If you are an OWI+ and want to do more than just teach the diver training program (DTP) in your branch then get involved in teaching regional/area Skill development course!
This is a fun way to improve your skills and instructional ability if you are a new instructor but as an experienced instructor its a good way to broaden what you instruct, and keep the instructional fire alight!
All your expenses are covered instructing on regional SDCs and all the organising done for you, just turn up and share your knowledge and enthusiasm!
If you are interested please e-mail me and I can add you to our database so you can be asked when we are running courses.
To those who
already help, thanks for all your hard work!
Safe & happy diving, Sarah

For those wanting to do their Instructor Foundation Course (IFC) in Scotland, just to let you know we have one running 31st Oct/1st Nov south of Aberdeen in Portlethan - (50mins from Dundee) and still have room.
This is a really fun course to become an assistant diving instructor where you can help your branch with instructing.
Even if you do not want to instruct this course helps you develop your own diving skills which will help prgression to DL and AD, but its also a chance to meet new divers, hear about other dive sites and have a really fun Saturday evening.
We all need to work together to keep these courses running in Scotland, which the regional
and ITS teams means making arrangements and letting you know whats happening, we need you to book on to course as soon as you can, in this case, now, if we are to hold and end of year IFC in Scotland.
This document gives some idea of what an Assistant Diving Instructor might be
asked to teach, and possibly more importantly, what we won't be asked to do.

A HUGE thank you to all the instructors who made today's very successful training/diving day possible.
Instructors came from as far as Uist to help support our region, but a majority today were from Montrose who also allowed the use of their TOs RIB, they are a very kind and supportive branch, one of many who regularly give back to the region.
Well done to all the student divers and newer divers who make the effort to join us for training and to gain further dive experience and dive a new site. We had another few Ocean Divers and Sports Divers created today so congratulations to all who finished a qualification and keep up the hard work to those with a few more dives to pass.
Don't forget if you are now a Sport Diver you can enrol on th next IFC to take your first step into the world of instructing at http://northscotland.bsac.org/ITSPOE.asp
November we have a very special regional diving/coaching weekend (28/29th Nov) which Anne will announce in a few days that I hope many of you will be able to join us for a dive, stay the weekend and have a lot of fun getting to know all the other divers in our region.
For those who came thanks again for all your effort and enthusiasm, you will be pleased to know Masie is now asleep!
BSAC North Scotland Face Book should be getting some photos and maybe video from the dives at Catterline so take a moment to look.
Safe & happy diving, Sarah

Who do I owe boat money to?
Thanks for a great diving day everyone. Having arrived feeling a bit under the
weather, I wasn't sure if I'd manage a dive. But once people started coming back
with tales of seals biting fins and lobsters the length of your arm, it didn't
take long for my lassitude to lift.
My wife, Kim, went in snorkelling with bootneck and said she was going to "spend
some time feeding the fishes" (too much time on Mafia Wars I think.) Pollack
apparently love breadcrumbs - I did not know that.
When I finally got in, leading bootneck on a training dive, we had a great time
looking at squat lobsters, pink shrimps and a variety of crabs, anemones and
small fish. And we did the training as well.
Looking forward to November's training (I'm at the IFC next month), and then
maybe a session on Uist in the New Year?
Thanks to all the cox'ns, boathandlers, instructors and organisers, suppliers of
spare bits of equipment, insights into the mysteries of BSAC and advice on
buying torches, and those who only stood and waited.
Cheers
Hi folks,
As you are all probably aware, North Scotland is a large region with clubs on
the far flung isles as well as on the mainland (that's mainland, not Mainland
for you Orkadians & Shetlanders).
It is our task as regional coaching team to reach out to you all. It's great to
see Lee coming over to Regional Coaching events, but we also need to get out to
see you.
So, with the upcoming regional team meeting, we're looking for ideas. We don't
have much money to play with as we're still working on HQ to convince them how
BIG we are, and the costs involved.
I had an idea that the local clubs could apply to councils and national lottery
for sports club improvement grants. The National Lottery "Grants for All" is
for projects as well as equipment. A good case could be made for sports
development in the Highlands and Islands. I'll leave it in your hands to
investigate further, but please get back to us with any feedback you get from
your equiries. I admit that money might be tight at this time of recession and
London Olympics, but you can but try.
If you have any other suggestions, or for that matter anything else that you
wish raised at the regional team meeting, please don't hesitate to contact one
of us.
Best regards,
Guy

