This weekend is my birthday (well just after midnight on Sunday 12th April), so
that's the occasion to celebrate over 2 days, with Oso playing both times.

For those who don't know Oso yet expect "stirring melodies, polyrhythms, soaring
counterlines, explosive drumming, hope
and despair all the way from California... Unicycling antics, inspiring
math-folk, "pentecostal revival fusion", "like watching a smart circus perform
to a progressive rock show volcanic eruption"...

Part 1 (the heavier part) is tonight at Henry's, from 8pm till 3am, and for
mailing-list members it's £4 only to get in (unless you personally got an
invite)

9pm - HIPPOCAMPUS - http://www.myspace.com/hippocampustheband
10pm - TIMOTHY C HOLEHOUSE - http://www.myspace.com/timothycholehouse
10.30pm - ELECTRIC MUD GENERATOR - http://www.myspace.com/electricmudgenerator
11.15pm - OSO - http://www.myspace.com/thebandoso
0.15am - THE INCENDIARY BATS - http://www.myspace.com/theincendiarybats
1.15am - JACKIE TREEHORN - http://www.myspace.com/jackietreehornmusic

Part 2 (the light fun part) is tomorrow (Sunday) at the GRV (37 Guthrie Street),
from 8pm till 1am, and it's £4 again, or £6 for a joint ticket for both days
(ask at the door tonight)

8.30pm - THE GORMS - http://www.myspace.com/thegorms
9.25pm - CAPTAIN PAP ARTIST - http://www.myspace.com/captainpapartist
10.20pm - RODENT EMPORIUM - http://www.myspace.com/rodentemporium
11.15pm - SUPER ADVENTURE CLUB - http://www.myspace.com/superadventuremusic
0.10am - OSO - http://www.myspace.com/thebandoso

Hope to see you at either of those (or both).

PETER WALKER + Rob Saint John + Horsebreaker
Sat 14th March at the GRV, 37 Guthrie Street, EH1 1JG
Doors 7pm (10pm finish), £6 / £5 if reserved in advance (to reserve tickets
please email us: axis (at) mrw44 dot co dot uk)

"Peter Walker was actually a bigger influence on my acoustic playing than John
Fahey or Robbie Basho" - Ben Chasny, Six Organs of Admittance

Performing in both styles in the LA caves:
http://dublab.com/visionversion?id=1703

The original guitar legend from the Sixties is alive and well, and playing more
than ever. A stunning fusion of Indian raga and Spanish flamenco guitar from a
Greenwich Village master. This is a very special opportunity to see this
legendary and highly influential American guitarist who recorded two pivotal
folk raga albums for the Vanguard label in the late Sixties and now inspires a
new generation of artists like Jack Rose and Ben Chasny. This is the second
phase for a majestic guitar hero.

A glut of new releases and reissues is accompanying Peter's reappraisal. US
label Tompkins Square managed to track him down and put out the tribute album A
Raga For Peter Walker in 2006, containing four newly recorded cuts in his
signature raga style, as well as six additional pieces by admirers like Jack
Rose, James Blackshaw, Steffen Basho-Junghans and Thurston Moore. Then in May
2008 came his first full LP for over 40 years, Echo of My Soul, a set of
Spanish-inspired pieces reflecting Peter's passion for flamenco and its Indian
roots.

Now, this November, Birdman Records are set to re-release the classic 1967 album
Rainy Day Raga, with liner notes from Ben Chasny. Long out of print, this was
Peter Walker's debut album, a gentle fusion of Eastern and Western musical
traditions, and one of the earliest examples of the folk raga style. This will
be followed in mid-February 2009 with two full length releases on Birdman - a
new flamenco set entitled Spanish Guitar, and Songs And Ragas from the 60's,
culled from much-coveted, long lost tapes on which Peter even sings.

As comebacks go, Peter Walker's is a story to rival Vashti Bunyan's. Rising to
prominence in the Cambridge MA and Greenwich Village folk scenes of the Sixties,
he studied with Ravi Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan, befriended Karen Dalton and
Sandy Bull, travelled to Franco Spain to study flamenco and was Dr. Timothy
Leary's musical director, organizing music for the LSD advocate's
'celebrations'.

