We got accepted into the Palm Pre WebOS developer preview today. Nice framework
with a solid emulator.
The biggest advantage the Pre seems to have over the iPhone is that it supports
background apps.
That's good news for apps that rely on location tracking (Locle).
However, it doesn't look like they make it easy for users to work out what apps
are running in the background, what cpu/data/network/battery resources they are
consuming.
Has anyone else heard the rumour that Apple will soon allow 1 app to run in the
background on the iPhone?

Hello,
I am a doctoral candidate at Fielding Graduate University in Santa Barbara,
California. This survey is part of my doctoral research into the market
orientation of firms in the global wireless industry. The purpose of the survey
is to help me determine practices that fuel successful innovation and profit.
All responses will be kept anonymous and confidential. A summary of the survey
results, as well as my analysis, will be shared with everyone who participates.
My interest is focused on member firms in Mobile Monday. I would love to have
firms in the Dublin chapter participate! Already sending in surveys are firms
in Boston, Austin, Silicon Valley, Chicago and New York. I am trying to contact
all individual member groups around the world.
Here is the link to the survey:

I am sure my analysis will prove useful. I look forward to hearing from you.
Thank you again.

Ronan,
Option C: a speaker/presentation of some kind can focus the networking. 1
speaker for 10 mins can do. Sort of a here's what's new for us.
Most people would be happy to hand over a few quid for entry.

Given the squeeze on the purse these days, I can understand the problems of getting a sponsor. John's offer of a venue sounds good. Why not find out how many would be interested in attending, assume everyone would be willing to part with a tenner at the door and have some coffee, tea and biscuits lined up in advance? Casual mingling of like-minded mobile specialists, and probably enough left over in the kitty to afford better biscuits for next time...

An unthemed casual meetup. This would be something like our previous format, but with no organised speakers or theme (or sponsorship). This makes the event more a casual meeting of mobile folk than a more formal MoMo event, with the tremendous advantage of being much simpler to organise (no speakers to corral), the downside being that you'd have to pay for your own drinks.
A OpenCoffee-like event, held during the day in some cafe, probably somewhere near the city center. This would be something of a break with the Mobile Monday format, but may suit people better and draw a new and different audience.

Hi All,
We (mttnow.com) are in the happy position to be growing our team in Dublin. We
are currently looking for a Senior Java Developer.
The full job description can be found here:
http://tinyurl.com/mobile-senior
If you're interested you can apply via that link as well. Feel free to pass the
link on to anybody you think might be suitable.
Thanks,
Paschal.
If you're considering developing data management for Java
ME, consider the case of Movimiento ATM, an Argentine mobility software company
that saved time and money by swapping its "homegrown" database for an
off-the-shelf Java ME DBMS.
Database
benchmarks are standard fare on mainframe computers, servers and PCs. With
mobile applications managing growing volumes of complex data, is it any wonder
the DBMS performance test has now come to smartphones?
Software vendor McObject has successfully deployed its TestIndex benchmark
application on T-Mobile’s Android-based G1 smartphone, to measure performance
of the SQLite embedded database alongside McObject’s open source Perst™
embedded database as the two perform typical data management functions. The comparison showed that gaps in database performance can be measured
as easily in this pocket-sized test bed as in more traditional benchmark
environments with rack-mounted hardware. On three of the four TestIndex
metrics, Perst performed database tasks significantly faster—more than 16 times
faster, in the case of database inserts..
McObject has gathered benchmark results and analysis into a report, available
for free
download from McObject’s Web site. McObject also offers the TestIndex
application, with complete source code, to run in the Android emulator as
well as on the T-Mobile G1 and any future phones based on Google’s Android
platform.
You can also read McObject's announcement
summarizing the benchmark test findings.
Apple sent our iPhone / iPod Touch application live today in the iTunes
App Store.
http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?
id=305188273
If you have an iPhone (or not!) please download the app, give a 5-star
rating and positive review before
Monday, when Apple will publish Locle to the iTunes App Store directory
categories under "Social Networking" and "New and Noteworthy".
We're charging 1.59 euros. Consider it like you're buying me a drink.
A cheap drink. But a drink nonetheless.
Thanks in advance.

Hi folks,
Last year, we voted Sentry Wireles as our local nomination to go through
to the Mobile Monday Global Peer Awards - to compete against the best
mobile startups from around the world.
This year, the event is again at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona
in February:
You'll have a chance to submit some information about your company, a
pitch, a slide show or a video. I'm assured by Locle that it's easy
enough :-) The selection process will then take place in the New Year.
And in other news... after almost two years of organising the
MoMoDublin, I'm going to hand over the reins. My colleagues Ronan Cremin
and Claire O'Gorman will be your hosts for future events, and I'm sure
there will be an exciting programme for 2009.
I've had a lot of fun starting and growing the MoMoDublin community and
organising the events. It's become a great community and one that I hope
continues to grow over the coming years.
Hope to see you all again soon & have a great Christmas and New Year!

Hi all,
We've analysed our mobiForge user base (mostly mobile developers and
professionals) by country and city.
http://mobiforge.com/developing/blog/hotbeds-mobile-development
While Ireland doesn't break into the top 10, Dublin comes an impressive
3rd - and no, they're not all dotMobi employees ;-)
Flanked by such cities as London, Chennai and Mumbai, this is no mean
feat, per capita.
It's not *massively* scientific (it helps to be English speaking, for
example), but it's a decent statistical sample of a considerable user
base.
May Dublin's mobile heritage long continue!

