Hi missmogga , no i haven't had exhibitions of this
kind of work because the places i have exhibited
before, like more 'Traditional work' you know,
landscapes in watercolour and such like, which is ok
but i prefer something a little more challenging, i
think with that kind of painting, it doesn't keep you
attention for long, i like work where you dont quite
no what your looking at so it holds you attention for
long, the doll like images have i kind of ghost like
quality don't you think? I need to look for more
understanding exhibition possibilities, i really upset
an elderly gent at an exhibition of some abstract
paintings, it was a small town and this kind of work
had not been exhibited there before, and he was
chairman of their watercolour society, he took one
look at my work, and stormed out of the room swearing
under his breath and modern crap, but if he had took
the time to talk to me he would have found out that my
background had been in more traditional ways of
working, and besides abstract art is not modern at all
its quite old, when you consider the conceptual stuff
you see in galleries, don't you agree? .

Hi sean

Yes he knows, he's is a bit of an exhibitionist! he's
modeled for my life drawings and been model for nude
photography projects for other people at collage, i
don't know were he gets the balls from! (pardon the
pun!), I'm way to much self conscious to do that,
wouldn't want to everyone my fat bits, but i have
always wanted to model for one life class just to say
i have done it, maybe i will some day!

Hello Mikey, welcome to the group!
Thanks for putting up the artwork too; The digital
imaging stuff with
your boyfriends photo is mad, especially the one where
you made him
into that long spiny creature (does he know you did
that to him?)!
The drag queen one is very colourful, nice
blendy-light stuff.

I really liked the effect you got from spraying around
the
dolls...looks great. I liked the collage sketchbook
stuff too and the
message...you should chat with Missmogga, she does a
lot of similar
paint/word/magazine collage stuff too.

Thanks for your comments, and i agree with what you
say about freeing
art from the critics...Critics are just frustrated and
blocked atists
anyway.

Enjoy the group!

Been trying to come up with a list from here, but of course I am
drawing a blank. I will have to use gurner with my friends kids, as I
get them into face competitions. I actually have heard two, three
really, of these expressions used here.

> Shitehawk - A king/queen of bullshitters
"Shite" is recent, thanks to _Backbeat_ the film about Stuart
Sutcliffe and later on _Trainspotting_. Shitehawk I have heard with
people looking to impress, but the meaning was a bit different.

> "Way aye man!" - another geordie saying for 'why, yes of course'.
Heard this in Port Coquitlam growing up, but no longer.

> "You're not half as green as you are cabbage looking" - another
> Northern phrase meaning you're not as stupid as you look.

Only ever heard this once a decade ago out of the mouth of a VERY old
farmer from Saskatchewan. Yes, he was addressing me.

I do like your work, particularly "Dolls". I do disagree with you on
the critic. There is a place for them. Sometimes those that don't
really are the people who can, if you follow my meaning. I think that
by the mid twentieth cent. the critics place was overstated and
overblown, but that that fact does not invalidate the role of
critics. Sometimes an artist needs to listen to another voice other
than the voices of one's own self or peers.

There's always going to be strong reactions to art; especially the
less traditional it is. Some will embrace it, others will not like it
because it does not fit their idea of what art should be.
As an atist myself i'm learning not to take it personally anymore if
someone doesn't like my work, even if it sometimes frustrates me if
i've put a lot of work in to it. I'm biased myself, there's certain
art i can't stand like painting a huge canvas grey and leaving it
like that or the last turner prize with the lightswitch going on and
off.

I think there is always a place for constructive criticism, and that
can come from anyone at all. What i don't like is appointed critics
who are giving this kind of power to be 'experts' on art and what is
good and what isn't...i find this quite exclusive. especially when
often the critics are descriminatory and biased to what they like.

What i certainly don't like is the contemporary trend for
critical 'assassins'; the ones who totally rip apart a persons a work
in an insulting and personal manner. Having done a zine, i realise it
takes a lot less time and thought to write a scathing self-
opinionated article that attacks something than it is to say "well i
don't like this personally, but let's look at it's strengths and
merits".
A lot of people follow certain critics because of their strong points
of view and they start acting like they are the authority on
subjects, this is something i don't like either as it adds to a herd/
faddish mentality quite often.