Following his 1967 debut, a second album, Poem to Karmela or Gypsies Are
Important (1969) found Walker going even deeper into Indian instrumentation,
playing sarod and sitar. During this time, Peter played or was associated with
such musicians as Lowell George, Fred Neil, Tim Hardin, and Joan Baez, among
many others.

Walker settled in upstate New York in the early Seventies and more or less
dropped out of the public eye - marrying, having three kids and taking a variety
of jobs to support his family. Yet he continued to stretch himself musically,
studying flamenco technique and theory with a series of teachers. Through
regular trips to Spain, he has recently been accepted into the flamenco's
exclusive musical elite. A natural entertainer and story-teller, he toured the
UK and Spain in April to a rapturous reception.

Reminders (more info to follow in the next 24 hours):

Just a quick email to let you know that Anni Rossi (recently signed to

October), doors 8pm, £6 in or £5 for mailing list members.

She is touring with Rollin Hunt, and local support comes from Who's
Your Mama Now? and Horsebreaker.

"It's hard to know how to describe her. "Avant-folkie" sort of comes
close, as does "neo-classical singer songwriter with quirky voice".
Luckily the 22-year-old from Minnesota via Los Angeles has her own neat
tag for who she is and what she does: "I'm a classical kid, turned
viola-pop wunderkind", she says. [...] Imagine if Bjork hadbeen
captured after leaving the Sugarcubes and locked in a darkened room
with the viola player from the Brodksy Quartet. Rossi is that viola
player." The Guardian

Quick message to remind of 3 gigs not to be missed this week...

Highly recommended tonight (yet another sent this way by Julie
Tippex who previously sent us Zombie Zombie, Faust, So So Modern,
etc):
Marvin + Super Adventure Club + The Munchkins at Henry's, 8pm, £5 /
£4 for mailing-list members + friends

Marvin are a guitar-drums-keyboards three piece from Montpellier,
France. Marvin like to have fun, and want you to have some too.
Eschewing the pretence and po-facedness that so often seems to come
as part of the territory of DIY music, Marvin make blistering, noisy
and truly joyful pop. Pounding drums and walloping riffs are offset
by quirky, catchy analogue synth melodies, the result being
something akin to a heavierDevo, the poppiest moments ofLightning
Bolt or the tight, proggy silliness of Oxes or Trans Am. Vocals come
in the form of simple refrains, chants and yelps, which seem somehow
like the appropriate response to the primitive energy and joy
generated by three musicians bouncing playful melodies and rhythms
off each other. Throw in a bit of The Boredoms and Pere Ubu, and
you'll start to understand the fun you'll have here.
http://www.myspace.com/marvinband

Thursday (22nd May, still at Henry's) sees the return of Kunt and
the Gang, with support from the Plimptons, Schrodinger's Beard and a
a special 'rude & crude' dj set by Tall Paul.
http://www.myspace.com/kuntandthegang

Finally on Sunday (25th May, Henry's again), the return of bass /
drums duo Gatechien from France, with support from Jacob Flynch and
Okker.

Here's some more details about Skeletons and the Kings of All
Cities: Brooklyn-based freaky folk (file under Tortoise, Thee More
Shallow, Animal Collective or Xiu Xiu).

As a co-founding member of Shinkoyo records, Ohio-bred/Brooklyn-
based
Matt Mehlan retains that label's core ideals of collaboration,
experimentation, and unpredictability with his Skeletons project.
Beginning in Oberlin, Ohio as a solo act with help from an eclectic
cast of collaborators (classically-trained trombonists, punk rock
drummers, a junkyard boy's choir), Skeletons has now settled
comfortably into its adult body, having established a full-time band
[The Kings of All Cities] and an alliance with Ghostly.

http://www. myspace. com/skeletonsandthegirlfacedboys

If you can't come out tonight, The Low Lows will be playing live
tonight (Monday) on BBC 6Music's Tom Robinson show, which is between
7-9 pm GMT, you should really check them out if you don't know them
yet (and come and see them at the Ark tomorrow!)

