letter now, then forward this email on to other animal lovers so we can reach as many people as possible, as quickly as possible.

the most important greyhound race of all.
It's one they can't afford to lose.

Why have "Pit Bulls" increased from 1% of the dog population to 6%?
Because they are great family pets.
Along with misreporting the state of the economy for decades the mainstream media has misrepresented the amazing story of "pit bulls."
This breed had always been referred to as "the nanny dog" and was the dog of choice for kids in TV programs such the East Side Kids.
However, the modern media's need to sensationalize the extreme cases of any issue in order to gain viewers and readers has re-identified this gentle breed as aggressive.
Learn the story of the American Staffordshire Terrier and the American Pit Bull Terrier in a documentary entitled "Pit Bull Paradox."

The Netherlands wants to ban the controversial anti-whaling organisation Sea Shepherd from sailing under the Dutch flag.  Public Works State Secretary Tineke Huizinga said Friday she wants to amend the law quickly to make this possible.

The American organization Sea Shepherd has two ships sailing under the Dutch flag.  The Netherlands provided the necessary certificate of registry for this in 2007, after Sea Shepherd had promised in writing not to use violence and to comply with the safety rules.  Nonetheless a number of incidents have taken place between Sea Shepherd ships and Japanese whalers in the Antarctic.

Japan has repeatedly complained to the Netherlands about the Sea Shepherd. It appears difficult at the moment to take action against ships that do not comply with the rules, so the cabinet wants speedily to extend its legal options for withdrawing certificates of registry.

THIS CANNOT BE ALLOWED TO HAPPEN!

Please take a moment to read about this important issue and join me in signing the petition.  It takes just 30 seconds but can truly make a difference.  We are trying to reach 1000 signatures so please sign here: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/appeal-to-the-dutch-government-who-wants-emergency-act-against-environmental-pirates-sea-shepherd

PETITION:

Make All Breeding Mills ILLEGAL.

Target:
Have Obama consisder the pain and suffering the animals live threw.
Sponsored by:

"Communities spend millions of taxpayer dollars each year coping with problems that a failure to spay and neuter causes."
"Tens of thousands of kittens and puppies are born each day in the United States, leaving millions of animals who already exsist to face a severe lack of homes. Animal Control agencies and shelters receive approximately 6 to 8 million animals annually. This is happening in your own back yard. Those who are not adopted-- some 3 to 4 million of them-- must be put to death. No matter what you do, you will not be able to find homes for them."

One male and female (cat or dog) Breeding.
One cat mates with an other and they have a litter of four kittens. Those kittens mate and have four more. Then those kittens have four more. In just a matter of 1 or more years that one breeding makes the 2 cats responsiable for nearly 60 stray cats.

A breeding mill is always severly cruel. It could start out small with just a few animals, but one day you will have an over run house with sex addited pets. This will lead you to to many animals. After a while you will have thousands of animals cramed into cages. Living with out food or water for long periods of time. Most die befor they reach adult hood.
The cages are small and crowded. The main breeding pets are to exsausted to breed. They also get to food, water, a place to run and play, or anything the normal pet would get. Fourced to breed every year. Once they cant they are disposed of and replaced by a younger one.

Over the years pet breeding has became a big problem that know one seems to want to take care of. Please help make breeding mills illegal. For the sake of there lifes. There are many of pets at your local shelter that want a nice cuddly home. Older dogs and cats need homes to.
Its simple PLEASE Nueture and spay your pets.

Be a part of the solution:
Enact a life saving law.
Dozens od cities and counties all over the country are aggressively addressing the animal overpopulation crisis, requiring everyone who chooses not to spay or neuter to pay a hefty breeders fee. Area's with mandatory spay/neuter laws have reported a significant reduction in the number of animals taken to their facilities and subsesquently euthanized.

Address the problem. Sign this Petiton and stop the problem befor it gets to big.

Norway exotic animal threat to people and wildlife

Diseases to both humans and wild animals could flood into Norway on a tide of imported exotic animals, claim Norwegian and British animal protection experts.

