The Hopkins 4K for Cancer   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #1107 of 2355 |

Dear fellow cyclists,

My name is Weijie Zhang and I am a student at St. Catherine's College,
Oxford. I am writing about this venture that I'm undertaking in the
summer of 2005, the Hopkins 4K for Cancer. This summer, the
Hopkins 4K for Cancer will embark upon its fourth annual trek across
the US from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific. Beginning this May, 27
university students will ride their bicycles for 4000 miles, from the
Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD to San Francisco, CA. Our
mission is to unite communities across the States in the fight against
cancer by spreading awareness, raising funds and fostering hope.
When we reach our final destination of the Golden Gate Bridge, we
hope to donate our goal of $60,000 to the American Cancer Society¡¦s
Hope Lodge.

Each morning we will wake up early and bike 70 to 110 miles through
America¡¦s landscape, sharing our passion for our cause with everyone
we meet. The trek will be a physical, mental, and spiritual battle, but it
is one that I am excited to undertake. On the road we will dedicate
much of our time to community service events, such as helping with
the Relay for Life in Cleveland, Ohio and visiting cancer patients at the
Midland Hospice in Topeka, Kansas. In past years we have been
astonished at the number of incredible people we have met during
these meaningful projects. We often find ourselves feeding off their
strength in order to climb over the next set of mountains in front of us.
Our nightly stops in churches and community centers also provide
great opportunities for us to share our experiences with our gracious
hosts. I hope that by sharing our enthusiasm throughout the journey,
we will impress our passion for service upon others.

Even though I have done this trip in 2003, I am returning again as a trip
leader, because this is a ride of inspiration and hope for all of us, who
have been affected by cancer in one way or another. If you would like
me to ride and pray for a particular person whom you know is affected
by cancer, please feel free to write to me. It is stories like these that
make our ride a meaningful one. If you would like to make a
contribution to the Hopkins 4K in our fight against cancer, please send
your checks to:

As we are currently only able to accept donations in American dollars,
please make your checks payable to "Weijie Zhang." I will make the
necessary conversions on my part and issue you an official receipt. I
also encourage you to visit our website at http://www.hopkins4k.org to
learn more about our cause and my fellow riders. (If you check out the
archives from 2003, you will see some photos of me on the trip!)

Our success for this trip depends on the generosity of people like you,
and anything you can contribute will be very much appreciated. If you
are feel you have something to contribute but are not sure, please
contact me. Please feel free to forward this message to your friends.
Thank you.
