Don't know the area for cross country skiing, but I do know that Sergei Chepikov, former Soviet team biathlon&cross country is an aquaitance of Mike Dixon. Mike may know of some skiing areas there, or could perhaps find out from Mr Chepikov. See Cairgorm Biathlon club site for mike's details.

Hello

I will be going to work in Kazakhstan soon, in Atyrau on the Caspian
Sea. I know that it gets very cold (-30 or less) and there is snow,