Groups lobbying for better animal protection on both sides of the North Sea today gave an urgent plea to the Norwegian government not to change laws to allow sales of exotic reptiles and amphibians in the country and suffer deadly outcomes – as already seen in Britain.
UK-based organisations have teamed up with a Norwegian animal protection group to commission a 65-page scientific report, just released. Opposition to a proposal to lift a long-term ban on the trade and private ownership of reptiles and amphibians in Norway is based on three main findings:
·      Threat to wild animals
The new threat could bring pandemic wildlife diseases that have only recently been identified in Britain. These diseases kill established species and are costly to contain. ‘Norden’, the body representing the wider Scandinavia group of countries (Denmark,  Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden) has circulated an alert for a 'serious new threat to Nordic [wild] amphibians’, drawing attention to the two diseases that have spread into Britain and elsewhere in Europe as a result of animal  trade. In opening the trade, the Norwegian government may even be acting unlawfully in contravention to Article 6 of the Berne Convention under which it is obliged to protect its native wild fauna.
·      Human health hazard
Every twenty days a person dies in developed Europe/North America from pathogens transmitted as a result of exotic reptiles in captivity. Over the same period around 800 people are hospitalized for up to a week or more at a cost of over ÂŁ1 million. This includes two babies who have died in Britain over the last ten years. Does Norway really want to bring this home too?
·      Not good pets
Research shows that although not obviously alert, like cats and dogs, many captive reptiles suffer from stress and illness. Shutting them off in small tanks and boxes represents deprivation that is cruel but unnoticed. Most reptiles die within one year in captivity. In fact, the reptile industry has been compared to the ‘cut flower’ trade, as both industries are based on perishable commodities that are expected to die soon after purchase.
World expert in amphibians and reptiles (herpetofauna) consultant Tom Langton, who has represented the IUCN at the Standing Party of the Berne Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats in Strasbourg (France) says:
“Beyond disease and welfare issues, the proposal to open up an exotic pet trade in Norway would send the wrong education message through Europe, where children are encouraged to watch wildlife in their gardens and countryside. The Norwegian government may not be aware that several European countries envy Norway’s current position and are aiming towards lower consumption of wild and captive-bred animals.”

Further information:
In 1976, Norway set an example to the rest of Europe by banning, on animal welfare grounds, the keeping of reptiles and amphibians as pets. However, the Norwegian government is now considering a proposal to permit the trade and private ownership of certain reptile and amphibian species. The proposal, prompted by wildlife dealers and exotic animal keepers, has strong opposition from animal welfare and conservation groups internationally and will be a test of will for a country much admired by others inside the European Union. EU countries have let the trade run out of control with disastrous consequences to people and native species.
In a newly commissioned report, scientists who specialise in animal welfare and zoonotic disease have strongly recommended that the Norwegian government reject the proposal to re-open trade. This recommendation was made on the grounds that poor animal welfare is endemic to reptile- and amphibian-keeping and that reptiles and amphibians in the domestic environment continue to generate a significant and major public health problem.
In the UK, following two infant deaths from reptile-related salmonellosis (RRS), repeated pubic health warnings have been issued regarding the keeping of reptiles as pets. Just five weeks ago, a two-month old baby boy in Cheshire was hospitalised with RRS caught from pet reptiles in the home.

Hundreds of thousands of reptiles and amphibians are taken from the wild each year to supply the European pet trade. The capture process is invariably crude and brutal and many animals die before being exported, during transit or once in captivity.