It will likely happen in the first hour, so be sure to tune in early
if you want to catch it live. If you miss it, you can listen again
online.

Here is where to go to find the show: http://www. bbc. co.

The Low Lows: http://www.myspace.com/thelowlows
eagleowl: http://www.myspace.com/eagleowlattack
White Heath: http://www.myspace.com/themeditation
Mark Hunter

Doors are 8pm and it's a fiver in (or in case you missed it above,
joint ticket for the Low Lows and Skeletons and the Kings of All
Cities is only £7).

About The Low Lows:

Dark psychedelic Americana on Monotreme Records, formed from the
ashes of Parker and Lily.

"Deliciously dreamy and glowing in a wonderfully understated Galaxie
500 alt.country kind of way. Walls of gentle dissonance and country
narcosis and soothing gentle caressing white noise beauty and steel
guitars and Tindersticks and Yo La Tengo and a radiantly slow
rolling panorama that makes you so sure all is right. An almost
distant sound, a stark warm caressing beautiful sound, a rather
unique and rather special sound, and blue enough to float in,
drenched in deliciously subtle reverb and gently caressing
feedback." Organ Magazine

"primitive three-part harmony abounds, and steel guitar pervades
most tracks, but these elements are incongruously trapped in an
urban lo-fi noise-rock aesthetic like insects in amber. Nostalgia-
free, doleful & intensely modern, the primitive rawness of The Low
Lows is the natural product of an anachronistic environment, worried
not at all about being out-of-step with its time. Songs progress in
stately, off-kilter, dreamlike form, slow and deliberate, building
to explosive, gospel-tinged, triumphal climaxes -- hook-laden,
foundationed on distortion & embellished by brass."

This Sunday (21st October) come and check 12-string wizard Micah
Blue Smaldone who's come all the way from Portland, Maine, USA, and
is playing Henry's Cellar Bar (8 Morrison St, EH3 8BJ). Entry is £4
only for mailing-list members and friends (£5 otherwise).

There's a couple of tunes on his myspace page at
http://www.myspace.com/micahbluesmaldone, and he's even more amazing
live (some of you might have caught him at Henry's last year with
The Hub)... Support comes from The Bluesfather and Fiona Crawford (a
gal and her ukulele!), doors are 8pm and we'll start about 9pm, till
about 11.30pm / midnight.

Here's also one of the reviews of Micah Blue Smaldone's first album
(on Cerberus Shoal's label North East Indie), which should give you
a fair idea of what to expect:

"On his first solo CD, New England fingerpicker Micah Blue Smaldone
displays an impressive grasp of blues and ragtime guitar styles,
including the subtleties of melody and syncopation that elude many
players. Some Sweet Day is replete with guitar licks (played on a
Regal steel-bodied resonator) that should impress fans of
Mississippi John Hurt, John Jackson, Blind Boy Fuller, and Blind
Blake. Smaldone, who moonlights as a guitarist in several Boston
punk bands, wrote or arranged all but one of the CD's 14 tunes,
including "Across the Shore," modeled after Blake's blues playing in
the key of C, and the catchy instrumental rag "Ice Cream Socialist."
His rather mannered singing seems patterned after 1920s jazz
vocalists, minstrels, and songsters like Jimmie Rodgers. It's
startlingly old-fashioned and would be more jarring if Smaldone
didn't pull it off with such grace and depth of feeling." Ian Zack -
Acoustic Guitar magazine

Another gig not to be missed next week, for those who are into synth-
driven heavy rock, Liverpool outfit Kling Klang
(http://www.myspace.com/superposition) are playing at The Ark (3-7
Waterloo Place, East End of Princes St) next Friday (26th October),

Quick message to let you know that Stafraenn Hakon are back tonight,
playing at Henry's on Morrison St, here's the details:

Fri 12th October, doors 7.30pm (early start!) till 10pm, £5 / £4 for
members and friends and families and pets

