Hi,

I just signed a petition to Danish Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, who will be hosting the Copenhagen climate negotiations in December.

Many leaders are promising to help people living in extreme poverty adapt to the effects of climate change. This sounds great, but unfortunately, on closer examination, it turns out most of this money could be double counted - it's money that has already been promised as development aid. This double counting is dangerous as it undermines both sustainable international development and a good global deal on clime change. It needs to be exposed and stopped.

As host of the Copenhagen talks, Mr. Rasmussen is one of the people best placed to make this happen.

Please join me in taking action here:

Together as ONE we can make a difference!

Thanks!

Dear Friend,
We have some important and exciting news to share with you: as of
November 2009 – after a two-year PETA campaign to get foie gras
removed from their stores – Selfridges has stopped selling the
notoriously cruel "delicacy of despair" and have promised PETA's
chief campaign spokesperson on this issue, Sir Roger Moore, via
telephone that they will not sell it in the future.
The move comes as a result of our stepping up the campaign and the
tenacious support of Sir Roger – as well as all the help from committed
PETA members, volunteers and activists like you who sent Selfridges
more than 5,000 e-mails and hundreds of letters and bombarded their
head office with telephone calls. To read more, please visit our
website.
Our work doesn't stop there, of course. Millions of animals are still
held captive on factory farms destined to be on a dinner plate, on fur
farms about to be skinned for coats or trapped and scared in laboratory
cages. PETA is a force to be reckoned with, and we will not stop until
every cage is opened and every animal is free from abuse.
Together, we and animals will win! Thank you.
Sincerely,

Ingrid E. Newkirk

While we celebrate, as we should, please remember that there are still
millions of wonderful animals destined to be on someone's dinner plate
or worn on someone's back and millions huddled somewhere in cages. In
their name, please make a donation today to help PETA's vital work and
produce more victories such as this one.

Good News!

Dear Jean,

Thanks to thousands of Compassion supporters, together we have ensured that Celtic Link Ferries will not carry forward their proposal to open a livestock transport route from the UK to France.

Over 1,500 Compassion supporters sent emails to Celtic Link Ferries in protest, following our urgent action appeal last week. And today we had confirmation from the company that there will be ‘no shipping of livestock for slaughter on its service between Portsmouth and Cherbourg in either direction’.

Celtic Link Ferries’ proposal to open a livestock transport route from Portsmouth Port to France was also met by regular demonstrations and high profile opposition. Thank you to anyone who has taken part.

Please go to our website for more information.

Thank you for your continued support.

Preparing the fire bullSpain prepares for cruel bullfighting event

Dear rachel

Every year in mid November the people in Medinaceli, Spain, gather to "enjoy" an event of unspeakable cruelty. For the "Toro Júbilo" balls of "pitch", a sticky substance derived from petroleum or plants, are attached to both of the bull’s horns and set on fire.

A cheering crowd of blood sports enthusiasts harasses the toro de fuego or “bull on fire” once it is released onto the streets.

The balls burn for hours and hurt the horns, body and eyes, causing terrible suffering. In some instances bulls ran against walls in a desperate attempt to escape the unimaginable pain and suffering.
Click here to email the Spanish authorities and urge them to stop the Toro Júbilo.
This event takes place this weekend. We need your support to stop it. Help us to make bullfighting history!

Many thanks.

PROMOTE COMPASSIONATE, ECO-FRIENDLY DIETS AT THE WAVE IN LONDON!!

Are you interested in travelling on a coach from Birmingham or Redditch to `The Wave` in London on Sat 5th December

This year`s National Climate March (known as `The Wave`) will be by far the biggest ever environmental march & rally in the UK. In previous years, up to 20,000 people have flowed through the streets, but numbers are expected to be far higher this year.

This event is a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness amongst those who care about the planet, people and wildlife, that their choice of diet is a critical issue. Switching to a plant based diet is not only one of the most effective actions you can take to beat climate change, it`s also one of the easiest & it`s affordable for all (unlike installing solar panels on your roof or buying an electric car!). We need to get this message across at this event.

Would you like to help hand out leaflets to people on The Wave? Or would you prefer to display a banner or placard with a thought provoking message about eco-friendly veggie/vegan diets?

If enough people come forward soon, the coach will be booked. It will pick up from Birmingham & Redditch and cost around £12 waged / £6 unwaged per seat.

For reasons beyond our control, this is very last minute and we need to assess interest quickly and get the coach booked asap. So please respond immediately, or as soon as you can, if you`d like to go! Email info@veganmidlands. org.uk

More details about the event can be found here http://www.the- wave.org. uk and here http://www.campaign cc.org/climatema rch2009

Best wishes,
MVC

Live Exports Action

EDM 581

Beak Trimming

Dear Jean,

Farm animals on passenger ferries
URGENT ACTION

Following a proposal by Celtic Link Ferries to open a transport route for live exports from Portsmouth to France using passenger ferries, there were attempts to get lorries carrying sheep out of Portsmouth. Although these lorries were stopped for animal health reasons, it is worrying that live exports could start any day now.

Despite public and parliamentary calls to end the trade of live animals and the wealth of scientific evidence showing that animals suffer during these long journeys, Celtic Link Ferries has become the first passenger ferry company in Britain to take part in this inhumane trade since 1994.

Compassion condemns the trade in live animals and asks supporters to lobby Celtic Link Ferries to change their policy and prohibit this cruel and unnecessary trade.

Please send an urgent email to Celtic Link Ferries urging them to stop supporting this inhumane and unnecessary trade.

Has your MP signed EDM 581?

We are only three weeks away from the closing date of the EDM on food labelling and the welfare of chickens. Thank you to everyone who has lobbied their MP to sign the EDM - we are now only 24 signatures away from our target of 300. Please click here to check whether your MP is one of the good guys.

Stand up for chickens: keep the ban on beak trimming

So far, more than 3,000 supporters have sent an e-card urging the UK government to keep the ban on beak trimming - which is under threat. If you haven't already, please send an e-card to Jim Fitzpatrick MP, Agriculture Minister.

"How can we feed the world and protect the environment?"
"It is decision time"

Last week, renowned environment expert, Lester Brown, gave our 2009 Peter Roberts Memorial Lecture, "How can we feed the world and protect the environment?"

At the lecture, Lester also launched his latest book "Plan B 4.0: Mobilising to save civilisation".

He told the 400-strong audience: "Our generation will make the decision, but it will affect life on earth for all generations to come."

The welfare of dairy cows

Our recent appeal on dairy cows has raised the shocking reality of the hidden suffering in the dairy industry. Scientific experts on animal health and welfare have said that cows in the European Union are bred to produce unreasonable amounts of milk and suffer from hunger, lameness and infertility.

Click here for the top three changes you can make to improve the welfare of dairy cows and their calves.

Is there a Christmas fair in your local area?

Why not find out if you can set up a stand to raise funds for Compassion. It's a great time to start talking to people about where their food comes from. For more information, please contact Supporter Services today.

A lasting gift
