I'm making good use of your Job's dairy material on my hayesmiddx4
Yahoogroup. where people reminisce about Hayes Middlesex (where I
come from.)

Job's milkmen were very much part of the scene in days gone by in
Hayes.

Josh,
Looking at your site for hayes I seem to remember collecting milk
from a dairy of the uxbridge road. If you came from heathrow with
central ave on your left and I think you turned right at the adam &
Eve or it could have been another pub and went up the road/lane a
mile or so there was a local dairy there I can't rember thew name b
ut they produced their own milk etc and they had a few old floats
around the yard, but this was in 1994 i wondered if it was still
there.

My ex-milkman father is also Ernie now aged 93. Its quite amazing how many
people remember Benny Hill's song The fastest milkman in the west. I was at
Drusilla's zoo park with my grandchildren last year. In there is a Express
Dairy milkfloat for the children to play on. Guess whose name was on the
front. Ernie!

Attached is a picture of my father in the Goldhawk Road Shepherds Bush in
1936. A copy has been lodged in the Hammersmith and Fulham historical
archive.

Ernie Bray

Hi Don,

Well...1994 wasn't so long ago. There is a Dalton's Farm opposite
where I live which had a Dalton's Dairy, but your directions are
nowhere near that.. in fact, they seem to go towards Southall.

Glad you know Hayes anyway! Very interested in this dairy.. would you
be able to pinpoint it on http://www.streetmap.co.uk maybe ?
Otherwise, we'll have to chat on the phone some time so I can work
out where it is/was.

Dalton's rings a bell with me but I can't place southall but you
are prberley right. If you come from there to the uxbridge rd you
turn left and eventually end up at the retail park on the right.I
went through there a few weeks ago, and was totally lost.

Re-reading your original message, I'm starting to think it must have
been Dalton's, and that maybe you turned right at a pub called the
White Hart (which closed a few months ago!)

The farm is still there, but they seem to have given up on milk
delivery (I used to have a Dalton's milkman deliver to my door, but
about 8 or 9 years ago the round was taken over by Express), and the
cows seem to have gone from their fields this year as well.

You can see 2 pix of the White Hart in this album:

Look familiar?

Wish Dalton's still had their floats... some of the local kids used
to nip into their yard and joyride on them!

Beware folks... there seems to be an upsurge in virus activity at the
moment.

Usual advice: make sure you have up-to-date antivirus software installed,
don't open any suspect attachments, expecially any that say something like
audio/wav or midi, .exe, .pif etc.

Some viruses get to work without you evening opening the email, especially
if you use Outlook in a manner that lets you view the first few lines of
each email.

People who have individual copies of all emails sent to their email address
are particularly at risk.

ALSO: please be aware that MANY virus emails fill in the "FROM" field with a
name taken from the address book of the infected PC, meaning it looks as
though Mr X's PC sent it, when in fact he's blameless, it was Mr Y's PC.

Bluebird aims for the fastest milkman in the west
BLUEBIRD AUTOMOTIVE, which last year set a new UK speed record of 137mph for
an electric car, is likely to make Express Dairies the fastest milkman in
the west.

The manufacturer, based in the Swansea Valley, is using the same technology
to supply the milk firm with 6 pre-production urban delivery vehicles.

These vehicles will lead to full-scale production, including a complete
replacement of Express Dairies' fleet of milk floats.

Motoring editor of The Western Mail, Robin Roberts, told Autowired that the
Bluebird company had been working on the delivery vehicle for 18-months and
that 350 new jobs could be created to meet demand over the next 5-years.

The vehicle, which can be custom-built to the size and requirement of the
customer, can be used 24-hours a day, seven days a week.

This is because it is supplied with two sets of batteries, and while the
vehicle is out and about being used, one set is recharged back at base. The
batteries can then be replaced in less time than it takes to load up the
milk or other goods.

Martin Rees, chairman of Bluebird Automotive, said, "We have always known
that electric vehicles are the cleanest and cheapest source of automotive
power. The problem has always been the time it takes to recharge.

"We believe we have solved that problem and so, for the first time, our
electric vehicles will be able to run 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Because the batteries are interchanged and charged off the vehicle, it will
be possible to refuel the XDV in the same time that it takes to fill a
petrol or diesel van, but at a fraction of the price.

"We believe this is a delivery vehicle for the 21st Century and the interest
we are getting from potential clients suggests that they do too." Bluebird
says that while the vehicle is priced very competitively, its running costs
are tiny when compared with petrol or diesel units. Completely
emission-free, the latest generation electric motors also offer swift
acceleration and the top speed of 60mph makes it eminently practical.

The following is a message received from Nick Abbott of the Ipswich
Transport Museum. As you may be aware I was down at the museum over the
weekend. While I was there Nick informed me that the museum were considering
reducing their stock of milk floats and Nick agreed to supply information on
which vehicles were for disposal.
If anyone is interested in acquiring any for the mentioned vehicles can they
please contact Nick. If you buy one contact us!

Richard,

I've just checked out the yahoo mailing list, the vehicles that the museum
is looking to dispose of are shown in message 365 and 367. The vehicle in
367 originated from London somewhere and I don't think much more of its
history is known. It is on solid tyres and I think has a charger, but no
batteries, and I have no idea if it is complete. The other two vehicles are
the same as the vehicle in 366, and are mobile vegetable carts. One still
has all the vegetable racks and the other has been stripped out so looks
like a milk float. Again, I'm not sure about the operational state of these
two vehicles, as they were towed to the museum, and we don't have any
batteries for them, but they look fairly complete. The paragraph below is
what I wrote on the Musuems web site about the vehicle inside the museum,
which we are keeping. The others will eventually get broken up and go for
scrap if we can't find new owners for them. We would not be willing to sell
parts off of them, if somebody wants one, they have to have the whole
vehicle!

Smiths Electric Vegetable Cart

Donated to the Museum in March 2002 by the Co-op, this vehicle dates from
1965 and is registered FDX 346D. It was in regular use until the Summer of
2001, when the last two rounds were withdrawn. Originally there were over 40
green grocery carts/rounds in the Ipswich area, and apart from milk, were
the last regular 'door to door' service offered by the Co-op. In the past,
the Co-op has offered green grocery, butchery, bakery and mobile shop
services. Along with this vehicle, EPV 228D and FDX 621D were also donated
to the Museum, being the last three owned by the Co-op.

Hope this is useful

There is some terrific material coming in, my thanks to everyone. And
Richard, thanks for you valuable work re Ipswich.

As you may have noticed if you visit the Yahoogroup on the web, we
have exceeded our paltry storage limit, so older posts will get
purged which is such a nuisance. I can't understand why Yahoo don't
at least offer the option of passing them a fiver for a bigger limit.

I would dearly love to set this up along the lines of other sites I
run, with Webshots albums, home page etc, but just can't ... I'm
already struggling to keep up with all the sites I already maintain
(as visitors to some of them may have noticed.)

But that nice Mr Root has, I believe, been saving all the piccies,
and has an excellent milk float website, so that's a big relief.

I do hope David that you will be able to accommodate much of what is
posted here on your site... the leading Milk Float site in the UK!

Josh.

PS There is an option of course of starting a milko2 Yahoogroup, so
new posts go on to that and don't add to our limit. If anyone thinks
that's a good idea, let me know.... otherwise I'll leave things as
they are.