Stafraenn Hakon + Keser + The Foundling Wheel

Once described as "frequently mesmerizing, seamlessly interwoven
combination of electronica and ambient guitar.." by the legendary
Wire magazine, Stafręnn Hįkon (Iceland, on the Resonant Label) has
indeed through the last 8 years been described as a mix of post-
rock, lo-fi, ambient guitar & electronica. The Icelandic born Ólafur
Josephsson has been recording music since 1999 under the name
Stafręnn Hįkon (sometimes stafraenn hakon, stafrann hakon) which has
often confused the media, due to the confusing Icelandic origin.

http://www.shakon.com

Other gigs of interest coming up (more info soon, but put them down
in your diary now!), all at Henry's unless specified:
Micah Blue Smaldone on Sun 21st October
Kling Klang, Titus Gein and Eunoia on Fri 26th October (at The Hive
tbc)
The Chap on Tue 6th November (at The Ark)
Sunburned Hand of the Man on Mon 12th November
White Mice and DJ Scotch Egg on Wed 14th November
The Sandals of Majesty and gasgiant on Thu 15th November
Higgs Giovando on Mon 19th November

Yup, that's a lot! Gotta go for now but hopefully see you soon...

A quick message from a weird computer, two gigs not to be missed this
weekend, and some special offers.

Saturday 9th June, at the Bongo Club, 7pm - 10pm
FAUST + MICHAEL FLOWER & CHRIS CORSANO

Tickets are still available for this from the usual places, and
mailing-list members can get them for £10 each directly from us,
please email me at axis@... if you want tickets reserved or
come along to tomorrow's gig at Henry's to get them...

Cos tomorrow is the other BIG gig of the weekend, or should I say of
the year, with my favourite singer in the world, favourite bassist /
guitarist in the world and favourite drummer in the world all together
on the same bill...

mrw44 presents -

CARLA BOZULICH + RASHOMON + CARLA BOZULICH & CHRIS CORSANO DUO

Fri 8th June at Henry's, doors 8pm, £5 on the door OR £3 only if you
have a valid ticket or reservation for FAUST at the Bongo Club the
following day (if you haven't got one yet, as I said above you can get
tickets directly from us at Henry's tomorrow night, and at a reduced
price!).

After the show on Friday 8th June you can also stay for the rest of
the night at Henry's and watch the following bands between midnight
and 3am: The Nukes, Sara and The Snakes, Beltane Drummers

CARLA BOZULICH is best known as the singer from LA-based band
Geraldine Fibbers and as the woman who re-made Willie Nelson's "Red
Headed Stranger" - with Willie Nelson as a special guest.

Carla has one of the most unique voices in any genre. Her work is at
once brutally raw and weirdly visionary. Her latest album
"Evangelista" was recorded with chums from Godspeed! You Black
Emperor, A Silver Mount Zion, Black Ox Orkestar, Gowns, The Mae-Shi,
The Night Porter and Secret Chiefs and came out on Constellation
Records in 2006. It has been described as "an evisceration of still
sparking, tangled nerve ends and emotions" (The Wire).

http://www.carlabozulich.com

RASHOMON is the new solo project of ex-Guapo bassist and founder
member Matt Thompson.

Forthcoming album "The Ruined Map : Film Music Volume 1", which he
recorded using a multitude of instruments (organ, bass, harmonium,
guitar, minimoog, mellotron, zither, percussion, bowed psaltery,
fender rhodes, voice), is a bewildering mix of prog rock, electronic
noise, waltzes, East European folk, trad metal, drones, psych rock and
free jazz, similar in intention to soundtrack visionaries such as Toru
Takemitsu and Ennio Morricone.

His live set revolves around solo guitar and guitar loops, variously
reminiscent of the works of Loren Connors, Popol Vuh, Keiji Haino or
Tutuzi Akiyama.

http://www.myspace.com/rashomon68

CARLA BOZULICH & CHRIS CORSANO duo
When drumming genius Chris Corsano joins Carla Bozulich onstage you
can expect anything! Loose-limbed, intense, even melodic, Chris
Corsano exposes the audience to sounds and rhythms that defy
normality. A kinetic show of eye-popping quality that features Chris's
unsurpassable free-form drumming, hand built wind instruments,
semi-composed sections, heavy keyboard moments and beautifully quiet
near-silences. Dramatic and considered…this is a border-crossing
display of musicality.

