Ciao Huw, we chatted few time ago when I told you
that I saw you racing your JPS at the 2000 Manx and
the 2001 Ulster. After that finally I took delivery
of my JPS, one of the ex S.Spray no.20 bikes, from
the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham where it
was residing from when Norton ceased their racing
activity. You can see the photos of the actual moment when
I retire the bike from the museum on the site
jpsnorton.com on the "gallery" section at bottom of the page. I
hope to bring the ex-works JPS at the TT "Lap of
honour"in 2002!
Thanks, and keep on' racing with your
JPS!

Mauro Borella
mbracing61@...

I started working for an international agency
that could pay me during the day and volunteered
nights and weekends for those who couldn't pay like
Amnesty, Oxfam, etc.. I found my niche in writing,
educating and raising awareness and money. I became
involved on the political side as well writing position
papers and speecches that were delivered in your House
of Commons as well as the Canadian one and the US
Senate and Nato council of ministers. I gave seminars on
such sexy topics as the role of multilateral treaty
organizations. As you know in that environment all you have is your
reputation and integrity. So when someone challenges my
integrity and accuracy it stings.

The next big
change was when my mother was very gravely ill. Ileft my
job and lovely apartment and moved home. She
recovered and I finished giving a college history course
for her. I got involved in trying to save a very
historic house from demolition - that was front page news
all across Canada for several weeks - quite a story
in itself.

my mother and I wrote Collecting
Canada's Past, Prentice- Hall 1974. It was a best seller
and became required reading at the School of Canadian
Studies at Harvard University. Then I met Joseph who was
both a real estate developer and a scientist. We
married in 75. He was very sensitive about Mike so I felt
I had to close that door by not even trying to
following motor sports of any kind. But I did manage to
send Mike several cards every year ( naughty me).

When Joseph died 5 years ago I mourned him and also
Mike whom I had never been able to mourn.
For
Christmas a couple of years ago one of my brothers who had
done a high school project on Mike gave me Christopher
Hilton's book, A Man Called Mike. I loved it. I called him
and asked him if he had left out the prediction o f
Mike's death for a reason. I was sure he would have
heard of it, but he hadn't.

Being a good
journalist as well as an author he asked me a lot of
questions to prove my authenticity. I gave him information
that I left out of my story (on purpose). He accepted
me and and asked me to start writing things down and
sending them to him for inclusion in a future edition.
That was the genesis of my writing down my story.
Since then I have been on a personal quest to try to
learn who the other 7 young men were. I am pretty sure
one was Gary Hocking based on Mike's comments that
one, a very good friend, tried to beat it ( the
prediction) by switching over to car racing and was killed
shortly afterwards.

Like Rip Van Winkle waking
from a 25 year nap I awoke to a world without the
motorcycle GPs as they had been. It is a different world. I
f the 60's with their numerous top rank stars,
factory teams competing in every class, full GP calendar
plus fantastic races every weekend weren't the golden
era, then what was?

So now you know that when
I met Mike I knew more about F1cars than bikes - we
had some great conversations about both , plus some
about circuits and suspensions - very much an issue
with the 500 -4.
I f you are ever interested I will
tell you some more about Mike and F1 and why I advised
him against going back to it.
I always enjoy our
chats,

Elizabeth

When I was about 12-13 ( 1960) I decided I wanted
to be a mechanical engineer. I was fascinated by the
ways things worked and why. At some point I fell in
love with cars and racing - particularly Formula One
racing. There was a time when I could have drawn maps of
the great GP circuits. I was engrossed in the details
of circuit design. My thinking progressed to F1
suspensions, tires, circuit pavements and safety design -
barriers, restraints etc.. I went to marshals school at
Mosport, nearly fainted during the first aid film and so
they put me on signaling, communication and
timekeeping. I worked at several races and also participated
in car rallies as a navigator.

During high
school I was allowed to attend engineering classes at
the University of Toronto. At 15 I was the youngest
and the first female student member of the Society of
Automotive Engineers. My best male friend raced motorcycles
and so I went to races with him. I was well on my way
to a career in engineering. Who knows I might have
been a F1 team manager! LOL!

Then at 18 I had
the car accident that changed my life. I died,
briefly and was revived ( well, I guess that is obvious
LOL). everything changed for me. I knew then that I had
to devote my life to humanitarian projects - a major
career change. I threw myself into that with my
customary enthusiasm. But it didn't pay very well.

BMF, best male friend, Derek was by now a Honda,
Ducati and BSA dealer. One of the our top local racers,
Al Johnson, wanted to retire and sell his Yamaha,
Triumph, Norton dealership. Contracts prevented Derek from
owning both so he asked me if I would like to run it for
the extra income. So for two years I was a yamaha,
Triumph and Norton dealer! I had a racing a motocross
team and belonged to the same club as Mike Duff ( as
he was then).

