Hi all,
We will be running a session on Wednesday 6th Dec at 7:00 pm at
Aberdeen University, Kings College to teach those who are interested
how to teach on and run SDC's. It is open to all with an interest in
instructing whether yet qualified or not.
The aims of the session are to introduce you to the organisation and
format of Skill Development Courses as well as how to get involved
teaching on Regional events with the Coaching Team and/or running 'in
house' courses, how to become an Approved Instructor for those
courses that require it, etc, as well as to answer any questions you
may have about SDC's. There will also be a tutorial-type session
where you will work in groups to consider some of the
issues/challenges/planning aspects involved with running certain
SDC's.
Please pass on to anyone you think may be interested. There is no
charge for this event.
Anyone interested in attending should drop me an email to
scotland.north.coach@... .
Cheers!

Attention all Advanced Divers!
Bored after the Christmas holidays? Looking for a new challenge?
...Then why not consider doing First Class Diver?
Go on you know you want to! ;o)
We have a group of keen individuals from across the Region, some
looking to take the exam this year, some next year and some who are
considering it at some point in the future, who are looking to run
some First Class Diver prep sessions.
If you would like to take part, or even if you are not sure if you
want to do First Class but would like to find out what it is all
about then please drop me an email and we can include you in the
group. These prep sessions will also be useful for anyone considering
Advanced Instructor so I'd also like to hear from anyone considering
this too.
If you would like to get involved or would just like to know more,
please drop me an email at scotland.north.coach@...
Also have a look at http://www.bsac.org/page/92/first-class-diver.htm
Cheers!
Dave
:o)
Hello all.
At the regional coaching meeting Dave Roberts and I (Kenny Reay)
volunteered to co-ordinate some Advanced diver lessons and sessions
for willing participants.
If you have anyone in your region/club who is ready for AD then let
me know and I'll add their names to my list. Let me know your branch
locality.
So far we have 6 names, all from the Aberdeen region but we are
looking to do the course locally in other areas too.
These pages give a little more info on the course:
http://www.bsac.org/page/273/advanced-diver.htmhttp://www.bsac.com/comediving/advdiver.htmlhttp://www.ukdivers.net/bsac/advanced.htm
Hope to hear from you soon.
We hope to start the session quite soon, if we can arrange suitable
dates to get everyone together.
Thanks
Kenny
Below is a rough starting point for our plan, from Dave Sydenham, to
give you an idea of the timescales etc.
"The way we ran the Advanced Diver Course last time was to arrange an
evening per Theory Lesson plus two evenings for Lesson AP1 Expedition
Planning. The practical lessons need to really be organised as and
when people can manage. AP2 is the hardest to organise for obvious
reasons, including the requirement for an AI for the weekend. 5-6
Weeks should see the Theory done though we could look at organising
an intensive day over a weekend possibly."
Ah the enthusiasm of youth. When I get my DL signed
off eventually I shall rest on my laurels, frankly
can't be arsed to go any higher!!
Boat sounds good.

The North Scotland Instructor Foundation Course is scheduled for the
10th/11th March in Portlethen near Aberdeen. There will also be a
Theory Instructor Exam running over the same weekend.
Please book onto either event by contacting Central Bookings at BSAC HQ
either via http://www.bsac.org/page/301/instructor-training.htm
or by calling 0151 350 6209. Please have your membership number to hand
when calling.
Anyone considering this, please book as soon as possible to ensure that
the event does go ahead. There will not be another one this year.
Please spread the word.
Many thanks
Dave
Dear All,
I wonder if you could be so kind as to forward this on to anybody who
would be suitable for this job.
I am looking for an enthusiastic, friendly guide for marine wildlife
day trips and dive charters in the Firth of Lorne area (Argyll). You
must enjoy working with people, and be confident speaking in front of
groups of up to 12 people. The work would be varied, also involving
general crewing duties (including cleaning and maintenance) and
various administrative tasks.
Applicants should have a background in marine biology or similar, and
have good basic IT skills. You need to be fit and enjoy working on a
boat in all weathers! Own transport is essential.
The post will be part-time ( a minimum of 27 hours per week, but
expected to be more) through the spring, with increase to very full-
time through the summer. The job is likely to start in March 2007 and
finish at the end of November. I would also be interested in anybody
in their final year who could start in june.
Although diving is not part of the job there will be opportunities
for private diving.
Please reply with CV to the email address below.
Sealife-Adventures is a charter boat running 2-5 hour wildlife and
whale watching trips out of Balvicar (approx 15 miles\30 mins south