Recently Chris has collaborated with many other musicians such as
Keiji Haino, Paul Flaherty, Michael Flower (Vibracathedral Orchestra),
John Olston (Wolf Eyes), Comets On Fire, Sunburned Hand Of The Man and
Kim Gordon.

Tonight is Ostinato, Eunoia and Hey Enemy at Henry's, hope you can
come along... Also, in case you or anyone you know had tickets for
Explosions In The Sky in Glasgow tonight, it's now been postponed,
very last minute affair, check the promoter's website for details of
a rescheduled date (www.synergyconcerts.com), and that also means
you can come to Ostinato instead...

OSTINATO (US, Exile on Mainstream Records): instrumental post-
metal / math / post-rock trio led by former Hidden Hand drummer
David Hennessy: "pursued as a passion to create and explore sound we
try to form our melodic pieces like daydreams or short stories..."
http://www.myspace.com/ostinatospace

EUNOIA: new prog-math from Edinburgh well worth checking out (and it
is also the new band mic from gasgiant plays in)
http://www.myspace.com/eunoiatheband

HEY ENEMY: loud heavy trio at times sludgy, at times energetic, you
won't be bored... they even play a didgeridoo, woo...
http://www.myspace.com/heyenemy

Tuesday 17th April at Henry's, doors 8pm, first band on 9pm, £4 for
friends and their own friends, etc, spread the word...

Also, this Saturday sees the return of Thee More Shallows, who were
previously on Monotreme Records but recently got signed to
Anticon... Here's the details:

Sat 21st April at Henry's, doors 8pm, £5 / £4 for members / friends
etc
Thee More Shallows + North Atlantic Oscillation + The Red Well
Delicate post-pop songs and huge atmospherics from San Francisco's
THEE MORE SHALLOWS:
http://www.myspace.com/theemoreshallows
http://www.anticon.com
http://www.myspace.com/naoband
http://www.myspace.com/theredwell

Afterwards we've also got the return of our local faves A2M for what
has almost become a monthly Saturday night residency, this time
accompanied by the Conflict Diamonds for special redneck band
madness...

"A2M's fusion of rock, pop and country produces an exciting and
unpredictable sound that is both as pleasing as oral sex and as
infectious as herpes". Errr, yes, as they say.

Anyway, that's also on Saturday from midnight onwards, and if you've
been to see Thee More Shallows beforehand you can just stay for the
rest of the night without having to pay in again.

If that's not enough fun for you this week, you can also check other
listings of what's on at Henry's at
http://www.myspace.com/henrysvenue in the blog section, and keep
watching this space for some yet more exciting news which might be
confirmed (or not) in the next week or two.

Quick post while I'm still awake, it's my birthday tomorrow (12th
April) and there's 3 bands well worth catching I'm putting on at
Henry's:

NED: all the way from France, and they have a song called 44, which
I really like (the song itself, and also the fact that it's called
44), you can listen to them here: http://www.myspace.com/nedskrecords

JACOB FLYNCH: you know the score probably, livingstonia madness etc,
http://www.myspace.com/jacobflynchmusic

VILAIN: a new crazy band made up of French people exiled in
Edinburgh, and they're not on Myspace so you'll have to come and
check them out for yourself.

Vilain will be on first around 9pm, and usual timings for the rest,
£4 only for you + friends (£5 otherwise), but if you just want to
briefly pop in for birthday drinks and that before or after the
bands it's still cool I'll let you in, or if you wanna see the bands
and are really really skint I can probably work out some special
deal, so ask just in case...

There will probably be a few French folk and Livi folk about but
don't let that intimidate you, they're not quite as bad as I make
it... I mean they can bite pretty easily but probably not tomorrow
cos it's my birthday and they promised to try and be nice...

Also, if you're looking for something to do tonight, I recommend the
Sebastian Fors gig at Henry's, only £2 for mailing-list members
instead of the normal £4, full details and links on the Henry's
myspace listings at http://www.myspace.com/henrysvenue in the BLOG
section, there's also tickets up for grabs for various gigs
including mrw44 gigs so get in touch if interested.