Hi folks,
Just a quicky to remind you of the Boat Handling SDC in the Aberdeen area
(probably Stonehaven) on the 24/ 25 October.
Please book on this course ASAP. As with all SDCs, bookings close a fortnight
before the event, but decisions on boats, instructors and even cancellation are
made 3 weeks in advance.
More later...
Before I have to make another purchase, I wondered if anyone had picked up an Uwatec depth timer at the regional dive training at Catterline last Sunday? It was bought new and is one of the newer designs with he brand name stamped on the plastic around the timer. It also has a silver buckle instead of the older black buckle. If anyone has found it can you please mail me back ASAP.
Also just wanted to say thanks again to all those who organised and lent their time to enable us (the trainees) to get a little further on in our training... it was a great day and much appreciated.
I know we've not yet organised the October
training, but Inverness SAC have a sports
training weekend planned for the 27-29th of November in Loch
Duich. They have booked accommodation at the Morvich Hostel in Kintail
which they will potentially fill, but there are lots of other accommodation
options around the area if anyone would like to join them. They will
also have Ribs and a compressor.
Inverness have also said that they would typically
do a communal meal at their hostel on the Saturday evening to which all
divers would be most welcome.
Re other accommodation, they have suggested
that Kintail house hotel have a bunk room that takes six and a couple of
chalet type rooms plus the usual hotel rooms.
So if you're interested in this weekend I
suggest we get names in quickly so we can arrange accommodation to suit.
Please pass onto branches that everyone in the region is welcome to attend:
Regional Meeting Friday 16th October 8.15pm Peterhead Room, Aberdeen Marriott Hotel (directions below) Free Parking Light buffet with tea and coffee (bar available at your own expenses)
Please try to be as punctual as possible as we have a lot to get through.
Please let me have any issues you would like
to raise, questions or comments asap for the agenda which will be
distributed before the meeting to the team and a printed copy will be available on the night.
We
will have Internet access (with data projector) so any web questions can also be addressed, we will accept input into the agenda from those unable to attend.
Please let me know in advance if you are intending to attend as we need to have an idea of numbers.
Best wishes, Sarah BSAC North Scotland Regional Coach 07764928656
Directions- The Aberdeen Marriott Hotel is 3 miles from the airport and 6 miles from the city centre. Follow the A96 Aberdeen - Inverness Road to Bucksburn Village, then turn right at the roundabout onto the A947
towards Banff and
Oldmeldrum-Dyce. After about 2 miles you will see the hotel at the second roundabout. The Aberdeen Marriott features 200 complimentary parking.
If you are a Dive Leader, taken the IFC your next step is your theory instructor exam (TIE) - next date is 31st Oct in Aberdeenshire (Portlethan, south of Stonehaven)
You give a 10min talk on a topic posted to you form HQ 2 weeks before the exam and sit a 1hour theory exam on theory up to an including Dive Leader knowledge.A very friendly bunch of examiners will be there to support you.
Just to let you know if you were thinking of taking the Theory Instructor Course in North Scotland, Portlethen, it has been moved from Saturday 31st Oct to Sunday 1st Nov by the Boss of the event.
This has been up dated on the north scotland website http://northscotland.bsac.org/ but probably not yet the main booking website of BSAC.com run by HQ.
This event is the last TIE in Scotand and will be running along side a well subscribed IFC.
Best wishes, Sarah

You hopefully will have seen my email
about the plans to do the November training at Loch Duich on the weekend
of 28th and 29th November. I've not had much response, but of course
you're always welcome and may want to leave the decision till nearer the
time. If you know you do want to go, and want me to find out about
accommodation for you, please let me know.
Re the October training, it will be
on either Saturday 24th or Sunday 25th October. Instructors and trainees
please let me know if you have a preference of which day. Where is
still to be decided but will keep you all posted.
Trainees and instructors names being
taken now please, and don't forget to tell me what training you want to
do.
For those with a TV this film has already had an effect while being screened at the cinema so I would urge you to watch it on TV and get as many other people to as well, after all the oceans are our playground and escape.
I've postponed the regional coaching
tomorrow due to continued heavy rain and the strong winds. Even the
quarry would be pretty rubbish.
If anyone is keen to do training next
weekend instead please let me know. I know some will be doing instructors
courses, but if there's anyone else out there...............?
Also I'd appreciate any willing instructors
getting in touch to let me know if they're free.
Thought its in South Scotland - Eyemouth and organised by ScotSAC there is a good list of speakers and BSAC/North Scotlands own, Paul Haynes, will be talk so worth popping along if you are in the area, we're all divers after all!
I have attended a few of these in the past. It will probably be quite an eye-opener for any BSAC attendees as SSAC's management structure and methodology can appear somewhat archaic and introvertive at times. Go along if you can make it and see what you make of it all. One of the things I find a little strange with SSAC is that their Sport Diver instructors CANNOT teach, or instruct anywhere else except in their own branch until they make the grade of Regional Instructor (a massive step within SSAC)... hmmm, thoughts on that? Interesting observations Darryl but I think we should applaud that a
Scottish Dive Conference is being held, with promise of good speakers
on Nov 14th .
Perhaps time to consider another joint BSAC/ScotSAC conference effort
as was previously occasionally done (helped by BSAC's 'Scotfed'). We
had a lively one in Inverness many years ago including both BSAC &
ScotSAC's national D.O.s.

