I am informed that there were some very strange entries in a log
book that was kept. According to Vincent Gaddis in his book
Invisible Horizons, there was a reference to a violent storm on a
day that only heavy seas were reported in Lewis, which is not that
far away.
The log also had accounts of very odd behavior on the part of all of
the remaining lighthouse keepers, crying, praying, and then at the
end, there was calm and the last entry in the log was "God is over
all."
One other possible item of interest may be the story of St. Flannan,
after whom the isles are named. This gentleman was a bishop who was
much loved by his people, and he decided to end his his days on the
largest of the Seven Hunters, Eilean Mor. He built a small stone
chapel, and spent his last days there in solitude, his followers
periodically bringing him food.
The chapel was in ruins, but was still there when the British
government decided to build a lighthouse. Joseph Moore, the
survivor of the group said that the old chapel made the men feel
strange, but peaceful. "closer to God."
All of the above is taken from Gaddis' book, and I have not seen
this in any other source. He sources an article from a 1929
magazine.
BTW, the chapel is still there in photographs I have seeen on the
internet. Since 1971 the lighthouse has been automated.
