I reckon the Landranger will be around for at least another 7 years
before any `new' 1:50000 or equivalent series becomes a reality.
In my opinion, Ordnance Survey will take a cue from the (planned)
Digital TV switchover in 2012 and consider it a good time to launch a
new map series, if it deems one will be necessary.
Alternatively by then we may only have entirely digital 'map
cartridges' for PDAs etc.!
The Landranger mapping, though superficially 30 years old in style,
has adapted admirably and still stands up well in the modern market.
Let's not forget - Explorers are using mapping from the 60s and 70s
in some areas of the country - Times Roman lettering and all!