Next is Ostinato, Eunoia, and Hey Enemy on Tuesday (17th April),
more about that shortly... And for those who asked, the big
unconfirmed gig finally got confirmed, put it in your diaries right
now: Faust at the Bongo Club, Sat 9th June, more about that soon
too, and discount tickets as well...

Hopefully see you tomorrow anyway...

Right, just a quick one, lots of things to catch up with, sorry for
the late notice, it's all about tonight...

A choice of various activities to juggle with tonight:

I shall be at the Subway for the start of the night for
Abdoujaparov, A2M and Schrodinger's Beard (see flyer at
http://www.flickr.com/photos/raphaelburden/429406792), then at
Henry's till very very late...

It's Mandy's night at Henry's (Super Adventure Club, Voice of the
Mysterons and Indafusion), but afterwards I've added French band
Headcases (www.myspace.com/headcases), it's the other band the
bassist from Gatechien plays in, and they'll be playing some time
after midnight, and it will cost you only £1 if you've been at the
Subway beforehand and can prove it by showing us your dirty stamp
(or you can just stay in if you've been at Mandy's gig, although a
£1 donation would be appreciated, it all goes to the band).

Actually, make that £1 for anyone who is on the mailing-list...

Oh and next time I might have some really fantastic news, but I'm
getting a bit carried away as it's not all confirmed yet... Just
watch this space, if it does get confirmed it will be absolutely
immense... like the biggest thing I've ever had... Take a guess?
Who's in the UK in June?

That's where you should be this weekend:

Human Traffikers + Lords of Bastard + Hey Enemy at Henry's on Sunday

A night for droners and stoners, with a wee bit of rocking thrown into
the mix...
Check the bands out if you don't know them yet, they're all in Henry's
Cellar Bar's myspace top friends (head over at

Hey Enemy even play a didgeridoo on stage (and feature members from
Dead Or American)...

Also, for those who haven't got any plans yet for tonight (Fri 26th)
and read this in time, it's not our gig but that's where I'll be since
Henry's is closed closed for a private function, so I recommend you
too head out to the Subway Cowgate to check out my personal faves Arse
2 Mouth, who are playing alongside Lazyhand and the Farce Bandits,
starts at 8pm, and finishes by 10.30pm, so you still have time to do
other stuff after, and I personally guarantee it's the best start you
could have to your night... Come on, as they say, "it's dirty, and you
love it".

More gig news shortly, currently busy confirming details for a lot of
touring bands, including Troubles (20th Feb), The Low Lows (12th

For those who get to read this in time, why don't you join Nora,
myself and much of the usual crew tonight in our last minute rescue
of Henry's Hogmanay celebrations...

Don't have much time, but I'll paste details below, and maybe see
you there???

Claire

"Yes, we're open from 10pm till very late and we're giving power to
the people!

We will give a few bands the opportunity to play short sets if they
want, no more than 3-4 songs each, and ask them to ideally include a
cover of a famous (and preferably entertaining) song. So please send
us an email if you're up for it (henrysvenue at googlemail.com ONLY,
even if you normally use a differrent address to get in touch with
us, we will check that address regularly tomorrow up till 7pm, and
please no phone calls!) and we'll get back to you with confirmation
and details (please include a phone number so we can get in touch if
you ain't gonna be checking your messages again). Or you can just
turn up on the night and we'll see, but can't completely guarantee
you a slot if you haven't been in touch beforehand.

We'll provide backline (please don't bring your own as there won't
be much time for changeovers, and not much space to store it either)
and instruments if needed (just bring you own sticks, also spare
strings might be useful if you have any just in case), and you
should be prepared to jump onstage and play without a proper
soundcheck, so we can't really accommodate bands with a complicated
set-up, sorry...

Later on, if enough people are up for it, we're hoping this will
turn into a huge jam session, or, even better, a full band karaoke:
we'll welcome anyone who is confident (or drunk) enough to come
forward, grab a bass, a guitar, a mic or sit behind the drums and
start playing (murdering) rock and cheese classics.

Anyone up for playing the Final Countdown just before the bells???