The potential threat of introducing non-native, ‘alien’ species to Norway, by re-introducing a new trade in wild animals, is also raised as an important issue in the report. Of particular concern is a current pandemic disease of amphibians that is beginning to circulate in northern Europe. The pet trade offers a perfect way for Norway's amphibian fauna to become infected in exactly the same way as has already happened in Britain.
'Chytrid', a parasitic fungus, has been killing frogs around the world in recent years. There have been outbreaks in the UK and Denmark but not yet in Sweden, Finland or Norway. Ranavirus probably introduced from North America on traded frogs has killed millions of British frogs and is now present on mainland Europe.
UK-based organisations; Advocates for Animals, the Animal Protection Agency, the Born Free Foundation, International Animal Rescue and the World Society for the Protection of Animals, teamed up with the Norwegian Animal Protection Alliance to commission the 65-page scientific report. The report examines the proposed list in detail and its resonant conclusion is that:

“the list is incapable of itemizing reptile or amphibian species that are ‘suitable’ as pets because, under scientific evidence-based criteria and scrutiny, such reptiles and amphibians do not exist.”

The Norwegian government may be acting unlawfully in contravention to Article 6 of the Berne Convention, which states that each Contracting Party (government) must â€œtake appropriate and necessary legislative and administrative measures to ensure the special protection of the wild fauna species.” This includes all of Norway’s native amphibians and reptiles and specifically requires the Norwegian government under Appendix III  "to prohibit the use of all indiscriminate means of capture and killing and the use of all means capable of causing local disappearance."

  • For more information or for a copy of the scientific report, please contact Elaine Toland on 01273 674253 or out of hours on 07986 535024.
  • The Animal Protection Agency, Born Free Foundation, International Animal Rescue and the Norwegian Animal Protection Alliance are members of ENDCAP – a pan-European coalition of animal welfare organisations working to end the keeping of wild animals in captivity (see www.endcaptivity.org).

FOR MORE DETAILS ABOUT THIS SITUATION

OK, my relatives, here we go! We have approximately 90 days to do what we have to do, so we can do what we need to do. Elders and Spiritual Leaders have been here. Prayers have been offered, ceremonies conducted. All have been given the same answer. The white and the black buffalo need to remain here on this property. As things stand right now, the offer for both of the buffalo is $15,000. No, Jill & Sonny will not donate them to us, for a tax credit or anything else. I already asked. Offers from many who have land to house them permanently have come in. It is estimated $5,000 to $10,000 to construct a facility for them on someone’s property, where they will be kept sacred. To obtain this entire facility, all 136 acres plus the amphitheater and all outbuildings is 1.2 million.

Putting aside the circumstances surrounding these two, even the most skeptic of individuals must admit something is happening. Yes, the white buffalo has been born several times in several places over the past few years. But not in such an unusual way. Then add to that a second buffalo, in the same place, from a different female, in the same unusual way? One black, one white. One female, one male. A white deer. Wild animals turning white. All on the same 136 acres. Where the most influential battle in the history of this country happened? Seriously, my relatives. There is coincidence, but all of this? In the same small space? We have been so busy waiting for the thunder, we missed it.

So, now it is down to the wire. We are all only six people away from the one we need to tell about this - the one who can write the check. We have approximately 90 days. It is up to us now. It is time to put aside our differences and finally come together as one.

What can YOU do - what WILL you do?

Australia's astounding hypocrisy - kangaroos used for tourist promotions abroad and massacred at home!

Kangaroos are being used to promote Kangaroo Island in London and other towns and cities in UK.
You are probably aware that the biggest land wildlife slaughter in the world takes place in Australia - the massacre of kangaroos!
How dare the tourism authorities be so hypocritical !

Life-size kangaroo statues have been placed in landmark locations across London...

Also please visit link: http://www.gday-uk.co.uk/about-gdayuk
G’dayUK 2009 is a series of events positioning Australia as an innovative and thriving economy. The aim is to encourage British companies and consumers alike to take another look at Australia as a great place to invest in, work, holiday, do business with and generally get to know...

The kangaroos would be very grateful if you can help by:

a) contacting sponsors & event organisers (list below)
List of other supporters / sponsors can be found on http://www.gday-uk.co.uk/about-gdayuk
Please note that half of logos of the sponsors (listed on above website) carry the image of kangaroo!

b) attending some of these events and handing out information about the truth how Australia treats it's wildlife.