Hi all,
I had a great response from people saying they wished to book on this
event, however to date only 5 people have, which is not sufficient to
make this course viable. Can I ask if you are interested and have not
already booked then please do so as soon as possible via HQ, as we will
have to make the decision whether to cancel or not by the end of this
week. Please pass this on and encourage as many as possible to attend.
It will be the only IFC event this year so if it has to be cancelled
then there will not be another.
Thanks
Dave
There must be people out there who want a shot of pure O2 to wake them
up after a hard Friday night!
If so come along to the Aberdeen O2 Administration SDC on March 17th.
All you need to do is drop me an e-mail, its so easy.
Cheers

Please could you highlight the fact to your local club members that
the Boat Handling course in Moray is nearly upon us - of which I need
to impose a booking deadline of Tue 20th March for confirmed
numbers. - to date I have one student.
I am away from the 23rd until 5th April - so need to get organized.
The venue will be somewhere between Findhorn / Lossie area,
Clubs will need to supply there own RIBs, ( we can accommodate over
night storage for the RIB's if the club insurance is valid) - and
dependant upon numbers, I will also be looking for assistance for
instructors.
many thanks

Since I guess all BSAC clubs in the Aberdeen area will get this, I wonder if each club could nominate one or two contact email addresses to disseminate any info relevant to all local clubs. The lists that we have used in the past are currently very out of date.
This was prompted by an inquiry from Jason (of Watersports) about whether anyone was organising this year's Solstice diving in Millshore. I sent an email round using an old circulation list but I don't know how many clubs it will reach.
Therefore, if someone from each local club could either email this list or myself, we can then put together a more up to date circulation list and then people can just "reply to all" or whatever.
Cheers (and sorry for this fairly wide-circulation email!)

The uni-club will be in attendance as usual, with as many people as we can bring along [usualy 20 or so]. is there anything the club could do? we have numbers and plenty of willing [when i have spoken to them] hands
dave
oh..and contacts, this one for the uni-club will work and i think at least 1 or 2 others are on thsi list too
If you didn't know, new regulations indicate that cylinder will need to have differant pillar valves for nitrox & tmx - therefore regs will need adapting etc
Hello All.
Does anyone know if the portaloos are definitely booked, and the farmer
informed of our impending descent upon his land?
I'm happy to contact the farmer if anyone has his details.

Hi Malcolm
Excellent!
Rowan was a bit worried. Apparently the farmer accosted her last year! That
would have been fun to see.
For money what do you want to do? Rowan thought there was a central fund,
but could we do a raffle or something to raise more funds if needed. Or AWL,
or Chris at Banff for some sponsorship?
I've no idea where the money comes from, sorry; didn't even know until a few
days ago that there was any involved!

Personaly i would be thinking along the lines of 'ask AWL'. they have had a lot of advertising through the solstice meet every year, so maybe they can pay part of it
after that... a bucket, a few people and 30 mins to ask everyone there to contribute 50p or 1 pound....just needs a few people to do it..oh, yeah, students

Some of you may not know this but there should be some funds (around £700) left over from a couple of ceilidhs we organised several years ago, as a common fund for the local dive clubs. Aberdeen SAC have been keeping these funds in their account. AWL have paid for the portaloos each year, which is quite nice of them (publicity or not) so any extras (e.g. money to the farmer) should come out of the common fund, which should be enough to keep this going for a few more years. I don't know how much dosh the farmer is getting nowadays - the first year, which I organised, he was initially happy with the bottle of malt we gave him but when he saw the number of people who turned up, he started making "money noises" (talking about the equivalent of a pound per car). In any case, I don't think there is a need for anyone circulating a bucket this year, at least while there is money in the common fund!

Hi all,
Just a reminder of the forthcoming Open Water Instructor Course to be
held at Lochaline on 15th September and also the Practical and Theory
Instructor exams to be held at the same venue on the 16th September.
Currently there are no takers for the course and unless we get enough
people to make the course viable it will be cancelled so please do
not delay and if you wish to attend please book now.
You should book via HQ - see http://www.bsac.org/page/81/instructor-
training.htm
Those attending either event are welcome to stay over for the other
day and go diving or get some extra last minute practice for the exam.
We will also be running a PIE Prep session on Saturday 1st September.
This is an opportunuty for those considering attending the exam to
practice lessons along with their peers and have the opportunity to
both give and receive feedback under the guidance of Instructor
Trainers. For more details please contact Dave at
scotland.north.coach@...
Cheers!
Dave
