Push it harder? If its an inertia switch does it come out after a shunt or bump? Hence perhaps it needs a shunt or bump to go back in!??! I am only guessing...

The switch has to be closed to allow the pump to run. If you unplug the switch then the switch is open and the fuel pump doesnt run. You need to short out pins...