Hi all,
Today sees a new "State of the Mobile Web" report published by Opera:
http://tinyurl.com/5ub3py
Their spotlight is on Asia this month: and although one needs to
consider the results in the context of handsets that have Opera Mini
installed, the obvious trend is the complete dominance of Nokia handsets
amongst the top 9 countries analysed.
In the Philippines, page-view growth since January 2008 has been over
(wait for it) 1120%.
Lots of great trends in there for those who track the growth of the
mobile world in general.
Thanks
James

Hi everyone,
This month's Mobile Monday Dublin is next Monday, 17th November. And
it's a big one: our topic is "Location-Based Services & Mobile Social
Networks".
We start at 6:30 for 7:00pm, upstairs at The Odeon, Harcourt Street.
Our esteemed speakers are as follows:
Locle - Ronan Higgins & Pieter Oonk
http://locle.com
We kick off with two of Dublin's own mobile & location based social
networking experts. They'll be discussing LBS in general, and their own
implementation, "as featured in the Sunday Times".
JustRoutes - Dave Rooney
http://justroutes.com
Dave will discuss the company's online & mobile travel planner for
Dublin. Definitely born out of too many traffic jams.
RateMyArea - Mike Brennan
http://ratemyarea.com
Describing and demonstrating a cool new service that lets you review,
share and discuss local businesses whilst mobile.
Wubud - Ewan Spence
http://wubud.com
Our grand finale from Paul Walsh's still-stealth mobile social
networking startup - not to mention the inimitable Mr Spence.
Folks, with this line up, this is set to be an fantastic evening.
As ever, Mobile Monday Dublin is totally free - your only obligation is
to let us know you're coming, so that we can plan refreshment
accordingly. Do so by mailing us at nov08@... or by leaving a
comment on the blog at http://www.momodublin.com/?p=25.
This is likely to be our final event of 2008, and let's go out with a
bang! We're good for space this time, so... spread the word, bring a
friend or two, and we'll see you all next week.
Best regards
James
Hello Dublin mobilists!
There are a couple of events for the MobileMonday community this month:
Digital Island Meetup, November 6th
-----------------------------------
This week, Digital Media Island are having an event in conjunction with
Microsoft's launch of a new programme for startups. There will be a
couple of local mobile startups there, so please come and give them your
support. (And I believe there are free demo spots available for others
too)
These meetups (nee TechLudd) are always excellent.
The event starts at 6:30 this Thursday at Four Seasons Hotel in
Ballsbridge. More details and sign-up at: http://tinyurl.com/5egskg
Mobile Monday, November 17th
----------------------------
We're back to the usual Mobile Monday format later in the month, with a
dedicated event covering "Location Based Services (and Mobile Social
Networking)". For good reason, this is an exciting area of mobile
application development.
This seems to be something that Ireland is good at too. We'll have
Locle, JustRoutes, and Wubud all talking about the opportunities in this
space, and demoing their platforms.
Venue to be confirmed shortly (when we'll start taking sign-ups). But in
the meantime please pencil in your diaries for 17th November.
Best regards & see you all then,
James

Are you developing a mobile application with features that require data storage, sorting and retrieval?
Then you'll want to read about Carbon Hero, a UK- and Netherlands-based startup.
The company has developed an application in Java ME that rides along in your BlackBerry, Nokia Nseries or other smartphone, uses the built-in GPS to track your travel, and presents you with your personal "carbon footprint' or carbon emissions level.
To manage copious amounts of mapping and other data, all within the device's tight memory and storage constraints, Carbon Hero uses McObject's Perst Lite open source, object-oriented Java ME embedded database system.
For its efficiency, ease of use and small footprint, Carbon Hero's CTO calls Perst Lite "just what we need."
For more information about Carbon Hero and its use of Perst Lite, see McObject's writeup at:
Hi all,
Just a final reminder that it's Mobile Monday Dublin tonight, and the
topic is Mobile Voice Services.
Our awesome speaker roster is confirmed as:
- Catherine Hegarty;
the O2 Product Manager for Post-Pay Consumer Voice will cover trends
in services and usage, particularly in Ireland, from an operator's
perspective
- Andrew Fuller;
the CTO of Dublin's VoxPilot on what's happening in the industry
regarding IVR, video IVR and standardization
- Pat Phelan;
demo session from MAXRoam / Twitterfone / Cubic Telecom entrepreneur,
and renowned Cork blogger
Doors (and bar) at the Odessa Club, Dame Court open at 6:30pm. You'll
need to buzz and go up to the second floor. The sessions will start
promptly at 7pm, followed by food and friendly mobile networking until
they kick us out.
Again, many thanks to our sponsors Tiger Beer (for sponsoring the drink)
and dotMobi (for the food).
We have capacity for a handful more guests - if you or a colleague are
coming and have not yet let us know, please mail us this afternoon
(sept08@...), or simply leave a comment on the blog
(http://momodub.com).
(And if you previously registered and know you now can't come, please
also let me know, so I can juggle the last few places. Thanks.)
As ever, I look forward to seeing you all there!
James
Thanks for the note! Would you be able to let me know the cost
of the sponsorship please? Also, how many people attend the event?
Thanks again

Hi all,
Our event next Monday evening is filling up fast and looks set to be a
good one. Details & signup at http://momodub.com
We still have one sponsorship slot available. It's a great opportunity
for a local startup to get their name out into the Irish mobile space -
but larger benevolent companies also welcome :-)
It's a *very low* 4-figure-sum, at most, to cover the event's food.
Drink is already covered: Mobile Monday Dublin is purely an at-cost

future), please contact me directly. Many thanks.
