Re: [oxford-cycling] Re: FW: 2005 Time Trial Calendar

The CTT website is probably still wrong . I have not yet seen the London West
Yearbook but as they did not send me the proof copy as promised I am not too
hopeful that this will be correct either. I attach the correct details, as
amended last September. We tried out my first revision at the end of last
August but the first bit up B3017 was a bit slow. The new start point is now
north of the power lines and just before the bend before Bradley Farm Cottages.
The road is slightly downhill the slightly up past the new H25/17 start at the
north side of the entrance to the Bradley Farm drive. This should enable the
riders to pick up speed before easing for the left-hand turn onto the slip road
to A420.

The finish has been moved a bit east of the Greyhound pub past the new 25
finish layby to a point 102 yards beyond where the Bessels Leigh hill begins to
bite but thus uses all the speed to be gained by the slight dip past the
Greyhound. This also enables the course to be slightly shorter than before
when i had had to make it a bit long to clear the road to Bessels Leigh village.
The snag is that a car-bound timekeeper in the lay-by will have to time riders
as they pass the finish board 102 yards ahead. But timekeepers like the
admirable Mick and Marion Fountain couple can probably sit on a chair under
the trees on the footpath. The clearway regulations prohibit parking a car on
the footpath there.

The regulations about having only the timekeeper's car at the start are common
to all London West DC courses but are especially important on this course
because the B4017 is quite narrow there. When we ran the Oxford clubs event on
August Saturday and started at the paired field gates just south of the power
lines crossing somebody parked opposte the start and forced cars too close to
the starting riders. The new start is simillarly at the left-hand of a pair of
field gates so it is vital that nobody is allowed to park a car at the opposite
gareway. Traffic coming up from the south has a clear view for a long way
before the start. Oncoming traffic from the north has not because of a slight
bend. The actual start point has been chosen so that it will be just in front
of the timekeeper's car. A warning sign well before and another on the back of
that car should give some protection. The car itself should not cause an
obstruction but should alert car drivers to the presence of
the riders.

I hope that this new course will be about 30 seconds faster for an average rider
than the pre-2004 version which started slightly uphill but closer to the
slip-road and finshed at the top of Bessels Leigh hill. I should have marked
the start and finish before your event as there is an Oxford clubs ten on it on
Saturday 26 March at 16.01, the first use of it in its revised form. I hope to
ride that and your event too. Best wishes, Chris Hart

Dear Chris,
I am in the process of filling out the event form for the OUCC 10 at the end of
April, which will use the Cumnor 10. Could you please send over a revised
course description? I have one from the CTT website but I am not sure whether
it is the updated description.

Regards,
Eli Lassman

will be using for 2 events in July and August next season. It starts just
north of Junction 10 of the M40 at Tusmore Park on the old A43, goes south on
the new A43 to Baynads Green roundabout turns to go up via Barley Mow
roundabout to the Evenley roundabout, turns back to barley Mow then left on
the A421 to Finmere roundabout, turns back to Barley Mow, down to Baynards
Green, around that again, up to Evenley, back to Barley Mow but straight on
along A43 this time to turn off onto the old A43 and Finish out side the
entance to Tusmore Park. The HQ for open events will be at Souldern village
hall. The similar N15/25B starts and finishes on the A421 and will be used
for the A5 Rangers event on 30 May. Both courses should be very fast unless it
is windy. There is also a 50, similar to the N15/25C but nobody is promoting
an event on it next season. it is a 3-lap course and should be faster than

> the now-banned courses on the A34. We still have the fast HCC 235 at Weston-
on-the Green on that road and the HCC 246 on the Witney by-pass for Oxford club
events.

> You may also find the revised H10/17, Cumnor-Kingston Bagpuize ten, quite
fast. I have eliminated the Bessels Leigh hill and further tweaked it since
we used it at the end of August. H25/17 is also a bit better than it was. Our
open events will use these 2 courses and the H50/17 for the 50.

Road works prevented its use after one event in 2004. The U46A which Corinium
CC use on the A419 near Cirencester should be better next year when it is
reduced to the correct length. Anything on the A419 should be fast. The P613
ten near Thruxton on the A303 is fast and very popular. The various ten, 25,
50 and 100 courses on the A3 Portsmouth Road, the P881 and P885, are well
worth the trip and better than the 10/1, 25/1 and 50/1 and courses on the
Bath Road, A4, west of Reading. The courses on the A31 near Farnham are
mixed, the H10/8 is quite good, as is the H25/8. The 30 and 50 are slower
and the H100/8 is hard but might suit a good hillclimber like you if you wish
to ride the National Championship. On the whole the F1 courses on the A1 seem
a better.bet than those on A31. H25/2 is now no good as it has lost its ski
slope. For that you would have to go all the way to West Wales to ride
