first thing, not an mrw44 gig but a last minute announcement /
reminder for tonight's gig at the Subway:
Brave Captain + Piney Gir + Blue States
doors 7.30pm, £7 on the door / £5 only for mailing-list members + one
accompanying person
BRAVE CAPTAIN:
Solo project of former Boo Radleys songwriter Martin Carr
Sweet, introspective pop songs interwoven with rich electronic
collages.

BLUE STATES:
Glorious retro-futurism and grand melancholia through the sublimely
subtle use of diverse blended ambient sounds.
The layers of strings and brass are stripped back to reveal something
darker and more personal. This ain't no soundtrack to an imaginary
film. Oh no. It's got tales of last nights and lost fights, visions
of wingless angels illuminated by the glow of a fruit machine in an
old man-pub and alien abductions across Scandinavia. It's the sound
of an inveterate optimistic being kicked in the teeth. Again.
Sonically, it hints at Talk Talk and pretty much anything on Factory
Records. Except the Railway Children of course.

PINEY GIR:
Piney presents her own individual brand of electronica jumbled with
accordions, melodicas, recorders, baby Casios and the hearty sounds
of analogue synth. A perfect blend of organic and synthetic sound.
Her rich, beautiful vocals are as refined and smooth as a roll of
silk but can give way at any time to frenzied yelps of discontent.
Her sound is often fractured and mysterious but always touched by a
sly sense of fun.
"She makes outsider music in a pop vein, and in doing so retains an
innocence that simply cannot be faked." Fact Magazine
"She certainly has a different grasp on pop, grafting country and
jazz influences on to a Casio-pop template" The Independent