I've found that a few certain established punk zines are terrible for
these sort of scathing "This is crap cos i said so" mentality, that
destoy people's worrk and don;'t give hardly any info as to why they
say it's shit. A lot of critics have big egos and want everyone to
think like they do i feel.
But i agree there are a lots of responsible and intelligent critics
who will spend time giving constructive criticism, weighing up the
pros and cons of a work...these individuals i think are useful to
artists.

As part of the REAL BRIGHTON FRINGE FESTIVAL, Arts trail organiser
PAULA SIGLEY currently has an exhibition at THE SIDEWINDER, KEMP TOWN.

the end of the FRINGE @ the Sidewinder pub.

An auction of paintings and sculpture by PAULA SIGLEY and other
BRIGHTON FRINGE artists.
Live Music from dynamic Brighton based SCRAP RECORDS.
And all round end of FRINGE celebrations.

This event will be open to every one.
About Paula Sigley:
Paula has no formal arts training yet in recent years has made her
own unique mark in the art world.
With her moving portraits, provocative sculptures and risqué film
productions Paula has forged her own unforgettable niche in the
consciousness of countless art critics, media organisations and the
public at large.
Be it City galleries, collaborations with legendary punk bands or
headline grabbing squatted exhibitions Paula is consistently courting
controversy and respect.
She has appeared on CNN, ITV network and countless newspaper and on-
line features.
She has refused offers in excess of £5000 for some pieces of art that
are simply not for sale.
This year the Brighton Fringe Festival invited Paula to co-ordinate
its long running arts trail.
The SideWinder exhibition is part of the art trail and a chance for
the people of her adopted home city to view her work in an
atmospheric yet intimate setting.
Plans for the remainder of this year include new film projects, more
live show collaborations and a Trans European tour.

i guess the fact that you use objects or a brush at all is considered
old style by many but i don't want to make the move into
investigations of empty space and that sort of nonart art, i think
its good to put on group exhibitiona wheresimilar people support each
other as i have been isolated and that has not helped also it lleads
to more art /collaborative possibilities, it depends on the mentality
of the place and the people of course nothing should stop an artist,
however it is disheartening to be rejected consistently in favour
bourgeious or trendy artists-or an elite.

Hello. I came across this list and wondered if anyone was interested
in a new journal I'm working on. We're based in Liverpool and are
putting together what we're calling an "underground arts magazine"
which basically has a few articles about the Arts in the North West
but is also looking for short fiction and some poetry from writers
looking to get published, not just from Liverpool but wherever. It's
kind of our way to jump start some real literary presence in the face
of a lot of the publishers who are becoming more and more asinine it
seems.

Anyway, check out our site if you're interested:

www.cubanheel.co.uk

The submission guidelines are on there. All we ask is that work has a
bit of passion about it.

This is a foul move and one which shows a 'borg' type mentality by
thr Brighton Festival..to assimilate and wipe out other people's
creative efforts.
The Brighton Fringe has always supported local artists and creative
people and has always encouraged more challenging and original
content reflecting the interests of many outside of the trendier arts
scenes.
Now Brighton Festival want to use that to takeover even more of the
May festival time.
Well i say they should cut their fringe and let the real one grow.

iso i sent some pictures of my work by email that i thought this guy
looking for YOGA artists would like
but got this in reply
"Hi Mogz

Please do not send 2MB attachments with emails. I have just spent 30
minutes trying to get rid of your message so that I could get my
email program to work again.

I don't think that your style is suitable to us, and you do not need
to tell me about unethical use of artwork.

Thank you for your interest.
Gordon"

BRIGHTON FRINGE AFFORDABLE ARTS FAIR & END OF FESTIVAL PARTY.

The SideWinder

Brighton

The Brighton Fringe will be holding an affordable art fair & end of
festival party at The SideWinder in Kemp Town this bank holiday
Monday.
The event will be an unmissable opportunity for city art lovers to
purchase works by Fringe artists.
The Arts Fair has been organised by Brighton based Artist Paula
Sigley. (See notes)
Music will be provided by Brighton label SCRAP records.

