Record after Record tumbling, competitors from as far afield as London, together
with the Army and Royal Air Force Biathletes, the GB Nordic Squad and Club skiers
from both Huntly and CBNSC, some terrific rollerski racing and even a beautiful
day to round things off. A very good day! Being the Scottish Rollerski
Championships this year we had even arranged for a very good local young piper,
Scott Hay to play at the Start and Presentation and we were also delighted to
have the Chairman of Snowsport Scotland to present the Trophies and Medals.

We will publish the results of the race as soon as possible but in the meantime
if you would like to see photos of the racing today and yesterday you can find
them on the CBNSC website (see Links) or click on the following:

A very wet start to Saturday but it did not stop the racing and by the end of
the morning we had seen some terrific racing across all age groups and levels of
ability. We will put the results out for you all to see just as soon as
possible but if you would like to see a full selection of photographs from the
day, go to the CBNSC website at www.cbnsc.co.uk and click on the GALLERY page or
the link on the News Section at the right hand side of the page. Tomorrow we
move on to the Cairngorm Hill Climb with entires already received from as far
South as London and also from the GB Nordic Squad, the Armed Forces and Huntly
as well as CBNSC. We will keep our fingers crossed for a drier event than on
the last two occasions but it should be a great day, so if you are free why not
come along and see some of the very best of British Nordic Skiing on show?
Racing starts at 9.30 and goes on until around 12.30 with a Presentation
afterwards at the Cairngorm Mountain T-Bar in the Day Lodge. More details and
timings available on the CBNSC website.

I received this message & entry form for a LNRSC rollerski race on 10th May at
Hayes. Their race calendar is in Files section.

"Dear Roller Ski Racers

As I hope you will be aware, our roller ski race season opens in less
than 2 weeks with the 15k free technique race at Hayes. The British
Nordic Ski Team will be there so it will be an opportunity to see how
you measure up to our international competitors. Andrew Musgrave and
others will be talking about their recent achievements and experiences
on the World Cup circuit and at the World Championships, and their
plans for the future and the Olympics. An instruction course is taking
place on the same day. See website for details.

The race will be open to all FIS compliant rollerskis, so expect to see
some high speed action. There is plenty of room on the Hayes circuit so
skiers wanting to take a more leisurely pace are equally welcome. A
7.5km option will be available as well.

If you can let me know of your entry in advance it helps the
organisation on the day and saves you money. If you are entering on the
day you need to turn up in good time (2pm for a 3pm start) and be a
member of an SSE affiliated club.

This year, in response to demand, there will be medals or prizes to be
won, and all competitors will receive a certificate.

See you at the races

At Pello, Finland two more British skiers achieved the World Cup qualification
standard for next season. Callum Smith & Simon Platt join Andrew Musgrave,
Andrew Young & Alex Standen as British World Cup qualified skiers. Platt is from
England the Lakeland X/C SC and the other four are Scottish based from the
Huntly Nordic SC.

The results can be seen at
http://www.fis-ski.com/uk/604/1228.html?event_id=25528&cal_suchsector=CC

And there are reports at the British Team website:
http://www.britnordicteam.co.uk/

This year Musgrave & Young became the first British skiers to ski at a World Cup
race in 15 years. We now have 5 skiers qualified with more skiers getting close
to the standard. What makes this even more remarkable is that all are juniors
(U21) & Young & Smith are only 17.

At a 10km FT race at Tornio in Finland today (10th Apr) another British skier
achieved the standard to be eligible for a World Cup start next season. Alex
"Iagy" Standen scored 111.17 FIS pts which is below the 120 required. Alex joins
the other British World Cup skiers Andrew Musgrave & Andrew Young.

What is also very encouraging that there are several other British skiers (men &
women) now approaching the World Cup qualification standard. There are more
races in Finland over the next few days where they might be able to achieve it.

11:00am, 29th March.

The trails are just about skiable with around 4cm snow on most trails. Snow is
deeper on Haute Route. Definately a day for old skis as you will scratch your
bases on stones but there are sections of good skiing.

It won't last long.

Hi Pete

I have taught snowboarding and recommend wrist guards for learners. The best ones I have used are made by Salomon. They give a degree of protection (only). The best safeguard is to take at least one lesson from a qualified instructor who will help you to avoid falls (though this may still occur) and show you how to fall safely.

Whilst a roller skier might benefit from a guard they might hinder proper poling actions. Again, the best safeguard is to take a lesson from a properly qualified instructor and be shown how to fall. It is worth remembering that the best and safest option is not to fall at all. There are no happy landings on tarmac. So choose a safe area to practice and use rollers that are suitable.

I have been asked a question about whether wrist guards give any protection from falls while rollerskiing? I don't really know the answer but was giving this link to a study done with snowboarders:

http://www.ski-injury.com/prevention/wrist_guards

The person asking fractured their wrist rollerskiing & is wanting to start again. I assume the wrist guards would hinder holding poles. If they are useful what type is best? Would learning to fall, i.e. not extending your arm, be a better option?

Any comments would be appreciated.

I saw this news item today where the Forestry Commission are warning
cross-country skiers to stay away from forests because the snow may
cause trees to fall.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/north_east/7876527.stm

The nature of our sport means we head into the forests when there is
snow. I hope they are not saying we can only go into forests when there
is no snow! Please take heed of the warnings, but really! it is bit
like saying don't drive a car because you may have an accident.

Please reply to this thread if you encounter restrictions or have any
problems accessing forests.
