(Jackie) So assuming there are only 10 voting members present and the
Committee
want to change a proposal's wording its the C'ttee plus one - hardly
democratic is it!
(Alison) Except, Jackie, that the MRC rules already state that there have to
be at least 16 voting members at an AGM to be quorate (i.e. at least as many
members as there are committee), to safeguard against just such an event. So
yes it is democratic, and we purposefully made the percentage of voting
members present high in order to stop any changes to which the vast majority
present did not agree. Whilst you seem to believe the purpose of this rule
is to allow an undemocratic committee to lord it over the membership (heaven
forbid!) the intention was simply to prevent occurances such as happend the
year when we discussed pregnant does attending shows, but despite everyone
at the meeting being in agreement, we couldn't change the wording slightly
and had to simply leave the club unprotected (or rather the pregnant does
unprotected) for another year. No-one wanted that. This rule would simply
allow that kind of choice, and proposals to be passed even where the members
present felt they needed a little tweaking. Indeed this proposal started out
life as part of a members' proposal which came unseconded. The committee
felt it was a worthy point and took it on board as a committee proposal.