Bank Holiday Monday 26th May 2003.
The SideWinder
Kemp Town
Brighton

Notes for Journalists:
(1) Paula Sigley.

Paula has no formal arts training yet in recent years has made her
own unique mark in the art world.
With her moving portraits, provocative sculptures and risqué film
productions Paula has forged her own unforgettable niche in the
consciousness of countless art critics, media organisations and the
public at large.
Be it City galleries, collaborations with legendary punk bands or
headline grabbing squatted exhibitions Paula is consistently courting
controversy and respect.
She has appeared on CNN, ITV network and countless newspaper and on-
line features.
She has refused offers in excess of £5000 for her pieces of art that
are simply not for sale.
This year the Brighton Fringe Festival invited Paula to co-ordinate
its long running arts trail.
The Arts Fair celebrates the art trail and is a chance for the people
of her adopted home city to view her work in an atmospheric yet
intimate setting.

Paula Sigley is available for commission, exhibitions and art co-
ordination through her Fishy Eye Art Studio.

Frightening that the spam I receive at my one account (my clubs
account) is getting VERY particular. I received several about
learning languages (a key interest), one in Finnish about coffee (it
had a picture of beans and a espresso maker - I am addicted to coffe
and want to learn Finnish at some point), and a couple in French
about employment (I think).
Tonnes of shows in Vancouver that I want to see in the next month.
This weekend it is The Flaming Lips with Modest Mouse (big fan,
excellent band) and Liz Phair. (huge crush!) Destroyer, a local band,
is also on the bill which is disappointing. The singer is tight with
the snotty scenster crowd and kind of a hypocrite in my opinion. Then
it is Yo La Tengo, do make say think (great Toronto band on the same
label as godspeed you black emperor, and Fly Pan Am), ...And You Will
Know Us by the Trail of Dead followed by Blonde Redhead the very next
day - which is my birthday. Blur is also playing and I think someone
bought me a ticket for that.
If you get a chance to see any of Aki Kaurismaki's films
(like "Drifting Clouds" or "The Man Without a Past") do so. Jim
Jarmusch is a big fan and the two have some similarities. Great
deadpan humour, very subdued, very Finnish. Also, on a Scandinavian
track, Erik Skjoldbaerg's "Insomnia" is still a high recomendation on
my list as is Hans Petter Moland's "Zero degrees Kelvin".

Went the big Plaza of Nations show today (big, sort of open air, kind
of cavernous sounding place just outside the downtown core of
Vancouver)

Liz Phair: Incredible eye candy, disappointing set that drew
on "Exile..." rather heavily - wanted to here new stuff. I would like
to see her with a band, she needs one to make her set more dynamic

Modest Mouse: Great band, okay set. Take way to long between songs
and Isaac Brock is unintelligible when speaking for the most part.
Like Liz, they need to be seen in a different context.

The Flaming Lips: WOW!!!!!!!!!!! Who needs drugs ('e' specifically)
when you have the F.Lips? I came away from their show feeling
incredibly light, genuinely happy and full of good will. While I
don't do any drugs myself, I want to make drug-oriented music that
makes people happy. 14 fans dressed up in plush animal costumes
dancing along, video clips, (Cool Hand Luke, Time Bandits, random
footage, and the Tele-tubbies) GIANT balloons, confetti and the
singing nun puppet. A show that feels as though it may be changing my
life.

the spam i am getting is really offensive, involving animals
the latest one titled

cum covered bitches getf*** by farm animals
i am therefore closing this account
i think someone has a real grudge against me as i keep blocking it
and the titles get worse every time
i do think there is something wrong with peopl who think like
that/promote that kind of nastiness

onto better things yes Liz Phair is excellent, i havn't heard her
stuff in a while---

In a local interview she stated that her new album is big budget
sound, but that she is basically back to the "Exile in Guyville" Liz
Phair attitude as opposed to the "Whitechocolatespaceegg" Liz Phair.
(Unlike so many others I kinda liked "WCSE")

The F.Lips though... still quite blown over by the F.Lips.