While writing you might wish to state something along the lines:

... You will not visit Australia, till you hear that the slaughter of kangaroos has stopped ...Before racing off to Kangaroo Island, which sounds like a fascinating place, you did a little research into what is happening to kangaroos (the national symbol) in Australia today... These amazing, unique and gentle animals are cruelly hunted, their joeys are stomped on or beaten to death, thousands of kangaroos have recently been killed in the national capital because they were in the way of housing and roads (although spurious 'science' was used to say that they 'threatened' endangered species. How can a kangaroo do more damage than a bulldozer?), they are constantly referred to as 'pests', and they are now going to be sold to China as meat!

How dare the tourism authorities be so hypocritical?  Australia needs to stop 'managing' and 'controlling' its native animals into extinction, and learn how live with them and treat them with respect and compassion before it earns the right to use them as an advertisement ...

Subject: Anyone in Birmingham?

We've been contacted by a lady who works in the Hockley area of Birmingham.  Pigeons have got into their old warehouse building through an open window and the building is due for demolition so we're looking for someone that could go along to the warehouse building and remove any babies and transport them to a wildlife hospital for hand-rearing as well as making sure all the adults are out of there.  Once that's done, they will close the windows to ensure no more birds get in.

If anyone in the Birmingham area can help, please can they contact me on 07903 011715.

Many thanks

Redditch Vegetarians & Vegans are co-ordinating the annual Animal Aid street collection in Redditch on Saturday 4th July. We have a permit to collect throughout the town centre, including inside the Kingfisher Shopping Centre.

If you have an hour or so to spare, why not come along to shake a tin, help raise funds for Animal Aid`s invaluable campaigns that promote vegetariansm/veganism. In previous years, over ÂŁ200 has been collected by just a handful of volunteers, imagine how much we could make if you bring all your friends!! Children under 16 are welcome to help, as long as they`re accompanied by an adult. Come for an hour or come for the whole day - any time you can spare would be very much appreciated.

We have everything you will need - tins, sashes, leaflets, stickers etc. There will also be a stall by the Three Cooks Bakery in the centre of town from 10.30am, from where you can collect your tins etc. For more details, please email reddiveggie@... or call 01527 458395.

Best wishes,

RVV

Eco Extravaganza is Hailed a Success

Redditch Advertiser 24/6/09

A GLORIOUSLY sunny day helped to ensure the success of the fourth annual Redditch Green Fair. On Saturday June 13, crowds flocked to St Stephen's Church in the town centre to learn about eco-friendly living at the event.

A total of 24 stalls filled St Stephen’s and the green outside. Stalls offered a very wide range of eco-friendly products, awareness raising information and displayed electric powered bicycles/vehicles, solar panels and wind turbines. There were also two tombolas and a fundraising raffle.

Members of Redditch Vegetarians and Vegans put on an impressive feast of free vegan food samples alongside recipes, nutrition information and details of the environmental benefits of plant based diets. Further catering was provided by Green Garden Cafe, a not-for-profit vegan catering business from Coventry.

Redditch-based group Talking Drums offered fair-goers the opportunity to join their drumming circle throughout the event. Further entertainment was provided by DeadMoney Duo, father and son musicians from Worcester. Many people also enjoyed a relaxing Indian head massage.

The event was organised by the Redditch Alliance of Greens (RAG), a coalition of local environmental groups.

Kevin White of RAG said: "Once again, the Redditch Green Fair showcased the growing number of local eco-friendly businesses alongside environmental organisations and campaign groups.

"It’s an eco extravaganza like no other for miles around, so it’s no wonder that many of our visitors come back year after year. The fair demonstrated that we can all easily adapt to planet-friendly living.

"If we value our children’s future, then doing nothing about climate change, over use of resources, pollution etc is simply not an option.”