Naturally I went to all the
races that my teams were in. But I didn't follow the
European racing scene - it was so far away and I was
juggling two careers and family commitments.

By
1967 I had to resign from the day to day operation of
the dealership but stayed on as nominal owner. You
can bet I took a lot of teasing from Mike when I
finally 'fessed up and showed him my business card - he
accused me of being a secret agent for Phil Read -
jokingly of course.

One of the last things that I
did related to motorcyle competition was that I had a
very small role in organizing the Canadian national
motocross team that competed against the US in a challenge
match in '67( and won). By the end of the summer I had
nothing more to do with racing of any kind.

It
was Derek who took me to the reception where I met
Mike . and It was Derek who made me read all the
magazine articles about the factory teams before we went.
My negative pre-impression of Mike was a combination
of what I read and what I picked up from some of the
local racers who were frankly green with envy over the
the factory teams and eager to spread anything
negative.

I am really writing to enquire whether you
currently
make any use of, or indeed have heard of,
Deep Cryogenic Treatment(DCT)
as an aid to
performance and reliability for competition applications.
DCT is not well known in the UK, but essentially, it
is a thermal
treatment for metals that greatly
improves their operational life and
performance, and
can be applied to anything from a pair of brake discs
to a
whole engine and gearbox. The results are
very interesting. Brake
discs last some 2-300%
longer in competition conditions, engines produce
5-10% more power, whilst wearing less and being
substantially more
reliable. The process has been around in
the States for 18 years or more
and is
extensively used by 7 out of the top ten NASCAR teams for
example. Try looking up “Cryogenic Treatment“ on the Web
and you will find
dozens of firms in the States
offering this process. Or follow this link
to just one
firm www.300below.com to see the claims being made. We
have been working in this country in a small way for
the last 4 years or
so, and have many satisfied
racing clients including some Formula 1
teams and
top level international rally teams. Our experience
fully
substantiates the claims being made by the
American firms, and I think the
main benefit in your
particular field would be in essence to reduce the
costs
of racing, because valuable and difficult to source
parts can be
made to last longer and break less. If
you would like further
information, please e-mail
your contact address and I will send a small pack
of information for your consideration.

The Ulster GP 2001
I have never ridden at the
Dundrod circuit it has always clashed with
something.
When I arrived on Thursday afternoon I didn’t relay
know what to expect from the event.
After setting
up camp I went out for a few laps on a road bike,
the Video that I had been studying for the past few
weeks did not relay do justice to the speed and circuit
knowledge required to ride round this track at 100%.
Only 5 laps of practice didn't allow me enough time to
get going. This circuit has a lot of blind corners,
which can be taken flat out if you know where you are
going.
After some debate I was allowed to start at
the back of the grid.
My race started and was red
flagged before I got off the line (5 riders down just
round the 2nd corner only minor injuries). After the
restart I had a good race finished up not last by not
much!
I think I enjoyed myself it was an
experience I will never forget that's for sure.
Andy
Wilson had just finished his F1, he rode the bike for
the first time in practice, and it had a few teething
problems and consequently failed to qualify for the race.
A shame because I was looking forward to a race
with him. It's only a mater of time before I will have
some real competition out there IM sure!

the south and a real chance to get some speed

went up a slip road a few times (the breaking markers
were definitely too late for me) definitely Norton

Earny Coatis (£50) I didn’t put them in. There was no
practice time to bead them in.
Out in the First race of

had some ace racing with riders I trust! All well
till I go up the slip road (my F1 cant stop as well as

Ireland 1966 to his last in Estonia 2000.
Just over
60,000 people came to his tragic funeral, in a small
town in Ballymoney in the James Duff church. He was
missed by the whole world. Ireland and Great Britain

back row, with 2 waves going off in front those 10
second intervals feel longer then off we go I had a
fairly good race with a guy on a GSXR 750 till he pulled
in with" handling difficulties "then a clear run to
the flag, eccept when the leaders came past which
gives me the best seat in the house to watch the race
for a bit.
I'm constantly being told no one
cares where I finish just so long as it keeps going
round, because they all listen for the noise. A real
surprise to find that my picture was on the front of the
program,it made one of my sponsors (Dara Brady) very happy,
He had just bought a stack of programs without
looking at them and got the shock of his life to see his
name there.
The presentation in theYacht was kept
short ( so club could join in the celebration ) I can
just about remember getting a lift back .I had no
trouble sleeping in a tent that night!