Also, if there's anything you'd like to hear, we encourage members
of the audience to bring a CD along and ask the dj to play their
favourite song (no self-promotion please, try and choose things that
other people are likely to know and enjoy and maybe dance to).

Anyway, as I said, power to the people, and hope you can join us...

Any questions, suggestions, etc, please use the address above...

Oh and how much does it cost to get in? As little as £4 if you've
got the exact change or a fiver, or £5 if you pay with a tenner or
twenty quid note (or £50 if all you have is a £50 note!). We just
like people with the right change, makes our life easier... Or even
free entry if you're one of the bands who've arranged to play a few
songs."

A busy week ahead, with the last gigs of the year for us (well needed
break after that, well sort of...).

First, in case you read this in time, a reminder for tonight:
I HAD AN INKLING + SERFS + DENNEHY IS EVERYTHING
Thu 23rd Nov at Henry's, 8pm, £5 / £4 for mailing-list members +
friends

I had An Inkling (Leeds) play an aggressive math-rock/post-punk-prog
melange and hook-laden, agit-pop. Serfs are 2-guitar improv from down
South, have played with the likes of Chris Corsano and more...
Check them out at http://www.myspace.com/ihadaninkling and

Tue 28th Nov at Henry's, 8pm, £5 / £4 for mailing-list members
KUNT AND THE GANG + ARSE 2 MOUTH + SCHRODINGER'S BEARD
Still miss Special Love? Well, you won't after that night... Take the
spirit of Special Love but even more outrageous, even more
entertaining, and generally better (you still reading this, exiled
Special Love member?)
http://www.myspace.com/kuntandthegang
Bit of a rush and can't remember the others' pages, but they can all
be found on Henry's Cellar top friends at
http://www.myspace.com/henrysvenue

Kunt and the Gang are also playing at Bloc in Glasgow the following
night (Wed 29th), it's free entry (donations very welcome though!),
and they just got squeezed in at the last minute on an existing bill,
so they'll be on in the middle, about 10pm, between The Martial Arts
and The Vivians. If you're around Glasgow, you need to go to that, and
help spread the word please...

Finally, Thu 30th Nov back at Henry's, 8pm, £$
DRAGGING AN OX THROUGH WATER + EAGLEOWL + LES ENFANT BASTARD
Dragging An Ox is Brooklyn based Brian Mumford, who plays noisy folk-
pop. "warm and buzzy pop with a great combination of lo-fi finger
picked acoustic guitar, beautiful synth harmonies, and a great melody"

We've got a couple of gigs not to be missed this week.

Tomorrow (Tuesday 7th Nov) at Henry's, 8pm, £4
MANATEES + GASGIANT + one tbc (last minute suggestions welcome!)

MANATEES have an album just out on Motivesounds but are a lot
heavier and slower than your average Motivesounds band. They
describe their sound as "crushing highs meeting devastating low ends
with a placid calm under-current running throughout". You can check
them out here: http://www.myspace.com/manateetheband
GASGIANT: for those who don't know yet:
http://www.myspace.com/gasgiant

Then Friday sees the return of our favourite French nutters
Gatechien, this time accompanied by another French band, Le Singe
Blanc.

Friday 10th November at Henry's, 8pm, £4 for mailing-list members +
friends
GATECHIEN + LE SINGE BLANC + JACOB FLYNCH

GATECHIEN - bass + drums + vocals + screaming math-rock / post-punk
duo. http://www.myspace.com/gatechien
"Gātechien's music is raw, stark and harshly compelling.
Bassist/singer Laurent Paradot torturously carves out leads while
spewing agonized grunts, groans and syllables that don't sound like
words in any language, or occasionally humming along with his own
bass parts. Drummer Florian Belaud's complex beats make up in energy
for what they sometimes lack in precision; he and Paradot have
enough rapport that a third band member would be unnecessary. The
songs are disjointed in structure but flow intriguingly from one
dark melody to another. If they were more polished or polite,
Gātechien might be just another math-rock band, noteworthy only for
their lack of guitar - but the brutal vocal antics alone would keep
them from putting anyone to sleep. For an overall impression of
Gātechien, a bad translation of one opinion about the duo is quite
apt: "This group is likely to put a good slap to you". "
Splendidezine
LE SINGE BLANC - twin-bass post-punk attack from France (pretty
close to where I'm from too) http://www.myspace.com/lesingeblanc
JACOB FLYNCH - one of the most exciting bands in Edinburgh at the
moment, check them out here http://www.myspace.com/jacobflynchmusic

Hope to see you at those gigs, and please help spread the word...
It seems the previous mail-out didn't work but if it did sorry if
you received this twice...

