Hi Spacefans,

One of the members of the York AS posted the following on the YAS forum...

Hope it informs...

'Uncle' MArtin

Nasa's experiment last month to find water on the Moon was a major success, US scientists have announced. The space agency smashed a rocket and a probe into a large crater at the lunar south pole, hoping to kick up ice.
Scientists who have studied the data now say instruments trained on the impact plume saw copious quantities of water-ice and water vapour.

Gentlemen,

Many of us, indeed perhaps all of us like to own and collect autographs when possible.
However, does anyone collect flown items too, or perhaps prefer that to autographs? I have a few space flown collectables in addition to astronaut/cosmonaut autographs.

Any thoughts??

ANY Spaceman/woman is good in my book.
I could go to Autographica and get 5-6 autos for around 250 zobberos or one auto for 170 zobberos and I would still be happy.
Its like books or model kits, I don't buy them all at once but drip, drip, drip, I'll get them all eventually...
(ask Our Lass or Me Ol' Lady...)

But reading the comments on Autographica's forum you would think its the be-all-and-end-all getting auto's!

Last April's Autographica I only got Helen Sharman's but I made a day out of it with Our Lass. But to read what some muppits post, its as if they want 100's of guest's just for them!

I would add, yes, Tom S was dear, but Sept 2008 I got four for nowt! (Where I caught up with Rob) So really the whole collection has'nt cost me that much and as for 'fund raising'...

Gentlemen,

I don't know if Rob Wood looks at this forum or not? but I tend to agree with his comments in the latest issue of CapCom.
It would be nice to see some new guests and more cosmonauts (would keep Uncle Ken happy too!).
It was good to see Tom Stafford, but as he points out - at that price all I did was have a look!
The only recent highlights for me at Autographica (not counting meeting up with you boys again) was Alexei Leonov, Bruce McCandless and last but not least our very own Helen Sharman who made a very welcome appearance.

Hi 'Uncle' Dave
White? News to me... Heller-Humbrol was during the '80's, they also got in to bed with a Danish or German company Ceji.

So, you lot don't know the silver astronauts?

Meccano

They had a space themed series and included copies of Airfix's little space men. They were awful kits, Meccano does not do aeroplanes or space. Steam engine, crane and the like, yes.

DO Dave do tell more on your modelling, am very interested. You have seen my models in the album pages?

I've just been up to rummage around in the stock pile on top of the wardrobe and found a box of Airfix astronauts.
They are from the Heller-Humbrol era, any idea what year that puts them in? White plastic. I have this strange idea the original issue was yellow, please tell me I'm imagining it.

The box does say 1:72 scale. All the other soft plastic soldiers were OO/HO railway sizes which is 1:76 to 1:87, but the Airfix soldier scales were a law unto themselves. The British paratrooper figures were beautifully crafted but about twice the size of the German infantry sold at the same time.

Silver astronauts? Never seen them. Not Preiser?

Almost 20 years ago, Andy Salmon and I were contemplating making more accurate lunar rover models in white metal to go with the figures. Never got round to it, and I don't think I have the touch any more to attempt making a master model.

I use to detail them with differnt coloured arm bands and paint the visors gold. Mixed and matched with the two astronauts and EALSEP from Airfix's LM they could be made to look good.

While on the subject of airfix, I wish they had made half of the LM stowage section on the Saturn V clear plastic so that you could see it. I guess you know what I mean?

Martin,

see
http://www.le.ac.uk/bulletin/spacecentrejune2001.pdf

which says the NSC Blue Streak is on loan from Liverpool. I think it is vehicle
F16.