All of the businesses and organisations at the fair have websites which are linked to www.redditchgreenfair.org.uk.

forwarded from the Animal Protection Agency:

Birmingham City Centre tin collection for the Animal Protection Agency - Saturday 1 August 2009

The Animal Protection Agency (APA) campaigns against the trade in wild animals as pets. Money raised from the collections will help us to produce a report on the state of bird keeping and welfare in the UK. Most parrots bred for the pet trade are subject to a process of parental deprivation, which can lead to lifelong psychological and behavioural problems for the birds. Behavioural frustrations are compounded when the birds, as adults, are forced to live in restricted and barren environments – some caged in solitary confinement for decades.

The continued over-breeding of parrots that are long-lived and have complex care needs presents an unmanageable problem for rescue centres and sanctuaries.

Parrots - even those that have been captive-bred - are wild animals and the Animal Protection Agency believes that they do not belong in the pet trade. However, it would be unrealistic to expect that a ban on keeping these animals could be achieved in the near future.

We will therefore be pushing hard for the Government to produce codes of practice for keeping parrots that reflect the knowledgeable and highly demanding care that they need. These guidelines will hopefully act as a deterrent to prospective parrot keepers. We will also be calling for much higher welfare standards for breeders and retailers, which may prove prohibitive for many who trade in these animals.

It’s an outrage that birds continue to suffer day after day, year after year, in tiny, barren cages and we will fight until this misery becomes a thing of the past.

Please help to ensure that the long-term suffering of these sensitive and intelligent birds receives the public and political attention it deserves.

If you are able to help us actively with a tin collection – if only just for an hour – then please call us on 01273 674253.

Wtih many thanks

Birmingham pair starved dogs to death
Jun 5 2009 by Nick McCarthy, Birmingham Mail
A BROTHER and sister from Birmingham have been told to expect a prison
sentence for starving two greyhound dogs and a cat to death. Two other
greyhounds were rescued from Julie Geanno's house late last year by the
RSPCA.
Geanno, 36, of Allcroft Road, Tyseley, admitted four charges of animal
cruelty at Birmingham Magistrates' Court.
Her brother, Stephen Watton, 46, of Nash Square, Perry Barr, pleaded guilty
to the same charges. He was caught digging graves in Geanno's back garden.
Veterinary surgeon, Steve Odell, told the court they were the "worst cases
of starvation" he had seen in his career.
He said starvation was the cause of death and the neglect had lasted for at
least two months.
The animals were emaciated and were covered in fleas and the house was
squalid and covered in dog faeces when the RSPCA and police arrived last
October.
Two greyhounds called Pearl and Annie were rescued by the RSPCA weighing
just 15.6kg and 18kg.
The RSPCA returned the next day to exhume the bodies of Spud the cat, who
weighed just 1.05kg, little more than a bag of sugar.
Two other greyhounds, Star and Meggie, were also exhumed from the back
garden graves and weighed just 11.25 and 11.85kg.
Mr Odell said: "All the animals were emaciated to a point I have never seen
before in my career.
"I have never seen one animal in this condition, let alone three from the
same address. The two surviving dogs would not have lived for more than a
few weeks if there had been no intervention."
Summing up, District Judge Tate told Watton and Geanno: "There is little or
no doubt you caused unnecessary suffering to these animals.
"There is also no shadow of a doubt the seriousness of these offences passes
the custody threshold.
"The length of time this went on for and the circumstances around the
disposal of the bodies are aggravating features.
"You will also be banned from keeping animals for a considerable period of
time.
"I am adjourning the hearing for the preparation of pre-sentence reports on
both of you."
The pair were bailed and will be sentenced on July 1.

Green Fair comes to town

Redditch Standard - 12/6/09

RESIDENTS looking to live a greener life can pick up tips and advice during a fair in the town centre this weekend.

The Redditch Alliance of Greens (RAG) is hoping to encourage eco-friendly living at its Green Fair tomorrow (Saturday) and provide a wealth of information for those looking to change the way they live.

Taking place in and around St Stephen's Church, the fair will offer a range of green products, Fairtrade goods, organic produce and natural gifts as well as useful leaflets to help visitors live a cleaner, greener, more ethical and healthier life.