As I have asked in the past, if anyone is willing to help organise a day or series of day talks, I
have a LOT of high quality, and some just famous but good to listen to
speakers, from the water relm, who have agreed to talk up here for no
fee, I just need people willing to help with the organising -
ANYONE?!
I am sure we could get cheap or maybe even free venues - happy
to have it anywhere in our region...
Let me know as the speakers
will forget their promises to me and I will have to do all the ground
work again. Spring talks in north scotland sound good and BSAC can
offer some finicial support if someone from the BSAC high ranks can
also come and speak to us which isn't too tough to sit through ;)
All I need is support. Look forward to hearing form you.

I am not sure what I can do to help Sarah out here, but I
have broadband and email so if you are looking for a pool of helpers I will put
my money where my mouth is. I would have loved to have got to the DO conference
but the distances for me and I am sure many in Scotland are a little off
putting. I would be nice if any Scotsac/ bsac had some of the elements of that in it.
Hi Sarah,
I'm happy to lend a hand with anything re organising, just let me know.

Please see attached leaflet and pass on to your branches:
BSAC are looking for 30 branch members from around the regions to be be given a Branch Volunteer of the Year award - each of the 30 winning volunteers will receive a Suunto D6 computer worth £525. There will also be an overall Branch Volunteer of the Year 2009 who will be awarded the Jonathan Crusher Trophy.
All nominations have to be submitted by 30th November
Our region has sent some of the fewest nominations off and I am sure that is not representative of the hard work members of your branch do for you, but it does mean whoever you nominate has an even better chance of being picked as North Scotlands Branch Volunteer of the Year. You can nominate more than one person from your branch.
This requires no expenses and very little time from you just fill in a short form and for more information go to www.bsac.com/volunteer 2009.
So go on do it now instead of checking e-mails!
Hope to see lots of you at the regional diving/training weekend end of this month, Sarah
I am a bit curious to find out what you mean by "SSAC's management structure and methodology can appear somewhat archaic and introvertive at times". A lot of our training is actually quite similar to what I have experienced in the past in continental CMAS and UK BSAC clubs. We have some differences, such as not having commercial "schools" and being purely branch-based. Our grades are quite similar and will be even more when we introduce a "branch diver" similar to your "ocean diver" (personally not too sure it is a forward step, though) and, as you pointed out, our instructing structure is a bit different. Our Branch Instructors can only teach within their branch but in practice they can help out if requested by a regional instructor/regional coach. On the other hand, all our instructors can teach to their own qualification level so a Master Diver BI (like your advanced diver) can teach to Master Diver level but only in their branch. In all, I think our similarities are bigger than our differences. However, all of this is of little consequence because the Dive Conferences, which took over the DO conferences a couple of years ago, are not about SSAC topics but topics of general interest to all divers ... and you are all very welcome!

Everyone now should have their copy of the Event 2010 program, (previously known as Program of Event [POE] but recently Council changed it to just Events...) either digital or if you chose for a paper copy of Dive you should have a paper copy of Events 2010.
It is also on BSAC.com and from Mon/Tues will be on the Regional website to book on to courseshttp://northscotland.bsac.org so please do book on and remember if you are keen, book on as
soon as you can, courses close 2-weeks before or we cancel them if it looks like there is no interest.
Some SDCs will be on the BSAC.com and in the Events 2010 but will not be on theregional website, this is because the regional website it the ONLY up to date place for you to check SDCs and local ITS events. BSAC Council have removed some of the SDCs so these will not be on the regional website as they will not be running, they will eventually return 'improved' (or at least different!). Dates, prices and locations of SDC are subject to change so do check the regional website and not just the Events 2010 program. Change only occurs to ensure a course will run so please try not to complain to the SDC boss too much.
Ice diving is on 3 times in 2010 and I will need an idea of numbers much earlier as the dates are liable to move as I will only run this courses if there is ice, other regions do run without ice if you have a problem with
this, I am happy to put you in contact. I am also running ice experience weekends for those already qualified - let me know if you are interested and watch this space!
Sport Mixed Gas is also included so if you like to dive 30m+ and want to remember and be more aware on the dive then DO consider this course - I do hate reading incident reports ;) Trimix is not as scary or technical as it may sound (if I can do it you can!) - we also have trimix tri-dives (try-dives) on request for those who want to know more but not commit.
Our ITS (instructor training scheme events) are moving around the region as much as possible but we are restricted to places we can get free pool/rooms etc or if not free very cheap (sorry economically effective), the usual 2x IFCs, and OWIC/PIE weekends are included but also this year a separate OWIC and a separate PIE to allow those that want to progress more quickly to go for the exam soon after the course. Sorry if
there is nothing in your area when you want it but living in a big region we all have to be willing to travel. If you can find me free rooms and pools then I will happily put an event in your area for 2011 or if you can also get 8 or more divers then we can hold an unscheduled event.
If you want any thing else run or your branch to have a course run by the region but just for your branch then do e-mail me it can be easily arranged.
