Hi Claire,
Thank you for your comments and for your support of your club and committee.
In an ideal world the AGM should only take about an hour. In the interests
of democracy, however, everyone is entitled to have their say regardless of
what they say and how they say it (unless it is obscene or offensive, of
course). I may not always agree with what is being said but it is my duty
as Chairman to ensure that they have opportunity to say it. Trying to
curtail members' more long-winded comments could potentially be perceived as
discriminatory.
Although this group is a good and useful place to discuss business and
politics, the official forum is the MRC's AGM as it is open to all members
regardless of whether they have access to a computer or not. It is
inevitable, therefore, that much is repeated on the day. It was hoped that
this group would help our members to hone their thoughts on the proposals to
enable more concise discussion at the AGM. Perhaps it did - we may have
been destined to be there until midnight! lol
I have taken your suggestion of a time limit for the discussion of each
proposal on board. Whilst a set time limit might be restrictive, it may, on
the other hand, help to keep members' comments focussed.
I am a big fan of common sense, so I am with you on that one too.
Unfortunately, for some, one man's common sense is another man's
skulduggery. That's democracy for you, I'm afraid. ;-)
Kind regards,
Graham