Kevin White of RAG said: "We all need to alter the way we live if planet earth is to survive and people need to take a long hard look at the way they live their life.

"There's a fair chance that pretty much everything you do effects our environment in some way - transport, energy, consumerism, food, leisure, waste etc all have an enormous impact on the planet.

"Adapting to living in harmony with the planet doesn't mean you have to change your life beyond recognitions, it's about making simple changes such as choosing a renewable energy supplier, cutting down on waste and buying eco-friendly products."

As well as around 30 stalls there will be children's activities, vegan food samples and the chance to take part in a drumming circle with Redditch based group Talking Drums.

Mr White added: "No matter how much you know about planet-friendly living, nobody knows it all and as always there'll be lots to learn, see and do at the fair.

"Now in its fourth year, the fair keeps getting bigger and better - its a fun day out and free so you can't wrong."

Groups involved in the event include Redditch Friends of the Earth, Redditch Trade Justice Network, Redditch Vegetarians and Vegans and Redditch Freecycle.

The fair will run from 10.30am until 3pm.

Subj: If you care about animals sign the petition and send it to your friends - Thank you.

If you love animals - please read on...

Every year millions of animals and their owners are put through unbearable and unnecessary trauma at the hands of unscrupulous veterinary practitioners. The veterinary industry is no longer run by caring 'James Herriot' types. It is a multi-million pound, 'profit -driven - industry.

In 1999 Dispatches (produced by Twenty Twenty Television) released a half hour, one off programme called "Who Vets the Vets" this documentary scratched the surface and revealed some of the grim truth for the first time. Pulling back the curtain on sadistic practices, cruelty beyond belief and all for money!

Animals put through unnecessary operations, beloved pets entering the veterinary environment for relatively simple treatment and ending up in a living nightmare of pain and suffering (one beautiful dog went in for something simple and returned home in a bin bag in pieces!) drugs administered unnecessarily, animal companions euthanased for no good reason and all for money. Since the making of the Dispatches programme NOTHING has changed.

Why? Because the veterinary industry is SELF REGULATED by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). If you train and study and qualify and become a member of the RCVS - what do you think the chances are of you ever being found guilty BY THEM of negligence? THIS MUST CHANGE FOREVER.

You have the chance to make a difference. Please sign the petition at the link below and pass it on to anyone you know who cares about animal welfare and our rights as pet owners.

Thank you.

strongly urge you to think twice before you view it. I can't get the
pictures and squeals out of my mind. Please sign the petition.

Subject: Correction: Check Out PETA's New Spoof Web Site for Seals:
OlympicShame2010. com

We're sorry for the inconvenience! Some of the links in the previous
e-mail that you received were not working properly. Please read this
version instead. Thank you.

Dear Yvonne,

We have just launched a new interactive Web site, OlympicShame2010. com,
which is a spoof of the Vancouver Olympic mascot's site, to intensify
global pressure on the Canadian government to end the bloody seal
slaughter once and for all.

Meet the "evil" Vancouver Olympic mascots.

We thank you so much for all that you have done thus far and ask you to
take at least one more action now. OlympicShame2010. com has a variety
of options to choose from: You can send anti-seal slaughter e-cards to
friends, send automated e-mails to government and Olympic officials,
pledge to join our international boycott of Canada's most iconic
product (maple syrup), post Olympic Shame demo photos, download Web
banners and MySpace page layouts, order free stickers, purchase
campaign materials (including t-s
hirts, a plush baby seal embroidered
with the message "Hugs, Not Clubs"), and much more!

As this year's seal slaughter draws to a close, our campaign efforts
are only just beginning, and we ask that you please continue to fight
along with us until there is no more blood on the ice. Canada and the
Vancouver Olympics cannot ignore the international outcry against the
seal slaughter if they continue to hear from compassionate people like
you.

Stay tuned for more campaign updates. And thank you for all that you've
done to help animals!

Very truly yours,

Ingrid E. Newkirk
President