8pm, £7.50 in adv. / £9 on the door
Tickets from Ticketweb, Ripping Records, Tickets Scotland, and

CARLA BOZULICH (Los Angeles, US) is best known as the singer from
Geraldine Fibbers and as the woman who re-made Willie Nelson's "red
headed stranger" - with Willie Nelson as a special guest. Carla has
on of the most unique voices in any genre. Her work is at once
brutally raw and weirdly visionary. Carla's new album is a
devastating, elegiac, brutally honest song cycle that finds her
voice unleashed with uprecedented emotive depth and determination. A
heartrending, gutwrench of an album, where isolation and desperation
are redeemed by incantatory sonics and out-reaching , soul-saving
lyrics. It was recorded with chums from Godspeed! You Black Emperor,
A Silver Mount Zion, Black Ox Orkestar, Gowns, Mae-Shi, The Night
Porter and Secret Chiefs.

HRSTA (Montreal, Canada) is the brainchild of Mike Moya, one of the
founding members of Godspeed you! black emperor and involves members
of A Silver Mt. Zion, Sackville, Hangedup, Jackie-o-Motherfucker,
Set Fire To Flames… Hrsta harnesses traditional and otherworldly
sound as Moya sings lyrics cribbed from lost faerie tales in a voice
that recalls a more blissed-out Daniel Johnson or a less blissed-out
Wayne Coyne.

CHRIS CORSANO (Massachussetts, USA):
Solo percussion from this inventive drumming genius who has also
played with people such as Paul Flaherty, Thurston Moore, Jessica
Rylan, Jim O'Rourke, Mick Flower, Jandek, Six Organs of Admittance,
Evan Parker, Sunburned Hand Of Man, Wally Shoup, Keiji Haino,
Vampire Belt, Heather Leigh Murray.

"drummer Chris Corsano, a young free player who already looks like
becoming the most significant and syntactically advanced
percussionist to come out of the free rock/jazz nexus. His playing
is so exuberant and explosively alive that it transcends any kind of
responsive playing, inhabiting instead a sublime zone where pure
energy spontaneously gives birth to form." - David Keenan, The Wire

Yasss!... We've finally managed to get Noxagt to play in Edinburgh,
this was just confirmed a couple of days ago, and it's happening
this Wednesday (20th September) at Henry's Cellar Bar, doors 8pm,
£5 / £4 for mailing-list members. This is really short notice, so
please help spread the word...

NOXAGT (Norway, Load Records): pummeling instrumental sludge
check www.myspace.com/noxagt for music or www.loadrecords.com

+ LORDS OF BASTARD: local stoner dinosaur wizards
+ more tbc

Also worth mentioning, this weekend sees the Scottish Hobo Society
return to Henry's Cellar Bar, on a Saturday this time, with live
entertainment from the TRUTH ROCKETS (comedy surf and silly rock)
and THE CONFLICT DIAMONDS (texan trucker disco-rock), plus the
world's pinkest and drunkest alt. disco djs... So if you're up for
some fun and silliness, please come along this Saturday (16th),
11pm - 3am, £5 in or £3 only for mailing-list members plus unlimited
number of friends... What else is there to do on a Saturday anyway???

Also, next Saturday (23rd) is the big return of our club night now
called TRIUMPH! with a victory rock tag team between dj Dugstar and
John Quo, and a healthy dose of cheese and silliness from dj Carl
Cok celebrating his birthday. All this for £1 only for mailing-list
members and their friends (£4 otherwise). What else could you ask
for?

Hope to see you at one of these or all of these ideally...
